Greetings and warm salutations guest!
Etiquette : rules governing socially acceptable behaviour
When you enter any new culture - and Neopets certainly has its own culture - you're
liable to commit a few social blunders. You might offend people without meaning to,
or you might misunderstand what others say and take offense when it's not intended.
To make matters worse, something about cyberspace makes it easy to forget that you're
interacting with other real people, not just pretty fonts and avatars.
The main premise I am using here, is that most people
would rather make friends
than enemies, and that if you can understand the following basic, sensible suggestions,
you're less likely to make the kind of mistakes that may prevent you from making friends!
The list of points below, and the explanations that follow, are offered here
as a set of general guidelines for polite and respectful neoboard interaction.
They won't answer all your Neo-Netiquette questions. But they should give
you some basic principles to use in solving your own Neo-Netiquette dilemmas.
Neopets have their own set of rules for the neoboards here that you should
read carefully before you even start to chat on the neoboards themselves.
So… you want respect, credibility and to get
full enjoyment from the neo-boards?
It is not that hard to achieve!
Below is a list of 'polite standards' that are used all over the world in different chat
forums, public boards and other internet forums. And no, guest, you don't have
to follow them EXACTLY, or even at all to gain respect - not even my Lauzi follows
them perfectly all the time! We are all only human, and we all have emotions and
respond to different things in different ways. If we can remember that, and to respect
the opinions of others that might differ to your own, then the following suggestions and
pointers should not offend you in any way!
It is often a good idea to read through the boards for a while before
you post new ones, or post on those existing already.
Knowing what sorts of issues are discussed and what boards are already here will
let you post relevant messages and get useful replies. There is no point in asking
a question that was answered on the topic a few lines down!
Remember that you are dealing with people, not just computers.
And people have feelings!
Writing is different from speaking, and depending on how well you write, you might
come across as abrupt, or even rude. THIS SORT OF SENTENCE IS DIFFICULT TO
READ AND IS INTERPRETED AS SHOUTING!! And nobody likes to be shouted at, right?
I know I don't!!
Act on the boards like you would act down the street!
Remember that the boards are public places, where hundreds of people congregate.
Behave as if you are in public, and never say anything that you would not like to see
repeated on the local news!!
Chatspeak should stay in your head!
Broken English is at least understandable!
Lik ONG R U Sris? CN U 1337 peeps GT WT I M sain?
If you post something like that, don't expect anyone to respond! The general rule is;
if someone has spent 5 minutes trying to decipher what you are writing,
it won't be read and you may find that you get ignored by the other users.
Look for a specific board before you make a carbon copy.
There is little point in posting a dozen quest help/BC entry/shop ad boards
that say the same things, in a matter of minutes of one another.
Believe it or not, by making your own board multiple times within a few minutes of
one another, you will find you get ignored 90% of the time by
those who lurk on your other boards who are ready to give you the help you need!
However, at the same time, there is no point attacking someone for making this mistake.
Often a polite redirection to a board with a similar subject gets a better
result than an outright attack on the board maker! After all, these are 'public boards
and everyone has the right to post on them, as long as what they are posting is Neopets-related.
Be careful how you phrase things.
Written messages don't have the tone-of-voice and gestures that convey much
of what people mean when they talk. That means it is easy to misinterpret
jokes as serious statements. The same goes for the reader.
Don't create a spectacle of yourself!
Don't agree with someone? Reply to their messages privately by neomail/webmail
if the response is only of interest to one person. This avoids flurries of
similar replies and subsequent flaming that has the potential to get people hurt,
upset, and in some cases, frozen. Neopets has moderators that watch the boards
and if they see an argument, they may intervene with a warning or board deletion.
Neo-related means topics about Neopets.
It's wonderful to share similar interests with others, give one another support and
generally have a lot of fun chatting about what you did that day... but the Neopets
chat board rules clearly state that topics must be neo-related.
Posting off topic boards can often get you reported.
