Welcome to Limited Edition Pets, a guide telling the average Neopian how to earn that fabulous pet that they just can't seem to obtain. Yes, this guide was created for you! It was made out of my own love for my favourite limited edition pet, the cybunny. I was constantly asked how I obtained Chii634, since his species isn't actively creatable. I realized that if the information wasn't easily obtainable, then many, many people would go without pets they truly cherished! In an effort to make obtaining a limited edition pet easier, I put this guide together as a personal reference, and a guide for the masses. Please enjoy!
A quick background on LE pets.
Many people, from new and inexperienced, to older and just not in the know, have found themselves in the following classic experience: you see a pet that looks just adorable, think up a great name, go to create one, and oops! that pet isn't available! It's a huge disappointment! Aren't all pets creatable? Sadly, not every pet species is available for immediate creation. While all pets are available for creation at least once, TNT deems certain pets special and cuts off their availability shortly after their initial release. If you want to obtain them, you must save your money, and obtain them via another method. These pets are known as Limited Edition, or Restricted (explained later). They were available once, and are no longer a part of the species that are available for creation on a daily basis. The good thing is, that these pets are obtainable otherwise. They aren't limited edition in the sense that you can't obtain them ever again. You simply have to go through other means!
An Overview of Methods
Morphing Potions
Definition: A Morphing Potion is a magic item that can change any pet into a pet of another species and colour. These potions are made by Kauvara herself and have a variety of species and colors to choose from.
Terms: Morphing Potion, MP
Buyable At: The Magic Shop in Neopia Central, Trading Post, Auction House, Shop Wizard (rare)
Like stated a morphing potion changes your pet into another species and color. When you have obtained a morphing potion go to your inventory and click on it, in the new popup box that has formed click into the drop down menu that shows numerous choices for you to use this item. Choose the pet you want to give the potion to and hit submit. Your pet will then 'drink' the potion and will come out the species and color of the Morphing Potion given to it.
Extra: You must already have a pet to give the potion to. If you don't previously own a pet, you can create one of any regular species. Choose the name and proper gender you want your LE pet to be! And don't forget, you can't use say... a Cybunny Morphing Potion on a Cybunny. It just won't work! If you want to change the colour of an existing limited edition pet, you'll have to paint it.
Transmogrification Potions
Definition: A Transmogrification Potion is a magic item that can change any pet into a pet of another species. Upon transforming your pet will also change color to Mutant. These potions are made by Dr. Sloth and have a variety of species but only one color.
Known As: Transmogrification Potions, Trans Potions, TP
Buyable At: Trading Post, Auction House, Shop Wizard (Rare). It is also possible to obtain a trans potion via a random event where Dr. Sloth hands you one!
Like stated a transmogrification potion changes your pet into another species as well as turning it mutant. When you have obtained a transmogrification potion go to your inventory and click on it, in the new popup box that has formed click into the drop down menu that shows numerous choices for you to use this item. Choose the pet you want to give the potion to and hit enter. Your pet will then 'drink' the potion and will come out the species chosen.
Extra: Like Morphing Potions you must already have a pet to give the potion to. The only difference between transmogrification potions and their better half is that they only have ONE color- mutant. If you do not want a mutant pet, all you have to do is get a basic paint brush (or whatever color you want) and paint your pet at the rainbow pool. Remember, mutant is only a color.
Magical Plushies
Definition: Eep! Did that plushie just wink at you? Most likely! Magical Plushies are a magical plushie infused with the power of transforming action. While the Magical Plushie is just a toy, playing with it could seriously alter your pet! Not all plushies are this powerful, so read the warning label before buying!
Known As: Magical Plushies, that scary thing that won't stop staring.
Buyable At: Plushie Palace in Neopia Central, Trading Post, Auction House, Shop Wizard (rare)
After obtaining your creepy magical toy, go to your inventory and click on it. Once the popup box comes up choose the pet you want to be limited edition and play with it! A good romp in the park with this plushie will leave your friend feeling refreshed and slightly different. By playing with a Magical Plushie your pet becomes the color and species of the plushie played with. Please Note: Like the potions a Magical Plushie must have a pet already created to use it. They are also one use only and will turn into a regular plushie afterwards. See the FAQ section for more details.
