Obiwanpi's Guide to THE ATTACK OF THE SLORGS!

Is the Attack of the Slorgs just one of those impossible games to you? Have you tried and tried and tried to get the avie, to no avail, and finally given up? Well despair no more! The Slorgs will not destroy this year's crop so easily! An Attack of the Slorgs guide written by Neopia's top scorer in Attack of the Slorgs is here!

When I first Started playing Attack of the Slorgs, (AotS for short), I could not get over 500 points. Now, I have a achived the AotS top score not only once, not twice, but THREE TIMES!! The first time I got the top score, ny score was 8053. The Second time, My score was 10779, which beat out the competitiom by over 2500 points!! Later that month, that score was beaten by someone with a score of 12571. However, I recaptured the top score (or will when the score is reviewed, when I BEAT THE GAME on 4/29/06, with a score of 14344! I MAY have been the first person to do so, but I'm not sure. How did I do it? Read on to find out!

The Short Story Behind the Guide:
I've been very debated about putting this guide on a petpage. This guide was originally written as a Neopian Times article. However, It never got into the neopian times because apperently the TNT does not allow you to put game codes (which are essential to getting a good score at AotS in my opion) in the Neopian Times, even though they are readily availible on peoples petpages. However, I have finally decided to make my AotS guide into an petpage.

The Avatar:
There is an Avatar for AotS. It looks like this:

It take only a measly 1000 points to get this avie!

Before I get into the actual guide, let me tell you about a little easter egg in the game that I like. On the starting screen, click the pupil of the yurble's eye that I have circled in blue. And a staffmember named Oliver, Ollie, or The POSG (Phantom Orange Shirt Guy) pops up on the screen. Who is Ollie? Well, for starters, he's the guy who I have circled in red. He also has coded several of neopets games, many other of which he has inserted himself into. Oh, and, when he's on the neocam, he has a habit of doing funny things with a toy T-Rex. Anyways, he's really cool! Activating this easter egg has become my good luck ritual. It's probably just psycological, but I DID win the game durring a game in which I had activated this easter egg!

The Rules:
If you are completely new to AotS, you might want toread the rules over and maybe play a level first, so you know what I'm talking about. Reading written instructions in a guide is not as help in this game as reading neopet's instructions on the Attack of the Slorgs page and then playing a level or two. It is really hard to explain the exactly how the game works, but it is rather easy to learn by playing the game some.

The First Priority:
The first priority in AotS is always surviving to the the next level. I will introduce several ways to make extra points, but none of these are as valuable as the extra points you get from an extra try at a level. This is VERY important to remember.

The Second Priority:
The second priority in AotS is to get the right slorg types fast. If you have a slorg of a color which is different from the color of any slorg that you can hit at the moment (or soon), intentionally miss with that slorg.

Slorg Paths:
There are 6 different paths which the slorgs could follow to your crops, shown below. I will refer to them as paths A, B, C, D, E, and F. (replace with screenies)
Path A:

Path B:

Path C:

Path D:

Path E:

Path F:

Path A is the easiest, and path E is the hardest. Know these paths well, it will be very useful in the game.

Things Which Can Happen:
There are a couple somewhat random things which can happen in this game. I have them listed below:

Laser Failure: This is the most common of these random things. The laser, or aiming line, goes off for the rest of the level. This was EXTREMELY annoying when I first started playing, and why I could not score over 500 points. Your aim gets completely messed up without this. However, as I discovered later, there is a way to get the laser back. See the code section for this.

The Crazy Frog: This is the second most common random thing. A frog will sometime pop up in the top left corner of the screen. If there is not a good reason not to, try to shoot him. If you succeed, the slorg-be-gone ball and the frog will disappear, and you will get the crazy frog bonus of 25 points! He only stays up for a couple of seconds, so you need to get him fast! Some guides I've seen say that this is the best thing to practice to get points, but I think that staying alive and the multiplier combos are better things to practice.

