Meet Cobalt
You enter a small dimly lit room. The walls are lined with bookshelves stuffed full and almost overflowing with books, parchments, and scrolls. On every available surface, and even stacked on the floor, are more stacks of books, vials and flasks of indeterminate substances, strange artifacts, and other paraphernalia of magic.
Near the center of the room is a worn wooden table on which sits what seems to be very basic potion mixing equipment. Seated at the table is an anthro Halloween Ixi with his face buried in a huge book. He is small and appears very young. Unlike most Halloween Ixis he doesn't have a long pointed tail but a normal short, fluffy ixi tail. His fur is deep red, except his belly, the underside of this tail, his neck, muzzle, lower face and up around his eyes. These areas are a light cream. The membranes of his wings are velvety black. His hooves and horns are dusty black. His large bright eyes are cobalt blue, and they match the stone in the black collar around his neck. His clothes are the warn and tattered attire of an apprentice or a student, with no time or funds for nice clothes. On his face is a pair of round wire rim glasses.
He looks up when you enter, then waves a hand dismissively at you and looks back down at his book. His hands are covered by ripped and worn fingerless gloves, and the tips of his fingers are solid black hoof.
Go away I'm busy." He mutters. After a pause he looks up again, gives you a crooked little smile and sets down his book. "Sorry, I get cranky when I get wrapped up in studying. But I could use a break and someone to chat with, please, sit down." He points to the chair apposite his at the table, but you have to clean off a stack of books in order to sit.
My name is CobaltTrigger." He laughs. "Yes I know it's a weird name, but it's mine, and I like it. You can call me Cobalt, no need to rattle out my full name all the time. You could probably guess I'm studying to become a wizard. It's a lot of hard work, but it's the only thing I've ever wanted to do. Magic fascinates me. And the power to do so much! I mean, just think of all the things that can be done with magic, the possibilities are endless."
Have you heard of Sophie the Swamp Witch? I'm sure you have, she's the most powerful witch in Neopia. Well, at least I think she is. I think we have a lot in common. She's a witch and I'm-- well I'm going to be a wizard. We both like to be alone a lot, and we don't care what others think of us, and we both work really hard to get what we want."
Sophie well... she's kind of my idol. " Cobalt blushes slightly as he says this, but smiles boldly and goes on. "Yeah I mean, she's so amazing, isn't she? Did you hear about how she defeated that huge mutated Bruce and saved her family and the whole town of Neovia? Well okay she had help, her brother and that annoying little usul. And everyone else who helped. My siblings, Lyre and Saerhyn helped, with digging up graves and that stuff. I wanted to help too, to use my magic, but I was too young and inexperienced. I'm still not very good, to tell the truth, but I'm getting better!"
If Sophie can become as powerful as she is with no help at all--that stupid faerie left her all along when she was little--then surely I can become even more powerful with all the classes I'm taking. I know I can!" His eyes shine with determination.
Caring for the Lab Rats
But you know, not all my time is spent studying magic. Oh sure it takes up a lot of my time, but I've got to take time for other things, ya know? Not least of all is my responsibility to the lab rats. You see, the account I live on is my owner, Meer's lab account. I am the only permanent, never changing pet here. Because I am Meer's only anthro pet, and because of my knowledge of magic it is my responsibility to care for the pets here that are being zapped by the lab ray.
You see, getting zapped by the lab ray takes it's toll on a pet, both physically and mentally. Think about it. Everything about them is constantly changing, their strength, how fast they can move, their color, even gender and what species they are. All of that stuff going on is bound to have lots of strange side effects. Sometimes they feel depressed or confused, wouldn't you? And sometimes the zap from the ray is painful, or causes tingling or numbness. And all those changes in their body can cause soreness, stiffness, problems with coordination, the list goes on and on"
So I use magic to help them deal with all that. I can make potions and salves to help them with their discomfort and calm them. And I am learning to cast healing spells as well. Or sometimes I just brew some tea and sit and chat with them. Sometimes all they need is a sympathetic ear. My brother Reihakai has taught me how to make some lovely teas, and he's also teaching me meditation and relaxation techniques to share with the lab rats."
Also, my knowledge of magic includes quite a bit of knowledge of science as well. So I am able to study and understand all the changes that go on with the lab rats. This gives me better understanding of what they're going through. I am also studying the effects to try to understand what goes on with the lab ray and how it works. As well as caring for the lab rats themselves I am also monitoring them and recording their changes. I am in charge of keeping the lab logs and studying them over time."
Mostly I like this job, I guess I kind of have a scientific mind. I like to study things and find things out. But there is one lab rat who is kinda hard to take care of. That is MalignClockwork. He is more mentally unstable than all the others. In fact I think he's quite insane. Sometimes I call him Tick, because he twitches and ticks almost constantly. I can never get him to talk coherently for more than a minute, and he gets very upset if things aren't just right. This makes him very hard to take care of. But he seems to love the lab ray. Most pets don't like the sensation of being zapped, or are at least a little apprehensive about it. But Clockwork seems to enjoy it. Every day it's the same. He rants and raves and begs to be zapped. Is it his turn to be zapped yet? Please please please? I don't understand him at all. But getting zapped by the ray seems to make him happy, so we keep zapping him."
DeliriumStar The Magic Guinea Pig
When I was born and brought into this family, my older brother and sister, Lyre and Saerhyn, were busy digging up graves to help Sophie in the Tale of Woe. I wanted to help too but I was just a baby and only got in their way and annoyed them. I admit I did make a nuisance of myself so I don't blame them for loosing their patience with me."
During the digging my siblings dug up a lot of slorgs. Apparently slorgs like grave dirt, ew. So anyway they gave one to me to occupy me so I'd leave them alone. I didn't really want a slorg for a petpet, but I took him anyway. I named him DeliriumStar because I like weird names. I call him Del for short."
One day while practicing my spells I got the wicked idea to test out a spell on my silly little slorg. Then I thought, well that was probably a mean thing to do. But my idol Sophie tested out potions on her meowclops so maybe...."
So I brought Del over and sat him down. I asked him if he would mind me testing spells on him. To my surprise he nodded and slithered right up to my wand. It seemed he was up for it. So I tried it. And my very first spell turned him into a wibreth. Well that was certainly more interesting than a slorg! And Del seemed okay, in fact I think he liked it."
So now every day I test out a new spell on my petpet. Now this helps me get better and better at magic. But also, since the spells I use have similar effects to the lab ray, I am able to use what I learn in testing Del to help me in my care and studying of the lab rat pets. And Del really likes changing into new things, he's a great sport. Except for that one time I turned him into soot, that wasn't so great."
But most of the time both of us really enjoy the spell experiments. I call Del my magic guinea pig. Here I keep a log of all the spells I've tried on him."
