THE STORY
Reaching out towards the setting sun I could see her image, the soft curve of her body and the small grayish hued ears that would cast a delicate shadow on the ground, while in the distance he stood. He always looked different, sometimes he was thin other times fat, yet always I could never seen his face. He was cloud in shadow and dressed in clothes unknown to me. Then, as I would run out and try to reach for her hand the mists would surround them both leaving me again alone.
Waking up in a panic my heart beat against my chest as I whipped the perspiration that had gathered on my face and neck. Rolling over I tried to fall back asleep but it was a hopeless attempt. I had never met my mother. I had never felt her warm embrace as she rocked me to sleep as a baby calf. No, all I had were these fleeting nightmares of running after her and then seeing her vanish in a puff of smoke.
Ripping the covers off my body I reached for my spear, but my hand did not obey me and grazed the small glass collar that had found a home on my bed side table. My movements stopped as if praying it would not fall, but it was all in vain. I watched as the round crystal collar fell to the ground and broke into two pieces. At that moment I could recall the way it had draped around her neck and how it had hung there loosely. Her soft light blue eyes would look up at me with confusion and annoyance, yet they always had the appearance of someone that had just cried. Wet, damp, and hurting.
Reaching down I picked up the two glass pieces and placed them gently back on the table. Turning on my oil lamp I watched as the light played tricks with the collar creating a faint rainbow on the wall. Finally, I picked up my shaping rock and reached for my spear as I began to scrap the blade of the spear. Shaking my head back and forth with each sound I tried to scrap away the imaginary memories I had come up with as a child of my mother and of her.
In the room next door my father was snoring loudly. He never dreamed of mother, he knew what her face looked like, and he knew he never wanted to see her again. The gossip that had flowed around the encampment of our clan was ear splitting. "She ran off. She left him and there new born son. That good for nothing left her husband and family for a Sixtent."
At that time I did not know what any of this meant. I was a young boy playing amongst the skulls of our enemies and tossing spears at the other young calf boys, but the adults never looked at me the same way. The elders would snort in disgust when I would walk by with my father, who as hard head as he was would just puff up his chest and try to ignore their comments. But I knew different, he looked strong and powerful but at nights when the cool moon hung in the air I could hear his voice crack as small tears would roll down his face. Yet, if I shed one tear he would beat me, and if I shouted back he would just push me aside like I was nothing to him. Nothing more than a memory of what his life should have been, and of her.
Yet, through all of this he was still my father and he was bent on me becoming something, something that would wash away the memory of our cursed past. I hated my mother, I hated everything about her. Because she abandoned me, my father pushed me harder than any of the other boys. The six mile runs through the forest at 2 AM and the constant critiques of my skills in battle. Our clan was brutal and relentless when it came to the destruction of our enemies, and since my father was the head general, under the Ruler, it was my duty to follow in his footsteps.
I can recall the day of my Armory and the hard knit brow of my father as he ripped me from my bed to prepare me for the event. His rough hands pulling on my arms and legs as I tried to get one more wink of sleep. The smell of the grease from the meat that was being prepared by the woman outside and the shouts and yells of other boys preparing for the day. "Deshako I better not catch you sleeping in that bed, get your clothes on and hurry up. If you are late you will shame this family."
Ha family, what family I thought. We were nothing like the other families in village, but my thoughts were interrupted by a sharp smack on the head. "I told you to wake up." Rolling over to look into my father's face I glared up at him as he walked out of my room. I reached for my spear and shaping rock and began to scrap the two together. Scrap scrap scrap scrap.
It was the only noise that calmed me; it was the only sound that made me feel like I was somehow scrapping away the monster my father had become, and everything that had gone so wrong in my life.
Every boy was there standing tall and gleaming with bright eyes for the momentous occasion. Each boy was around sixteen years of age and even though we looked like small boys today we would become men.
The young girls were watching from the sidelines as they twisted their fingers around their hair. I can see Marima, with her sweet brown eyes waving at me, wishing me luck. I can feel the nudges of my two closes friends, Toronto and Micron as they laughed at the way Marima batted her eyes at me. I puffed up my chest and gave them each a shove, "You just wish a pretty girl liked you." Micron elbowed me in the side and we laugh amongst ourselves as the Ruler stepped out to great us.
