Flash of lightning

You are always unaware of how dark the night sky is until it is lit up.

Is it the flash of light that frightens most, or the contrasting blackness that your mind percieves after?

Or perhaps it's just the thunder..

Oh. Hello.

Aqua told me you'd be coming.

Or appearing, whatever. I have no idea how you got here. Share me yo sekrets wif me. Some time. Thanks.

I'm Saero. But you already knew that, didn't you? e__e You're a clever one...

BUT NOT CLEVER ENOUGH!!

:C

JK. I can't hit you with lightning. It's the internets.

-_- Well, okay. Where to start... uhm. Stats I guess. -points down- CONTINUE ON.

MAI STATS

Name: Dasaero
Pronunciation: (dah-sai-EH-ro)
Nickname: Saero or Sae
Age: 26
Gender: Male... :c
Species: Draik
Category: Conductor
Color: Electric
Family: Around
Mate: None; Not seeking one

Physical Appearance: Around the size of a large domestic canine. Build is similar. Long tail fans out at the end. Eyes and ears are larger; sight at hearing are sharp. Walks on all fours, but can easily sit on back legs and use his arms like a human's, and often does so. Body is lightly furred with longer fur over his cape, appearing to be more of a mane. Fur is water-proof. Has a second pair of transparent eyelids that shut during lightningstorms. These eyelids are specially formed to greatly lessen the damage done by light to the eyes.
Glowing stripes run down the body and illuminate the end of the ears, paws, and tail.
Lastly, owns a pair of large silver wings. Wings are light and hollow. However, they are thin shells of pure silver, with small silver veins running through their hollow insides and into the rest of the body. These veins help direct the flow of electricity through him.

Heestoreeeeee

I came from the sky. :c No, really, I totally came from the sky. My species lays their eggs in clouds. Waaaay high up in sky. The eggs are unimaginably light at the time they're laid, and as the embryo inside the egg develops and grows, the egg slowly becomes heavier. By the time the egg is heavy enough to drift down to earth, its shell is already incredibly strong and can easily withstand the impact of the landing.

But there are still a few flaws in my species' egg-laying habits. We aren't required to incubate our eggs. So whenever an egg is laid, it's left alone until the time of hatching... The main problem here is that clouds don't stay in one place. They're constantly being carried around, and so the eggs are, as well.

That's how most of our hatchlings end up far from their original tribes. Our parents literally dump us on a cloud and forget about us. And so we hatch, and we're like "WHAA? MOMMY? SADFACE." :C But one good trait is that we have an instinct installed in our BRAINSSS that causes us to seek out the rest of our species. Most of the time we can, and we generally succeed in picking out our parents and going on to live our lives in the tribe. But there's a select few cases where a few things interfere. Of course, there are predators.. but we're honestly pretty hard to eat. Even as babies. At that young age, our silver wings act as little spikes, and that's our main defence. Alternatively, as hatchlings we're still able to store and conduct electricity, and our hatchlings have been known to give a short but powerful shock to any close range threats. But like I was saying- there's other things that interfere, not just predators. Sometimes a tribe has stumbled on a young, adolescent dragon of our species following around another dragon- or a creature of an entirely different species altogether! Most of us usually wake up to the world alone, but when an egg hatches that has maybe been taken in and incubated by another species, or is just in the immediate visinity of another creature, it's very possible for that hatchling to imprint on what it's able to first see as its caretaker. These kids are rather hard to pry away from their adopted parents, but most of the time it's easy to see that they belong with the tribe- as most of us have a very similar color scheme.

When we're adults, we spend a lot of our time out at night. Most of us, anyway. There are still a few that, at an early age, spent much of their time roaming in the sunlight and so, their eyes adapted to the light and are much more tolerant of such bright surroundings. In case you were wondering and couldn't already tell, I'm not one of those select few. Being out in the sunlight hurts pretty bad because my pupils are ALWAYS SO DILATED. Augh. I need sunglasses or something. So I spend most of my time sleeping in the shade during the day. Or, maybe I luck out and there's a storm rolling in midday, and it's dark out anyway so I can be around in the rain.