Lab Ray
Definition: The Lab Ray is a powerful zapping ray that can change your pet's stats, gender, color, and species. One zap a day is wild fun with that kooky lab ray tech! Enjoy watching your pet change while hoping for a limited edition species!
Known As: Lab Ray, Secret Lab
Buyable at: Trading Post, Auction House, Found by random events, Shop Wizard (piece by piece)
In order to use the secret lab you must obtain all nine pieces of the Secret Laboratory Map. Once you have all the pieces, go here: Click Me! It will show all the pieces you have in the proper order they are, and if you have all nine, give you an option to turn in the map. The reward is about 10k of reimbursement funds, and access to the lab ray! The access is permanent, and you can zap one pet once a day. The pet you choose is up to you, but the results are up to fate.

Mysterious Swirly Potion
Definition: The Mysterious Swirly Potion is an item that when used on your neopet will change it to a random Limited Edition species. If the color is available in that species, it will keep the color your pet already is.
Known As: Mysterious Swirly Potion, MSP
Buyable At: Trading Post, Auction House, Also can be fished up at the Underwater Fishing game once you reach a fishing level of 80+.
Once you have obtained a Mysterious Swirly Potion, you can then go to your inventory and click on it. Choose the pet you want to transform and get the pet to 'drink' it. It will then change to a random Limited Edition species. If the color your pet already was is available in that species, it will stay the same color. If not, it will turn to a basic color.
Example: Pirate Uni gets MSPed and changes species to a Poogle! Pirate is available for Poogles, so you now have a Pirate Poogle. (And yes, you keep those pirate uni clothes too!)
Example Two: Zombie Uni gets MSPed and changes species to a Koi! Zombie is not yet available for Koi, so your pet will now be one of the four basic colours. :(
Creation
Yes, you heard right! You can create Limited Edition pets! While most things limited edition are only released once, sometimes the fine people running Neopets will release a small group of the selected species on their pet days. (Mind you, Draiks and Krawks are never supposed to be released. Only when a glitch occurs (explained below) will they be released!) The only thing you really need to do is know how to successfully get one of these special pets!
The first thing you need to know in order to create a Limited Edition pet is when their special pet days are! While you can look it up easily on the neo calendar, I am providing a list of them right here. (I left out the Krawk and Draik days.)
Chomby Day: March 22nd Cybunny Day: April 27th Hissi Day: May 4th Jetsam Day: October 16th Kiko Day: July 17th Koi Day: May 25th Lutari Day: April 19th Poogle Day: September 19th Tonu Day: February 21st
Once you know the day your wanted pet is going to be released, you can move onto the next step and pick your name! Deciding on a pet name beforehand is very important. You don't want to be rushing around at the last minute and have to use a name that doesn't suit your pet's personality, do you?
Once you have your pet's name ready (I usually create a list of two or more per pet I want to create. Yes, I usually make multiples if space provides.), you must make sure you have space available. This means 3 pets max on your account. You also need to make sure it's the proper day! I want to stress this point, because many people base the day it is, off of the news release. TNT releases the news a day early (sometimes days early for the weekend). If its Poogle day on Sunday, and the Poogle Day News is released on Friday, you will NOT get poogles on Friday! They have calendar dates for a reason. TNT just doesn't work that much on the weekends, thus they don't release a weekend news feed like your local newspaper does.
Once you have space, three pets or less, open up three internet browsers. Or, inside your browser, three tabs. Set your first tab to the Statistics Page. Click Me! You want this page open, because if you scroll down to the bottom of the species and find all the Limited Edition pets, you'll notice a pattern of numbers. It's usually so many numbers, out of so many numbers. Example: Cybunny 323 (323). What does this mean? It means that out of 323 cybunny released, 323 have been created.
