But in the middle of all this, there is a soft, safe haven.
It's a little ways off from the tourist sites and the tiki hut residences, where the civilized and tamped down earth starts loosing the fight against the jungle growth. New little shoots of grass and saplings are a tiny prelude to the dense growth that suddenly appears, so thick it's impossible to see more than a few feet ahead. But upon close inspection, there is a tiny, almost invisible trail. With some effort, you can follow it.
It's not more than a five minute walk, just barely into the forest where the trees don't yet create a canopy blocking out all light. A big area of foliage is stomped down, and even torn and scratched up to make a large, soft play space. Around it all manners of gorgeous tropical flowers bloom happily, delicate jewel-toned butterflies dance in the air. Just a moment later, a stripey-spotty furball bounds into the nest, clumsily rolling around until she sees you.

Like all Kougas, Chulita loves a warm nap in the sun. Lucky we live on Mystery Island. Even with the unpredictable weather sending us flash showers,
Chulita just curls up on a sun-heated rock under a big leaf to stay cozy and dry. If she's not doing that, chances are she's playing with her sisters and
brother. She loves Chia hunting, and is getting pretty good at it. She also doesn't mind a bath, either in the ocean or at home in the tub.
Do Not Want. Gross flavors of baby food. Why don't you try it first? Bathtime is great, but the part about getting scrubbed and rinsed by someone else is
unpleasant to her. She also doesn't care to see herself dirty.
Mostly her paws. She does her best to stay tidy even when she's playing.
●●● A Baby Story ●●●
Chulita was not always a baby Kougra.
It's strange to think that as she got older, she suddenly became younger.
When she was created, Chulita was a red Eyrie. She had a twin sister, Chulita70710. From the day they came home, no one in artista_10s home ever knew
peace again. Chulita and her sister were always plotting, always playing tricks on their sister Azulita, and eventually on their brother
Tucker. But she lived up to her
name, which means Little Cute One.
We all used to live on Bread Street in Neopia Central. Life was very exciting, spent shopping in the bazaar to furnish our new house, exploring all from the Clouds of clouds of Faerieland to the swamps of primordial Tyrannia. But new worlds and paintbrushes and potions were popping up all the time, and painting or changing your pet became more common. No one in the house ever really asked for it, but you could see the longing in their eyes as we passed pets with shining new coats.
Azulita was the first to be painted. She was painted Faerie, and she was beautiful. Chulita thought so too, but the Eyrie knew she did not want to be anything so glamorous. She wanted something that would suit her life of tumbling and scampering around. And her love of startling the other pets.
On one trip to The Haunted Woods, Chulita found exactly what she wanted to be. She saw a Mutant Kougra prowling the streets, red eyes a glow and covered in strikingly strange, mangled fur. She set her heart on it.
We scoured the bazaar and the tiny, pet owner-run shops. Finally, we found her a Mutant Transmogrification Potion. Chulita gave me a big hug, and happily chugged the contents of the bottle.
Before
our eyes her beak became a muzzle, her ears went from feathered and pointed to round and fluffy, her wings dissipated, her tail
became fuller. But just as the anatomical change was happening, her fur turned a sickly color, and fell out in places. She, well, mutated into a
frightening creature. We
could still tell it was Chulita in her eyes, but even they were a little scary to look into.
Chulita lived for a little while like that. She loved how much easier it was to creep and stalk. Though they could no longer pull switch-a-roos, Chulita and her sister were still as close as ever. It just took some getting used to now that they were trully separate-looking individuals.
Halloween, was fun, of course. It was probably one Halloween in the Haunted Woods that Hugh started following her around. He wasn't trully her pet, then, he was just a frequent visitor. We never knew where he went or when he would come.
Well, after some time, Chulita found she was tired of even that appearance, as novel as it was.
Just one more change, she promised. And somehow I knew this would prove right.
Somehow, I don't remember exactly, we came to posess a Baby Paintbrush. We held onto it for sometime, not sure whether to sell it or trade it, or what.
Chulita, you're always my baby. And if you wanted, you know we have another paintbrush."
She looked a little dumbfounded. Really?
Yes, if you would like."
She nodded slowly at first, and then excitedly. We both knew it was a rare treasure at the time. Many people wanted one, and we could stand to improve our situation greatly if we were to just sell it. But you'll sacrifice anything to see your pet smile.
I found the paintbrush in the back of our Safe Deposit. We decided to make it a surprise for the other pets, who were out playing. But they just so happened to come in as we finished brushing the tip of Chulita's tail. Her fur came back in all downy and delicate, the most precious spots popped up all over, and of course she shrank down no bigger than your calf-height. She was a roly-poly ball of fluff.
She still understands everything she used to. Just in simpler terms, we think. And nothing will ever take away that michievous sparkle in her eyes. She's our Baby Chu
Chulita has a petpet. He is very sturdy, which is good for a teething kougra.
He is a Meepit named Hugh. Meepits are supposed to be rather scary, but we suspect he might like the snuggly baby life. Hugh is short for Jishughlugisha, which is Swahili for "Bringer of Destruction." Or something like that. It was one of her little babble-words, and she kept using it to refer to her new Meepit. It wasn't until later we stumbled on the fact that it's an actual word, and the translation.
She adores him. And he likes cudding with her. They both have big big eyes (albeit that Hugh's are more creepy than cute...). And they can both be a little destructive, I guess. They're perfect for one another.
Azulita707 is her older sister. She is a Flamboyant-Cuttlefish-Faerie-Peophin. She loves the little Kougra very much, but she doesn't love when Chulita and
Hugh pop
out at her when she least expects it. Chulita was done with looking scary, but she can't quite kick the habit of giving a scare every now and then. Still,
Azulita is always
keeping her baby sister safe and happy when she isn't out diving.
Chulita the Kougra and Chulita the Elephante are probably the closest of all the pets. They spend all day playing in the jungle. They both swear Chulita
the Elephante
can fly. How else would she get up in the treetops the way she does? And big sis Chula can whip up the best fruit purees on the island. You learn to
appreciate something like that when baby food comes in only so many varieties, and big people get such a nice range of noms to choose from.
Tucker2001_C04 is her brother. While he's her little brother by age, he's definitely her BIG brother in size. He is a a massive fire lupe, and
ridiculously protective of his
baby sister. Don't ever make her even sniffle, because this Lupe will be on you faster than you can even realize you made a mistake.

even for just a minute.
She loves her big brother. And not only because he has a very cuddly tail.

Being that she spends a lot of time with
Tucker, she has picked up his love of Chias. She's practicing her Chia hunting. For now her targets are just plush
flavored.