He was dressed in a gold encrusted breast plate; on his head was a crown adorn with peacock and wild turkey feathers that draped down to the ground. At his side was a small boy, only a few inches shorter than me, we all knew him as the so called Prince, but he was nothing more than a weakling. Hardly capable of holding a sword or spear he was too small and wimpy to be the next Ruler. Even the Ruler knew this; I could see the look in his eyes as he stared at his son. I really never understood the pain and embarrassment he must have felt.
Smiling amongst ourselves I can see the little Prince taking his place next to Micron as we gnashed our teeth together trying to scare him, it worked. His little knees shook as the Ruler shook his head in disgrace. "Deshako, the Prince is so weak, I bet we can take him down easily." Micron was whispering in my ear as the games were about to begin. I nodded in agreement and shot a threatening look towards the Prince, who just stared down at the ground.
The Ruler puffed out his chest and called the order we had all been waiting for, "Bring out the armory." Excited looks passed around the group as the chest covers, shields, arm bands and other metal workings appeared in front of us. "Alright boys now is the time for us to see the powers hidden inside of you. Each of you will pick two pieces and stand on either the left or right side of the arena." I heard Toronto let out a snort, arena? What was the Ruler saying? The so called arena was just a simple patch of dirt, where the grass had died, not much of an arena. Only two people at a time could fight on it, four people would be a disaster. My father shot me an angry look and I quickly jumped to attention. "Alright boys come one at a time to get your pieces."
The Prince was first, as was custom and he picked up a chest guard and a helmet. Everyone knew picking those two showed cowardice in that you were sure you would be killed without complete protection of all your vital body part. Micron went next and picked up a shield and helmet. I did not approve of those choices, and my father looked displeased as well. Then it was my turn.
Puffing up my chest I walked over to the armor and picked up two arm bands. My father looked very pleased as sounds of shock went though the clan. I knew my choice was a good one for my father had discussed what to pick over many a dinner conversations. "The last boy to pick up two arm bands was the Ruler himself. It is your duty to please the family name and do as the Ruler did." He would say.
I had rolled my eyes at my father at that time, but now seeing the smile on the Ruler's face showed me he admired my tenacity to show I did not need that much armor for protection. Trotting off I eyed Marima who waved and give me a look of shock, but I knew she was impressed. "Deshako what are you doing?" Toronto was reaching for my arm as I tried to brush him off as I went to the right hand side of the field. I knew I would be facing him in battle and he was one of the best. He was my friend and trying to warn me, but it was all nonsense to me, I was going to be the victor of this challenge.
The picking of armor went by quickly, but no one picked two arm bands like I had, I knew this was either a giant miscalculation on my part or these boys were weak. How childish I had been.
The Wiseman then stepped up and began to speak, "After today you are no longer boys but men." Roars went through the crowd as the Wiseman continued, "Through fighting your powers will be released. Keep an eye on your armor and understand the color it glows tells what power you have been given by the great Gods of this world. Now Fight!"
Micron showed his shield to the crowd as he tried to intimidate the Prince, whose armor gave off a light green glow. Quickly a giant vine appeared from the ground and wrapped itself around Micron's entire body. Micron yet out a yell as a burst of fire shot from his hands burning the vine to cinders. The crowd went wild with excitement as Micron rushed at the Prince again, who tried to cast another vine but Micron jumped over it as he shot fire out of his finger tips. The Prince stumbled backwards and cowered to the ground. But Micron was not done yet, kicking the helmet off the Prince he shot a burst of fire from his hands as the Prince released a sea of vines to cover the blow but his arms got burned anyways.
The crowd was screaming and shouting at the abilities the gods had given the two boys, as Micron let out a yell showing he had won. I rolled my eyes and thought what a waist. You could only use your power three times in one day and he had wasted it all on the weak little Prince. But my thoughts were soon interrupted as Toronto and myself were about to face off. I glanced at my arm shields and clashed them together showing I was not afraid. The crowd screamed and yelled as Toronto did likewise, by hitting his shield with his fist. I heard Marima let out a yell, "Go Deshako! Fight to the death!"
The battle began quickly, and to no surprise Toronto was already using his powers. His armor was glowing a light blue, as water shot out at me; he was controlling it like a whip, trying to knock me off balance. But here I had him beat, for he had a shield in one hand and the whip in the other, making it hard for him to stay balanced. He could tell I had deduced this and quickly he sprung at me , as I jumped out of his way and hit his shield with my fist.
My hand was throbbing with pain but I ignored it as I kicked and hit him again and again as his water whip hit my legs and arms. I was thankful in my choice, for the arm shields were the perfect piece of protection when fighting against a water whip. Suddenly an odd feeling came over me as I hit his shield again. A giant wind pulsated out of my fingertips flinging Toronto backwards. Looking down at my armor I saw it gave off a light yellow hue. Wind! Yes, wind was my power.