Got sidetracked... But that's most of it for my species' history. As for my own history, well, nothing too out of the ordinary happened... though I was one of the babies who imprinted on an earthbound old dragon that I should have realized when I grew up a little more had way too many years on her to be able to lay eggs. But I loved her all the same, and she took care of me. I'm sure I got pretty out of hand, considering all the electricity I managed to store up and rerout as a youngster- and without even meaning to... Eventually she passed on- due to her old age- and while it saddened me, it also felt a little liberating. I had always had this nagging feeling that I was supposed to look for something- but the fact that I had a mother figure made me too intimidated to stray from her side for something that might not exist. But once she was out of the picture, I let my baser instinct take over and actually found my way back to the tribe that had dropped my egg years before. I figured my mother was the one who seemed most interested in me when I finally found them, considering the whole tribe sort of knew she had lost her hatchling one way or another. They were glad to hear that I'd fallen to an imprinting mistake, rather than be captured by a predator.

But, regardless, I didn't stay in my tribe for all that long. I was beginning to notice that most of the dragons there didn't care too much for... anything at all, really. They were lacking much emotion- most of them. There were some rankings, some members trained the younger dragons, there was a whole system, but that just made it all the more upsetting. I later attributed this to the fact that none of the draiks had really grown up with families or parents who cared about them. We can't fly until a certain age, so all hatchlings go a time living completely on their own until they mature enough to seek their "families" out. Death is taken very lightly, as is the birthing of an egg. It's all just sort of... "well, okay, that's nice," and it was, needless to say, really boring. I'm glad my hatching went "wrong" and that I had a real mother who cared about me for the start of my life.

So I left my tribe, and as I suspected nobody really cared, and dropped myself down to earth once again. I spent a lot more time walking than flying when it was dark out- because I was in no rush to get out of the BLINDING SUNLIGHT at night. I could take my time and really enjoy the earth and all it had to offer. My species normally spends most of their time in the air. We eat very little, and seldom stop to drink or rest. Being as light as we are, we can sleep in the air or on the ground whenever we feel like whatever... And if you're curious about our diet, it's mostly small birds or saltwater fish. Anything we can catch mid-flight without really having to stalk. As I was saying earlier, though, I started to spend a lot of my time walking, and that even helped build my leg muscles. If you ever see a traditionally raised draik of my species, you'll see that they've often got really spindly limbs, because they rarely use their limbs. Most of their movement consists of their bodies and tails just rippling and carrying them through the sky.

... SO I LEFT MY TRIBE and started walking on earth and stuff. I mentioned earlier about how our tribes have like ranks and training and stuff... Well, most of my species' tribes are split up into different job skills later on. Usually when we hit adolescence, the older members of the clan can identify which skill set we would work best with. All have something to do with electricity or lightning- there's very few that have to do with thunder, but sometimes it happens.

For example? I'm a conductor. (more detail later) If you don't know much about lightning, I'll explain. Most often than not, lightning is negatively charged, and so when it hits the earth, it's supposed to blast it with a negative charge, and that's a good thing! See, the earth itself is already negatively charged, and the atmosphere is positively charged. Lightning's negative charge, when hitting the earth, helps it keep that negative charge, and in turn keeps the balance between earth and atmosphere.

... Or something like that :P All I know is that lightning doesn't hit the earth on its own. Conductors like me are who the lightning hits. Negatively charged lightning kind of... seeks us out- or rather we seek it out and it hits us because of these massive silver wings and junk. So what happens is it hits us, super hard, rattles around in our veins for a bit and then we slam our paws and tails into the ground and boom! Negative charges for the earth. Not too exciting, but necessary and helpful.

Of course, if you want exciting and wild- like lightning "should" be, some think- there are those few conductors who have to deal with the destructive force of lightning. They tend to separate from their clans, as they're usually much too unstable to function around normal draiks. They essentially do the same job as I do, only they don't send negative charges through their paws and tail into the ground. They take the lightning they receive and store it for a short amount of time, and then redirect the white-hot electric energy at, say, a forest, or a building- occasionally individuals as well. You can guess, I'm sure, how "well" that turns out for them. But it happens, it's what lightning does to some dragons, and the clans generally have no intention of really trying to stop it... It's a bit sad, but that's this world.