Some notes on the stats page: Sadly the statistics page is a bit off, and at the moment, well, slightly glitched. There are pet species that LOOK like they should have some creatable, but there are none. Despite this, on LE pet days, it is a valuable tool that is updated properly for the species in question. Just don't rely on it daily. Oh yeah tonu are creatable nearly every day. Why? Not sure! TNT just loves tonu I suppose!
Back to reality! What we're looking for on the Statistics page is for a number like this: Cybunny 323 (5000). That alerts you that there are cybunnies released! In regards to the glitchy numbers, I'd suggest that the day before, you check the numbers, and write them down. So that you don't get spooked the next day if the number of that species is glitched. Granted, you'll figure it out pretty quick, but being on top of things is nice. :)
Now, second tab. TNT has done us a huge favour with the Create-a-Pet page, by making a separate section for limited pets on the bottom. No more searching! Simply open your second tab to the proper page Click Me! and refresh once you know pets are supposed to be there. It will reload and all will be well! Hey you! Don't attempt to remember how to spell that awkwardly pronounced Japanese name you want to use for your next favourite buddy. In the heat of the moment, vowels WILL get mixed up! So do yourself a favour, and copy and paste. Write out the name somewhere (proper capitols and all) and select it with your mouse. Hit Ctrl and c on your keyboard. Hold down Ctrl, then hit c. Then, in the name box, paste the name using Ctrl and v. :) Hurrah! No more mistakes!
So what about that third tab? Open it to the Pound Chat. Upon pet release, someone, probably many, will create a board about it. If you miss the stats page, then you still have the PC. You can also usually find active release watch threads on most of the boards, and many people have logs of release times as well.
Adoption
Alright, so you've given up your dreams of creating a pet. You've failed at every restock, game, and site event played, and right now, you're feeling a bit sad about the whole thing. But wait! There is another hope! Suddenly the idea of adoption springs back into your mind! Hey, why not right? But after a few hours of surfing the pound, you come to realize that for most limited edition pets, they're a difficult commodity to find. So what to do?
Adoption is one of my favourite ways of obtaining pets. I'm a fan of applications (-watches a few people leave-) and in the past one of my favourite things to do was to put my all into creating the -perfect- application! Today however, anything beyond a small essay is deemed as your-choice only, and is not allowed to be required by pet owners. While trading has taken over a lot of the adoption realm, many people still put their pets up for adoption, and those people either choose to accept a neomail app, or just accept a few mails from interested parties.
In today's adoption world, it seems that what is truly acceptable is just as difficult a line to walk as it used to be. There are tons of questions, like, can you ask to seek a specific pet ufa? What's taboo? What's unacceptable? To be honest, I've gotten a little out of touch myself, but here are some things I can tell you for sure...
-It's far better to ask for some adoption agency listings, than to put a board on the PC entitled: Seeking to Adopt Silver Cybunny! Peruse the board first, see if there are any pets ufa you want to apply for, and then put up that you are seeking some agencies.
-Never demand any pet. Remember, the pet is the other persons property until it goes to another home. They don't have to give you anything.
-Read! Most people don't read the intro post of a thread. The intro post is where most of the info goes, and if you don't read it, you're probably going to miss some important points. So please, please read what they say. Make sure they're finished posting all their info before asking questions, or making an inquiry on their pet.
-Do what they say. If you're interested in their pet, and they want you to tell you why want their pet, do so! You have to have a reason! It's not a difficult task to share that, is it? Some people just want to know you a little better, and if that's too much to ask, then you should be creating the pet yourself. Granted, some people put a few too many hoops to jump through. It's not unreasonable to tell them a few well-written sentences about yourself. But if it gets to the point where you see the 'process' is getting unfair, back out. Some people DO put pets ufa for the attention, and I'd avoid them at all costs if possible.
Always remember that if you're adopting, you're getting a free pet. If you're going after that pet just because you want to show it off because it seems rare, then you're going after it for the wrong reason. Trophies can be bought. Think about that.