Rotating my hands back and forth I could feel the wind rushing through them, as I watched Toronto's water whip splash to grown and disappear. Smiling at my success I charged at him once more, as he was trying to conjure up more water. I could feel my feet almost not touch the ground as I butted heads with him and sent his falling backwards. The crowd was screaming with excitement as Toronto tried to create a vine of water around my feet, but I jumped out of the way as water fell limply to the ground. Twice he had used his power and I had only used mine once. But somehow I felt like I was still using it, like the wind was still all around me and at my control.
The ending battle was drawing near as Toronto showed the palms of both of his hands and water came rushing out, a giant wave almost as tall as me was coming right at me, but I clapped my hands together and suddenly the wall of water split as Toronto watched his wave vanish into the ground. Knowing he was defeated he removed his helmet and placed it on the ground. The screams from the clan were immense as I walked over to Toronto to shake his hand, "Well done Deshako, wind seems to suit you.
The battles went on for only a few more hours and the ending result was three light users, two fire users, one storm user, one wind user, three water users, and four earth users and 2 animal users. As I stood there with Toronto and Micron we laughed at the way some of the battles had played out.
Guzzling down hard cider, we felt like men. My father was nowhere to be seen so, I felt like I could relax, for once. "Deshako, so are you going to take down that storm user?" I turned around to see Marima with her brother Acris standing behind me. Acris had been given the power of the storm, a powerful ability. "Sure Marima I could take down that wimpy storm user any day." Acris eyed me but put out a hand, "If you are so sure how about we do it now. I have one more storm left in me and I am sure you have one more gust." Smiling at the excitement of another battle, I slammed my mug down and took his hand, "You got it Acris, out in the forest right now, in the old clearing. Be there."
Marima eyed me with a coy grin on her face as she ran up and whispered in my ear, "Go get him." My cheeks felt flushed as Micron and Toronto slammed there mugs down as we rushed off towards the clearing.
I clashed my arm shields together to warn off any that could be there, as Toronto and Micron beat their shields, "You are so going to get killed Deshako, Acris is by far one of the most well trained fighters in the whole village. Even your father thinks so." I shot Micron an evil look as he patted my shoulder, "I am just messing with you, take him down. I know Marima would love to see her brother eat some rocks." Letting out a laugh in agreement I could feel my body tense up.
Acris was a good fighter, a very well trained fighter. He would surely be the next Ruler on strength alone. Feeling my chest tense up on reaching the clearing I took a deep breath on seeing Acris and Marima had not arrived. "Hey man, are you ok?" Toronto was looking at me a little concerned. "Yea I am fine; I just need to get some water." Feeling I had gotten them off my back I walked towards the river, which was only about a five minute walking distance from the clearing. I could hear Toronto and Micron running after me, they were like two little puppies, lost without their mother to look after them.
On reaching the river something was different, I could not get it out of my head, but even the wind seemed to be pulsating in a different way, then I saw her. Her long slender body getting hit by the light drops of the water fall. Twisting curved dark grey rams horns were adorned on her head. Her light lavender goat was specked wtih dark black spots with ong whipping white hairs blowing around her hooves.
She did not move, and did not even say anything when she saw me. Her head just turned as her giant grey eyes gazed at me and then she turned back. Toronto and Micron looked as shocked and dumb founded as me. "Deshako, what in the world?" I could not speak I just looked at her. She looked nothing like the Minotaur clan I was in, and her angelic features looked like nothing either of us had seen before. "I wish I had looked at her more.
I started to climb the rocks to get a closer look at her, but this was the wrong move. Suddenly she looked in my direction and I froze as she stood up and closed her eyes. Giving me one last graceful look she began to run off. Shaking my head in disbelief, I watched Toronto and Micron rush after her. Climbing down from the rocks I joined in the chase.
I saw her light purple body dash behind a tree as Micron and Toronto ran in the other direction. Picking up a rock off the ground I threw it as she darted off. The rock hit her in the back leg causing her to fall over. I yelled for the guys to come back as I pulled out a piece of rope and quickly began to tie her legs together. She shot me a look of disgust and kicked and fought. "Deshako you caught her. What in the world is she?" Suddenly she transformed back and turned her head away. She was clearly upset and then I heard Acris, "You pathetic child I have been waiting this whole time where are you?