The frog shown in the image below.

The Revenge of the Slorgs: MUHAHAHAHA! It's a good thing that this will not occur in over 50% of your games! What this effectively does is reverse your left and right arrow keys for the rest of the level! If you've ever had to play a level with slorg path 3 with this, you'll REALLY see why these slorgs are evil!

Codes:
There are 2 codes for AotS. The codes must be typed without you hitting any other codes in the middle of typing them, INCLUDING THE CONTROLS! Also, while you should still try to type fast, be careful while using the codes. Don't press the "Q" key. It ends your game. why would someone THINK to hit the "Q" key, you ask? The the "A" (answer) to that question is that they don't. It just happens the the "Q" key is located right above the "A" key! The letter "A" just so happens to be in both of the codes. Your finger doesn't need to be off by an inch to accedentally hit the "Q" instead of the "A" and the game's over for you. This can be annoying at any time in the game, imagine what it would be like to do that with a score around 5000 ? Well, I've done it. Multiple times. Thankfully, this was after I got my first gold trophy, but believe me, even THAT is extreamly agrivating. so pay attention to that. The codes are:

marrow: Type this any time during the game to get an extra life. This code works once per game WINDOW! (This means that if you attempt to use this code in a new game in the same window as a game where you have already used this code IT WILL NOT WORK!) This code can actually rack in over 1000 extra points when you get good at the game.

You see? 4 lives!

chargex4: *cheers* This code is singly the most helpful thing in the game for me. When your laser fails, you can type this to bring it back. There is NO LIMIT on the number of times you can use this code! With practice, you should be able to type this code in less than 2 seconds.

Note: There is a rumor that typing slorgerizer gives you the slorgerizer power up. (See later section on the subject.) I have tested this code for just about all possible meanings of what it's supposed to do, and IT DOES NOT WORK!

Types of Slorgs and Their Power Ups:
There are 6 different colors of slorgs, and each has their own power up. You can tell weather the slorg-be-gone balls you are about to fire is a power up, because the power up balls pulsate. The different colors of slorgs, any relevant facts about them, their power ups, and my opinion of their power ups are all listed below:

Red Slorg: One of the 3 starting colors of slorgs.
Power up: Super Slorgerizer: This is a fairly good power up. It destroys 2 slorgs on either side of where it hits the column. If used carefully, this power up can get you a clear bonus or multi combo bonus. It can often be a life saver if you need to kill a couple slorgs quick to keep them from getting to your crops. However, I still usually miss intentionally with this power if I have the slorgs slowed, as the slowdown powerup is more important.

Blue Slorg: One of the 3 starting colors of slorgs.
Power up: Slorg block: I don't like this power up so well. It blocks all slorgs behind where it hits the column. The problem with this power up is that when you kill slorgs behind the block, it doesn't move the one in front of the block back, and starts the slorgs marching again. This can be especially annoying in levels with slorg path F. If you in any way destroy the back of the moving line without destroying the whole line, of slorgs, the lines will join again, and the slorg block will disappear. If you wait a while with all slorgs in front of the block destroyed, you will have extra slorgs added to the column for delaying the game when you finally start them going again. I will often intentionally miss when I get this power up.

Green Slorg: One of the 3 starting colors of slorgs.
Power up: Slowdown: This is a good power up. It slows down the column of slorgs if it hits the column. This is helpful, as it gives you more time to hit the slorgs. This power ups effects are negated by other power ups Because of this, I recomend that you NOT use any other power up while you have the slorgs slowed down except for slorg destruct, if you feel that you really NEED the slorgs slowed down on that level.

Bright Red Slorg: This slorg color appears first in level 4.
Power up: Multislorg: Bad! Avoid having this power up hit the column at all costs! It adds about 10 SLORGS to the column where it hits! On Slorg path F, where you have no more than about 30 slorgs on the whole path, ONE hit with this can easily seal your fate!

