All Eyes On Moltara As Altador Cup Approaches

May 2010 | In the days just before the start of the Altador Cup, it seems that the big story everyone's talking about is the inclusion of a team from Neopia's newest land, Moltara, in this year's tournament. In the months since their land's discovery late last year, Moltarans have been tirelessly making preparations to field a team in this year's tournament. "It's certainly been a challenge, putting together a team that Moltarans can be proud of in such a short period of time," said team captain Aldric Beign.

As for Moltara's prospects on the playing field, there seems to be a guarded sense of optimism about the team's outlook. "They're a spirited bunch with lots of potential," one sideline observer noted during a recent practice. "It's plain, however, that they've lots to learn before anyone considers them a championship contender."

While even the team's most ardent supporters would concede that they're raw and untested, there are those who believe the tournament's month-long plus Double Round Robin phase should provide a steep enough learning curve. "Certainly, they're going to take their lumps," one Moltara supporter admitted, "but with all the natural ability this team has, you can't tell me they won't be right there battling to win it all at the end."

An Extra Spring in Their Step

May 2011 | Yooyuball teams are always on the lookout for a way to get a leg up on their competition, and the team from Moltara may have found one! "Tangor approached us recently about making some gear for the team," said Mor Gollog. "There was talk of spring-loaded slings and even a steam-powered jetpack. In the end, though, we decided it was best to rely on our own natural abilities. Having our loyal fans cheer us on is the greatest advantage we can have!"

Summer is right around the corner, and every Neopian knows what that means: the Altador Cup is nearly here! However, this also means your well-earned prize shop points from last year will be reset to facilitate the newcomers to Altador Cup VI. If you still have any left over, this is a guide to what you should get when you cash in your points!

What first?

To start, don't just splurge willy-nilly. These points are non-refundable, and you won't get a second chance to purchase these exclusive items. What you need to do is research. Yes, this is time-consuming, and yes, this could take you an hour each at the trading post, shop wizard and the boards, but you need to get the most for your money. Neopoints can be earned back through restocking, games, random events, etc. but the prize shop has limited spending – you should make the most of it.

Any tips?

There are certain types of items that are more expensive and/or more coveted, whether in the AC prize shop, the Daily Dare, or at the end of a plot. Here are the most recommended items you should be spending on, ranked from lowest to highest:

10. Food: The wise Neopian is already booked at the Neolodge, or feeding his or her pet a wide variety of Gross Foods and omelets. With no need for food, a lot is on the Shop Wizard before you know it.

9. Gifts: Most people don't have a use for these items, so they automatically resell. However, if everyone is reselling, no one is buying. If you really want one or need it for your gallery, just buy it with Neopoints; they're probably pretty cheap anyway, especially in the first month of release.

8. Toys: Save for the users who really believe their pets need toys to be happy (I still remember when I was like that myself), toys are put up on the market and no one buys. This is most certainly a strictly Neopoint-buyable item if you want to be a smart spender.

7. Plushies: Though on a similar level to toys, plushies are just so cute, and there are a lot of avid plushie collectors.

6. Neohome: Neohome items are popular for their value in the Neohome customization demographics; but, if a lot of users don't use their Neohomes (like me), the items don't have a lot of value.

5. Stamps: Stamps are widely collected by stamp and avatar aficionados, so they quickly rise in value.

4. Wearables: Customization is widely popular throughout the Neopian community, and rare wearables are very much desired. If you want a prize shop wearable, though, try it on at Dress to Impress to make sure your pet suits it!

3. Petpets: Typically, prize shop Petpets are either 1. Very rare and very expensive, or 2. Exclusive to the prize shop. Petpets are purchased usually because they suit the user's Neopet, so if you think you'd want that Petpet later you should probably get one before you run out of points.

2. Books: Books will always be huge prize shop winners. Everyone wants the smartest pet in Neopia, everyone wants that book award. The only catch is that, once you use a book, it disappears forever. Thus, books quickly climb in price. If you think you'd pursue that book award later, stock up on those books (with Neopoints, if you can, and quickly). (If you do plan on using Neopoints to buy prize shop items, the best thing to do is to wait a little after their release, maybe a week – too soon and they're so expensive because they're the first in Neopia, too late and the price would have gone through the roof because there's nearly none left.)

1. Paint brushes: Of course, the most wanted by any Neopian – gorgeous paint brushes. The bad part about brushes is that they're already pricey enough before the plot, but on the bright side, the new brushes in Neopia actually make the prices deflate. If you've ever wanted to paint your pet a fancy new color, wait until Neopia's had a taste of the prize shop before setting out on a paint brush bargain hunt.

I want to restock! But, I only have…

Not to worry! If you want to restock, especially if you only have a few measly points (which you'll change this year, right?), it's very simple. If you weigh the prizes with each other, you'd find that, for the same amount of points, a number of any one cheap prize can be more high-priced than one higher-costing item. Thus, you can spend only a few points restocking some of the lower items to make a profit! (After all, all of these items will be retired, so their price is bound to go up, no matter what type of item it is.) But don't forget the list I made above; if you're going to restock anything, go for books and wearables first, not food.

What now?

Once you have your lovely Altador Cup merchandise, why not create a lovely gallery (or a section in your gallery) for it? Perhaps you could sell some for a profit. My advice? What I think you should do is store some items in your Safety Deposit Box; once the prize shop is cleared, the items are retired and cannot be recreated. As users quit for good, delete items or just forget about them, and new collectors join Neopets, the items will be in higher demand, lower supply. This boosts the price up, creating potentially expensive products. I'd wait about 6 months or more for this effect to kick in, though. So: just store and wait!