Picking up the strange creature the three of us rushed off back to the clearing, Acris looked furious. "Where have you been?" Placing the strange girl on the ground Acris let out a yell, "Deshako you caught a Sixtent? How in the world?" A Sixtent? My mind raced as I could recall the voices of the elders, "She ran off with a Sixtent." Looking down at this odd creature I felt like kicking her to death. Marima walked over and looked at her, "Hmm they are not that pretty." I heard the Sixtent giggle as Marima pounded her fists together. "Deshako you need to put a ring collar of water around her neck and then she is yours forever." I looked at Acris shocked but the Sixtent looked terrified on hearing these words and tried to break free. "Hurry Deshako or she will get away." Picking her up and running back to the river Toronto began to collect the water and spin it around and around in a loop in his hands. The Sixtent was fighting even more now, as Acris told me to use my wind power to freeze the ring around her neck.
It was a hard process; Toronto had to try to spin the water around her neck without breaking the cycle while I had to freeze it with cold wind. All the time the Sixtent was fighting and moving her head back and forth trying to break the ring. Micron held her still until the process was done. Once the ring was around her neck I could see something about her had changed. Her eyes looked damp and scared as she kept looking up in the sky. "Ok Deshako you can untie her now, that collar binds her to you, well that is at least how the story goes."
I looked up at Acris who just smiled at my fortune, but something was up. Even Toronto and Micron were acting a little off. Once the roped were cut, I watched her as she started to transfrom into a thin girl. She was wearing a long green flowing dress with emeralds I believe detailg te top as she stood up and look at me. "You monster!" That was it that was all she said. Her voice was soothing and rich and even though she has insulted me I felt like it was nothing.
I watched as Micron grab her arm, "How dare you talk to him like that, we caught you that is your own fault. Guess you should not have wandered off away from your home." Shaking her arm free she walked over to me. "No one is allowed to touch me but him!" Pointing her finger at me she stood by my side. It was odd having her there, but the anger and envy flowing in my friend's eyes was enough for me to see something was going to go horribly wrong.
Toronto and Micron were advancing towards her, "You little witch you think you can talk to us like that. Who do you think you are. Answer me!" The hostility in Micron's voice sent a shiver down my spine, but I soon found the reason I had shaken was the Sixtent was holding on to my arm. Her light cream hands were holding on to my dark furry arms tightly. Marima was furious and slammed her foot on the ground. "Get your paws of him, you!" I could feel the Sixtent cuddle even closer to me as she smiled at Marima. What in the world was going on? Pulling away from her, I tried to calm everyone down. "Guys that's enough, and you, don't touch me again." The sixtent just gazed off in the other direction as if she had not even heard me.
Acris was coming closer as he gnashed his teeth together. "How about this Deshako, you win this fight you get to keep your little trophy, but if I win she belongs to me." I watched his eyes glance longingly at the Sixtent, who just scoffed at his ego. "Fine Acris, you win she is all yours, it's a deal." Once I said those words I saw the Sixtent's head shoot back as her eyes glared at me with disgust. "Silly creatures you all are. Fighting over me, I am no different then you what makes you think I am worthy to be a prize or a trophy in a battle.
Her words were sharp like a knife but she had been right. I had no idea what she was or who she was, at that time, but for some reason Acris wanted her, which only meant he knew something I did not. His armor was already glowing white showing he was ready to fight. He had one shot and so did I, this would be a battle of wits and strength both of which Acris was above me in. As I stood there I noticed my armor was not lighting up, was I already out of power. I watched as the clouds over head started to look dark and menacing. This was going to be a disaster if I did not think fast. The rain started pouring down heavy and Acris charged at me.
Off to the side the Sixtent was sitting on a rock just staring at me. "Why did she always just looked at me and never said anything? It was her nature I guess, but I will never know now.
Acris was advancing quickly as the rain poured down soaking the ground. My feet could not find any holding as Acris pushed me backwards and I fell into the deep mud. I felt his fist hit me right in the jaw, as I kicked him hard in the gut trying to get him off. He stumbled off, as the rain fell now harder. Suddenly it was clear I had wasted it all, in making the collar I had used the last bit of wind power I had left. The sixtent was as good as his.