A Note: Young accounts under the age of four months are unable to adopt limited edition pet species. Why? TNT's rules! If your account is that young, you can spend those four months working on your skills so that maybe you'll be able to morph your own pet! I'm sure you'll get good at something!
Agency Listings
Want to adopt a limited edition pet? Here are some agencies that cater specifically to these wonderful neopets!
Trading
As much as I dislike the idea of trading, with the release of the safe-transfer system with the new pound up, trading has become a popular activity for those looking to get the pets they desire. To trade a pet, you must have both in and out open safe-transfers, and strike a deal with another Neopian. Once you have agreed on what pets you wish to trade, you bid your pet on theirs, and the pets are safely exchanged. There are many feelings on pet trading, mostly surrounding the fact that while pets aren't objects, they do have trade 'value'. When searching for a limited edition pet, be aware that there are people that are out to scam others, so tread carefully. I am afraid that my knowledge of the trading 'game' isn't much more than a basic understanding, but here are a few tips.
-Safe transfer is the only method of moving pets you should use when trading pets. You can guarantee that both pets arrive safely!
-Make sure that you are fully comfortable with the trade before you agree to it. If you're iffy, then don't go through with it.
-Browse the Pound Chat a bit, and if you aren't sure about a trade, put a thread up inquiring for opinions or aid.
-The most important person to please is you. If the trade makes you happy, and you understand all points around it, then go for it!
A Note: Trading works the same as adoption. Safe-transfer can't bring a limited edition pet species to your account if it's under four months.
By Species
How To Use: In this section of the guide I look at each pet species in alphabetical order, and list all the methods of morphing and transforming available for each specific species. Each pet comes in many colours, but not every pet has a morphing potion/plushie for that colour. If it does though, it may be a cheap alternative to buying the mp and pb separate! A pirate pet mp may be cheaper than the paint brush and pet potion together, so compare before purchase. You might save a few million!
Beneath each pet you'll receive some facts, and all the currently available methods for obtaining it that are specific to that species. Hover your mouse over the image to bring up the name! (It also appears on your status bar!) Bordered images mean they have been announced, but as of yet, not truly released into the system.

If you want to hatch a draik this way (which creates a new pet) then you need a draik egg, a name picked out, and at least one open space on your account. Once you are ready, go to the Draik Nest and follow the instructions.

Creation? Yes, like the draik there is a way you can actively create a krawk. While the krawk is a pet species, it is also a petpet species. Krawk petpets are considered 'baby krawks', and once they grow up, turn into the regular large krawks you see roaming around pestering users today. To create a krawk, you need to have at least one pet space available. Attach the krawk to your active pet, and give it a name. The name should be untaken, and the name you want your krawk to be. Then, take that pet and go to the Fungus Cave. Let your krawk petpet each some fungus, and POOF! it will grow.
Tip! Have your eye on a beautiful Faerie Krawk? Or another expensive color? Do yourself a favor and buy the petpet paint brush in the color you want your neopet krawk to be! Paint your Krawk while still in the petpet form and enjoy a cheaper way to get that expensive colored neopet. The Krawk petpet will turn into whatever color neopet the petpet was painted. It's not available to do with all pet colours, but you could save yourself significant money if you can.

Species: Lutari
Colours Available: 10
How To? The lutari is a special species in that there are only three ways to obtain them: creation, lab ray, neopets mobile. Sadly, neopets mobile seems to be no longer available. More and more Neopians are noting that the service has poofed. So it seems that there are only two ways! When I say two, I mean two! You can't adopt or trade for these pets! They aren't transferable and once dumped in the pound they 'run away' to an account full of lutari. (Can you imagine the lodge bill?!) It seems that owning a lutari is a destined privilege! In 2009 lutari were released again via the create-a-pet page. It was the only time it had been done since their release. What does this tell us? Not a heck of a lot! One can assume however that with the loss of neopets mobile, TNT may start releasing lutari more actively.