Guilds were created for people who share similar interests, to get together and
chat about those interests away from the rest of the Neopian population.
Try looking here for a guild to suit your interests.
A little kindness goes a long way.
It doesn't take much effort to be kind and understanding. Most of the time!
If someone says something you don't agree with, don't turn around and be
needlessly rude in return. Perhaps they are having a bad day, perhaps they
don't know better. Or perhaps they are just not worth you wasting your time on.
It's sometimes better to just ignore threads and people, instead of responding and
causing more drama. That being said, don't think you cannot stand up for what you believe in!
Never. Ever. Try. To. Scam. Ever.
This should speak for itself.
The best way to lose all respect on the boards is to try and scam another Neopets player.
Scams are against the Neopets terms and conditions, enough said!
A little tact also goes a long way.
Tact is as simply defined as a careful consideration of the feelings and values
of another so as to create harmonious relationships with a reduced potential for conflict or offense.
Tact is a form of interpersonal diplomacy. Tact is the ability to induce change
or communicate hurtful information without offending through the use of consideration,
compassion, kindness, and reason. For example, choosing an appropriate joke to entertain
a small audience requires tact. Contrarily, a tactless joke is likely to make an audience
angry or uncomfortable.
Being tactful is often as easy as reading something you write aloud before pressing that
post your reply' button. If it sounds derogatory or hurtful or less than pleasant - delete :)
Do unto others...
Report and move on.
As the title says, its that simple.
See something on the boards that is against Neopets rules? Report.
Don't linger and 'backseat moderate'. Neopets monitors are more than
skilled in dealing with situations bought to their attention.
Let them do their jobs. There is also no point in telling the person
you have reported them. You are only bumping the offending board!
So basically, I guess the one rule you should always keep in mind, is:
treat others the way you want to be treated.
Nobody wants to feel unwelcome on public boards, and people are always going to
disagree on different points and have different opinions. However, with a little bit
of understanding, sensibility, knowledge, and maturity, you can help to make the
Neopets boards a more pleasant place to visit.
So... who are YOU to tell US what to DO??
Ah, the crux of so many of my neomails of late! Who am I? Why I am Cultured, Queen of politesse,
curator of class, expert on all...
-gently takes pen from Cultured-
Ahem... Actually, I, Lauzi, a nobody. Just a long time premium user who has been listening to the same
complaints over and over again about the state of the Neoboards, both premium and normal.
I made this page more to remind people that you are not communicating with computers
when you make your nasty or silly comments on the public boards, you are actually communicating
with people. Real, live, people with feelings that can be hurt as easily as your own.
And as I have made it repeatedly clear throughout this page, these are not RULES.
These are simple guidelines, or reminders that should come naturally anyway to those with
good manners. I am not trying to enforce anything on anyone, but at the same time
I don't think it hurts to remind people that, like anywhere, there are certain
innate 'do's and 'don'ts that will ensure that not only you, but everyone else enjoys
the game to their fullest.
Can I link to your page?
Sure! there are buttons at the bottom that you can put on your pet page, lookup,
or anywhere else you think they might look pretty.
Hey, didn't this page used to belong to another pet??
Yes! This page was originally hosted by my Scorchio Tiambo.
But he didn't like the attention he was getting so he passed the page onto his sister.
Can I send you something in thanks for making this page?
You are a sweetie, but I would rather you didn't. If you want to send me something,
a neomail is more than enough for thanks!
Someone was mean to me on the board and when
I mentioned this page and they got meaner. Help!
Nobody has a right to harass you, remember that! It is directly against Neopets Terms and Conditions.
If they are being mean to you about referring them to this page, just tell them to bring their complaints
to me, and leave the board. Nobody is forcing you to read the things that might upset you,
but at the same time, nobody has the right to make you feel unwelcome on public boards.
Where can I congratulate or complain to your owner, Cultured?
Lauz loves to hear your complains and comments regarding this page.
Just neomail her here.