Suddenly the Sixtent stood up, a gust of wind surrounded Acris and me as the clouds blew away and the sun began to peek out over them. Acris looked furious as the Sixtent smiled and sat back down on the rock. Having Acris off guard I gave him a hard kick in the chest sending him sprawling to the ground. Marima was shouting something, about cheating and I watched my armor give off a faint yellow glow. Astonished to see I had a little more juice left I gathered up as much wind as I could and created a tornado. The Sixtent just watched as I held the tornado by the tail and used it as a whip. Crashing it into trees and into Acris, I heard him let out a scream. Marima was yelling something too, but then it was all over. The tornado vanished in a blink and Marima was running over to her brother's side.
Staring down at my hands I looked to see if I had done something, but then I felt her gaze on me. Staring at me with a soft smile in those big eyes it had been her doing. It was clear at that moment; the only one that would get to keep her was me.
Jumping down off the rock she walked over to me, no she was almost floating. Her hair blowing in the soft breeze as she twirled her hand around and around creating a small tornado in the palm of her hand. Reaching for my hand I watched as she placed the tornado in it. It pulsated around and around in my hand until I was sure it would vanish, but her hands would then reappear and give it more power. "I am Xisu , and today I belong to you."
PERSONALITY
The day I found Xisu my personality changed. Since, I was a calf I had only dreamed of my mother and yearned to have her by my side. Yet, when Oia became mine this all changed. I won't say I dreamed of sugar and rainbows far from it, my mind was tormented with thoughts of power. I became brash and bold and when my father shouted me down I would shout back. When his hand came towards my face I would swat it away. Xisu had given me the one thing I needed the most, confidence. She had transformed me into a leader and not the kind I am proud of. I was mean, blood thirsty. With Xisu by my side I could cast my power as many times as I wanted in a day. I never noticed how weak it made Xisu for all I cared for was power.
I became the leader in no time and paved my path in the blood of my brothers. I wore the crown of feathers and ruled over the village. I did many horrible things. I banished my friends, I drew my fist in anger at my father and saw his blood splatter the floor. I hunted and killed my enemies and everyone feared me. I think I even scared myself. My face was tense and tight as the childish boy that I had been melted away.
Yet, the one thing I know now is that monster is gone. When Xisu left me the clan rebelled and I hardly escaped with my life. Now, I sit in shadow and the mist of the forest's a wiser, older, and bruised beast. Yes, a beast, for I am no longer a man or Minotaur.
FRIENDS
Tukel is my daughter. I never really understood her but when I was banished she followed me. She is now 10 years old and mainly just a handful for me to put up with. Yet, her bright blue eyes, that she hides behind her long white hair, look just like her mother's. Wet and damp.
The Clan
Nestled in the heart of the Twilight Forest the Minotaur Clan was formed. It is hard to say how, but with all the wars that raged inside the forest and other lands we found our way here. The cool shade of the trees and the soft mossy grasses were perfect for shelter and so we stayed.
Due to us being refugees of other lands we understood the only way to stay safe was to fight and prepare for war. Wars had divided us and in the blood of our enemies we found unity. Our ways were simple, kill to eat, kill to survive, and ready the next generation in the same manner. We believed there was a higher power over us and when young boys were given their powers they made sacrifices to the gods, in thanks.
Our armor glows a few different colors to show the power we have been given. As we grow we went to masters who understood how to control their gifts, so they could kill faster than the rest. When it became clear we were at are teacher's level we were give boys to train and were ready to fight in the wars that terrorized the lands. The greatest honor was to die in battle, and every boy knew that was his fate.
For the girls, they did the planting, harvesting and all the other tasks since they had no powers. They never fought and that was how it would always be.
Fallen Friends and Brothers
Gritor of the Flame was my father. He was hard on me, and constantly I viewed him as the enemy. When, my mother ran off he never was the same. I really don't like to speak of him, so I will say to this day I hate and love him because he is the one that raised me. He died on the night of the Red Moon, the day the clan rebelled against me.
Micron and Toronto left me as soon as Xisu became mine. We butted heads many times, yet we had once been friends. I can steal see their childish faces, grinning at me over escaping a beating from my dad. I will always miss them. Their deaths were my fault, I knew the raid on the nearby village was risky but I did it anyways and knew they would not return.
Xisu, oh Xisu my little sixtent. She never told me that every time I used my power it drained her life force. I can truly say I loved her. I have never loved anything more than her, and I know I never will. To this day I don't cast a spell, I don't cause even a slight breeze. When she vanished she took my powers with her.

THE END
Well look at that, it appears the fire is dying. It must be near morning already. For now, I must hunt so you better go visit with another. Carefully he reaches for his spear and walks out. His shoulders slump as he drags his feet making it clear he hates himself.