Species: Tonu

Transmogrification:

On Tonu: So, there have been some strange arguements in the past that the Tonu is not a limited edition pet. This isn't true. The Tonu is indeed a limited edition pet. Why the questioning? Well, Tonu are released quite often. Some say its when the giant omelette disappears, other say they've been released while the omelette is still available. Regardless, they are released almost daily, so the cheapest way for you to obtain one is to simply create one when they're released regularly.
Restricted Titles & the Grundo Clan
Ah yes, the title known as 'Restricted'. Some pets are classed as Restricted, rather than Limited Edition. Krawks, Draiks, and Grundos fall into this category, and it is possible that Lutari do as well. What does it all mean? Restricted pets ARE Limited Edition, but the different there lies in the fact that while regular LE pets are still released, Restricted pets are no longer creatable by the Create-A-Pet. They're meant to never be released as creatable again. So then, what about the humble Grundo? Grundos are creatable every single day of the year, but not by the regular method. If you go over to the Virtupets Space Station, you'll find a place to 'adopt' a grundo. Adopt One Today! Another sign that they aren't LE pets, is that they are adoptable by accounts under four months old via the pound. :) Grundos are simply just regular pets, who have had their creation method affected by a former plot.
09-09-09
A lot of peoples still fuss and talk about the 2009 Draik Day, and there is good reason. Someone from TNT forgot to flip the switch that said 'no release', and a few Draiks escaped from the Create-A-Pet page! Those who created them got to keep them, and while there are mixed feelings about the Draiks overall, it still happened. Will it happen again? Not if TNT has anything to do with it! They stated in an Editorial that it was a big mistake. Want to know more? This petpage is dedicated to it... 9-9-9 Day of the Draiks
Cheapest Method
I considered long and hard about pricing guides, and I decided that with well over a hundred items to log, it would be a major time killer for me to update a pricing guide weekly. I finally decided that for now, I will only serve up the cheapest method to obtain the species. If you're looking for a price on a specific mp, I'd suggest shopping around and asking some big resellers. They usually know their way around the market and can give you a good ballpark. Please do not trust item database sites. Many aren't kept properly up to date and some allow users to edit prices. I know people that have been scammed through depending on those sites for price references. Stick to the TP and current user information! These prices are updated weekly, and are estimates of the lowest prices I see on the TP.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you get a Draik/Krawk from the lab ray?
I have heard of Draiks being gained by the ray, but not Krawks. Whether they still can or not, that has yet to be seen.
Where can you buy the plushies and potions listed on here?
You can find them on the trading post or in the auction house. You can also sometimes get lucky and snipe them for a cheap price off the shop wizard. Plushies and potions (not transmogrification potions) are also restockable in their respectable shops. All plushies can be restocked here: Plushie Palace. Morphing Potions can be restocked here: Kauvara's Magic Shop. The poogle plushies are actually toys, and may or may not restock. Once I find confirmation of this, I will update this question.
What exactly does 'k' mean?
Ah, 'k' refers to one thousand. Example: 1k=1000nps. If I have a price stated such as 900 - 1.2 million it means 900k (or 900,000) to 1.2 million nps (or 1,200,000).
Do you have a potion or a pet? Can I have it?
If I did have a potion I would either use it for myself, or sell it for a profit.
Are magical plushies one use only? (~toffeedatepudding)
Magical plushies are one use only items just like morphing potions and trans potions. When you play with your pet, your pet will turn the species and colour of that plushie. HOWEVER - you WILL receive a non-magical plushie in the end! Yes, it's a toy and a transforming item too! Example: You use a Magical Yellow Cybunny Plushie on your lupe. Your lupe would turn into a yellow cybunny, and a Yellow Cybunny Plushie would be left in your inventory! Depending on the colour/rarity, you could receive a nice bit of pocket change back if you sell the regular plushie. ^^ Or, just have a cute toy to add to your collection!
Do you have to be 4 months to CREATE a LE or just to adopt it? -esleyoga
You can create limited editon pets at any account age! The four month rule only applies to adoption.
