Shrouded in a black veil of darkness, a forest stands quietly. Leaves slowly wind their way down to earth here and there, making no noise as they reach their target. Nothing stirs for a long moment before a faint splashing of water can be heard, coming from a small creek picking it's way through the trees. No animals can be seen. Or birds. Or anything.
But something starts to form out of the shadows. It's dark pelt blends in perfectly. A star pendant hangs from the equine's neck, but no other ornaments can be seen. The mare's legs and rump bear strange markings, and a sense of dispair seems to radiate from her.
Realizing that the mare is looking at you (you couldn't see her eyes under her mane), you quickly avert your eyes. Instead of doing the same, though, the mare takes a silent step towards you.
What do you want? she says, her voice cold yet smooth. You cringe. "N-nothing, nothing at all," you reply.
The mare gives a slight smirk, then becons to you.
Come, she says. If you're lost, which there's no doubt you are, you might as well know more about the person you just stumbled upon.
I am a shade, she continues. If you don't know what that is, you surely have very poor knowledge of magic and the sort. But let's say you don't know what a shade is. A shade is a person who has been taken over by an evil spirit. Somewhat possesed, if you please. She gives a cold grin, pausing for a minute to let the information set in.
Scared yet? You should be.

Me? I'm just a spirit that's taken over a person's body. But I bet that person could tell you more!

Suddenly, the despair that you felt radiating from the mare lessens, and the mare flicks her forelock out of her eyes. Slowly but surely, red stockings replace the markings on her legs, and her coat lightens. The new mare looks almost small and scared. She stares into the distance for a couple of seconds before turning to you:

My name is Eleniel. I-I made the stupid mistake of messing with spirits. Now I am controlled by one. But I'll back up a bit.
My family was a somewhat normal one. I had a brother, a mother and a father. One day, my father dissapeared. Because of this, my mother slowly went insane while taking care of my brother and me. With no one else to turn to, I clung to my brother. He pushed me away, too. I wandered, wondering what to do with my powers that I had. I could do a little magic, but I found I could controll spirits. It was a disasterous desicision, because I was so weak. I accidentally found an evil one, and it was too strong for me.

Eleniel lowers her head, and slowly the despair comes back, her coat darkens, and her markings re-appear. The only thing that doesn't change, you notice, is her star pendant. The sage grins.

Foe! The stupid stud out-smarted me and tricked me! He will pay for it! I'll kill him! And I'll use Eleniel to help me do it...
Friend! Well, kindof. He's the first person I've met since I became a shade, and it actually seemed like he wanted to help me. He does all he can to harm Sigil, but it affects me, too. I do all I can to protect him, but at a steep price...