Gray Slorg: This rare slorg color appears first in level 4, and can only be fired, they do not come out in the column. These slorgs should not be confused with the gray slorg blocks, and I try to miss these, with the exception of the power up.
Power up: Puddle Water: This rare power up is often a life saver. When it hits the column, it turns all slorgs in the column to one random color. Wait until the slorgs are about 2/3 of the way to the crops to fire this one, and then miss all the slorgs until you get a super slorgerizer, a slorg of the color that the power up turned the slorg, or a slorg destruct. Fire the the slorg of the same color anywhere on the column, the super slorgerizer somewhere in the middle, or treat the slorg destruct as you usually would.

Pink Slorg: This slorg color appears first in level 6.
Power up: SLORG DESTRUCT!: YAY! *cheers* I can't count the number of times this semi-rare power up has been a life saver! This power up DESTROYS ALL SLORGS BEHIND WHERE IT HITS THE COLUMN! Yes, you heard me, ALL of them! It is such a life saver when the slorgs are almost to the crops! Also, if the slorgs are not almost to the crops, wait until the front of the column (be conservative about where this is) is at the farthest point along the path that you can hit, and fire at it! (If there is an already set up multi combo at the front, fire right behind the combo). This is great for getting those extra slorgs needed to beat the higher levels, and, if used correctly, can be used to get extra points, as well! (For example, one time, I needed one more slorg to complete a level with slorg path A, and I got a Slorg Destruct. I waited, until the slorgs were almost to the crops, and fired, giving myself almost 100 extra points for that level!)

Multiplier Bonuses:
There are two different ways you can multiply your score for the slorgs you killed in one shot. Try to see how high a multiplier bonus you can get. My record multiplier bonus is 7.

First, what I call the multi combo bonus. If you are familiar with Suket's Tomb, it works on a similar to the multi combo bonus in that game. Say you have a row of slorgs of the following colors:

If you fire a blue slorg so as to create 3 blue in a row, you will destroy the blues. However, this then creates a row of 3 reds, and those are also destroyed, and you get double points for those slorgs!
The effects compound. For example, if you have the slorg row:

And you fire a blue slorg in the same place as the last time, when the pink slorgs are destroyed, you get a x3 bonus!
This multiplier is great to use on the early levels, where you can set up big combos and not have to worry much about the slorgs getting to the crops. However, as you progress farther in the game, while this bonus is still important, it will be much more important to simply get the slorgs before they get to your crops.

The second multiplier bonus is called the clear bonus. You get this bonus for clearing the screen, and it multiplies your score for that shot by 2. (If you clear the screen with a multi combo, it only adds one to your multiplier.) This bonus is especially good to go for in the upper levels, where you don't have the time to set up multi combo bonuses.

Aiming:
This is the skill part of AotS. It is not as simple as it seems. First of all, the laser is necessary to do this well, and that is why the chargex4 code is so important.
When the laser line is perpendicular to the slorg column where it is aimed, the slorg goes right where it hits the column. However, when the slorg column is at a closer angle to the laser, it gets harder. In this case, the laser should be a little bit away from the slorg column where you want the slorg to hit. My only advice for figuring this out is A: I don't have it perfect yet, and probably won't ever perfect it, and B: the best way to improve is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

Levels:

There are 18 levels in Attack of the slorgs. I have data and strategies for them all below:

Slorg Path: A
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 30.
Description: Easy! A great opportunity to try out the the multi combo bonus.

Slorg Path: B
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 50.
Description: Basically the same as the last level, but with a slightly shorter slorg path.

Slorg Path: C
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 75.
Description: This level is the first level where you have to deal with shooting at the vertical slorg column. Until you get really good at this, you can't spend as much time on the multiplier bonuses as you did in the last 2 levels.

Slorg Path: D
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 100.
Description: The Gray Slorg and the Bright Red Slorg with its EVIL multislorg are introduced in this level. As long as you are careful not to hit the column with a multislorg, you can basically treat this level like level 1 or 2.

Slorg Path: E
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 125.
Description: Your personal introduction to the hardest, evilest, slorg path in the game. I lose over half the lives I lose on levels with this path. Your goal should be to destroy the slorgs as quickly as possible.

Slorg Path: F
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 150.
Description: The shortest slorg path in the game, so you need to destroy the slorgs quick! Thankfully, unlike the last level, most of the path is easy to hit! And. don't forget, this level introduces you to the pink slorg, with its great SLORG DESTRUCT! *applause*

Slorg Path: A
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 175.
Description: You can mess around with multi combos some in this level, as it is the easiest slorg path. However, as soon as they turn the first corner, start seriously getting rid of the slorgs in this level.

Slorg Path: B
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 200.
Description: You can mess around with multi combos some in this level, however, your primary goal should be to keep the slorgs from turning the first corner.

Slorg Path: C
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 225.
Description: You should take this level seriously. Your primary goal should be to keep the slorgs from turning the first corner, and destroy as many slorgs as possible as quickly as possible.

Slorg Path: D
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 250.
Description: Use a similar strategy to level 8 for this level.

Slorg Path: E
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 275.
Description: Ugh! This is the level that kills me the most besides levels 17 and 18! You have the hardest slorg path back, with more than twice as many slorgs! No nonsense in this level, your primary goal should be to destroy as many slorgs as possible as fast as possible, holding back the march of the slorgs!

Slorg Path: F
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 300.
Description: This level can be deadly because of the short slorg path. Use a similar strategy to level 11 for this level.

Slorg Path: A
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 350.
Description: AH! Back to path A! However, due to the sheer number of slorgs, your strategy for this level should be more like that of levels 8 and 10 than level 7.

Slorg Path: B
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 400.
Description: Due to the sheer number of slorgs, your primary goal should be to destroy as many slorgs as possible as quickly as possible keep the slorgs from turning the first corner.

Slorg Path: C
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 450.
Description: You should take this level seriously. Your primary goal should be to keep the slorgs from turning the first corner, and destroy the slorgs as possible as quickly as possible.

Slorg Path: D
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 500.
Description: Due to the sheer number of slorgs, your primary goal should be to destroy as many slorgs as possible as quickly as possible keep the slorgs from turning the first corner.

Slorg Path: E
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 1000. (Yes, you heard me, 1000!)
Description: MUHAHAHAHA! This level is InSaNe! I had never beaten this level untill recently, and, a one poinr, was conviced that this was THE FINAL level! (I found out that that was an incorrect assumption through correspondence with another user before I actually beat it myself. I would get up to this level with all 4 lives, and then loose ALL of them. You want to kill AS MANY SLORGS AS POSSIBLE, AS FAST AS POSSIBLE, AND KEEP THE MARCH OF THE SLORGS BACK AS FAR AS POSSIBLE! Take FULL ADVANTAGE of EVERY slorg destruct of puddle water. Besides that this level is simply staying calm and not letting the doubling in the number of slorgs scare you, a PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! No matter HOW MANY TIMES you've died on this level, no matter HOW CLOSE YOU ARE to finishing, DO NOT allow yourself to get tense, as that causes you to be inaccurate. You should be quick, but speed is no good if your shots are inaccurate!

Slorg Path: F
Number of Destroyed Slorgs Needed to Finish the Level: 5000. (Yes, InSaNe, mind bogling, and hard to believe, but I have a screenie to fix that last problem!)
Description: For a long time, I did not belive that this level existed. (I found out about this level's existence before I actually got to it myself, through corospondence with another user). This level is basically like level 17, but with a coulpe of differences. First, it is 5 times longer than level 17, and you feel it. It drags on for 2-3 hours, and by the time that you're done, the oly reason you aren't bored silly is that you REALLY need to go to the bathroom! The other difference is related to the slorg path. I would recomend that if you have the slorgs slowed, and they are not close to the end of their path, that you NOT use slorg destructs. This is because, unlike levels privous to level 17, in which a slorg destruct will destroy over 10% of the slorgs, in this level, a slorg destruct destroys less than 1% of the slorgs! the slow down power up is MUCH more valuable than the 30-50 extra slorgs a slorg destruct will give you. This is the last level in the game! Good luck!

Winning the game:
You get 100 bonus points for winning the game.

Of course, the 100 bonus points aren't worth much, because the absolute, unrealistic, minimum number of points that you could win the game with is 9755, but...

Extra point scoring tips for expert players:
This guide is written mostlyfor people who are still learning the tricks of the game, however, once you get REALLY good at the game, first, you don't have to take some of the levels as seriously as I say in the level descriptions. Second of all, I have 3 tricks you can try to increase your score.

1.
If you have the above or a similar pattern of slorgs as part of the column, and you get a red slorg-be-gone ball, your instinct is to fire it at the red slorgs. That makes the most sense, right? WRONG! Fire it at the opposite side of the of the blue slorgs from the red slorgs. If you're wondering WHY, think for a bit. Did I mention the pattern of slorgs that you have now formed earlier in the guide? Yes, what you just did by firing the red slorg where you did was set up a multi combo bonus. When you get a blue slorg-be-gone ball, you can fire it at the blue slorgs, and get a multi combo bonus! Note: I would not recomend using this trick on slorg paths C, E, or F, because in paths C and E, the slorgs often go into areas where they become har to hit, and in path F, it wastes time, which is OH SO IMPORTANT on this short slorg path.

2. Multi Combo Puddle Water.
Instead of waiting untill the slorgs are 2/3rds of the way through the path, fire it when they are about half way there. Then, fire 3 of a DIFFERENENT color of slorg-be-gone balls is the middle of the slorgs, which have all been turned the same color. This way, you get a multi combo bonus, DOUBLE points on ALL those slorgs! Note: Again, I would not recomend using this trick on slorg paths C, E, or F, because in paths C and E, the slorgs often go into areas where they become hard to hit, and in path F, it wastes time, which is OH SO IMPORTANT on this short slorg path.

3. Slorg Destruct.
Try NOT using it, unless the slorgs are getting close to your crops. You can get more points from combos that way.

General Tips:
To sum the article up, I have 3 general tips for AotS:

1. Timing is important.
It's not so important what time you play the game if you're just going for the avie, but if you want a trophy, make sure you go to the bathroom before you play, and make sure you don't have any commitments for a while. Also, you can take bathroom breaks between levels. It took me over 2 hours to get my top score!

2. Practice Makes Perfect.
Don't expect to get a high score on your first attempt. Before I got my high score, I played one game every day for a month, slowly improving. Those practice games are essential to getting a high score.

3. NEVER GIVE UP!
This is probably the most important general tip. If the slorgs are almost to your crops, DO NOT get discouraged and say "I'm gonna lose." Just try to stay focused on keeping them from getting any farther, and moving them back. While all three of these situations were nerve-wracking, I have: recovered from the slorgs being about 5 slorgs away from the crops, hung on long enough to finish a level when the slorgs were about 10 slorgs away from the crops, and held on for about 3 minutes with the slorgs perpetually about 5 slorgs away from the crops and then gotten a slorg destruct! Also, if you do lose, don't get discouraged, you can always try again tomorrow!

I hope my guide helps, and good luck defending your crops!
Now that you know how to play the game well, go and PLAY it!

P.S. I would like to thank renrenthehampster for proof reading the original neopian times article, and the person who originally told me about level 18. I can not remember your exact username, so please contact me if you would like me if you want to be credited by username.

NOTE: I have more or less stopped playing neopets, so please don't try to neomail me. I've left this guide up because people found it helpful, but I'm more or less not around anymore. Thanks.
