A (mis)fortune of Parafortuna
Parafortuna's are a species of parasite that pride themselves on elitism and perfectionism. From their physical features to their luck-changing achievements, the Parafortuna's livelihood revolves around the successful gleam of accomplishment.Everything that Calistoe struggles with...
It's not that he's incapable because he's as strong and beautiful as the rest, but instead, Calistoe is quite unluckily inept. "Awkward" does not begin to explain his history of encountering unfortunate events that could only be explained when you're cursed with the "unlucky". Somehow, it's ironic that Parafortuna's are generally born luck-neutral, yet for Calistoe's poor sake, he seems to be incredibly luck-filled (full of bad luck, that is).
Through the years of disappointment and a series of peculiar events resulting in becoming a complete failure as a Parafortuna, Calistoe has resorted to covering his face in a paper-bag in an effort to hide his face in shame.
The paper-bag
It started as a joke when one of his peers bullied him into wearing it in front of the whole class. However, Calistoe began to make a habit of putting on the paper-bag whenever he felt scared, nervous, or embarrassed. Somehow it gave him a small hint of comfort like a shell encasing his insecurities. There isn't a place Calistoe won't go without his paper-bag. It's quite a concern for his parents and everyone else who has to walk with him in public. :cDespite the bag's origins as a symbol of his embarrassment, Calistoe also began to regard it as his bad luck breaking charm. Whenever something happens where bad luck befalls him, Calistoe will wear the bag or at least hold it in his possession until the incident is over. Whenever a situation has blown over, Calistoe then says, "It could have been worse without my paper-bag," ending on a rather positive note thanking a seemingly worthless (luckless) head accessory.
That being said, Calistoe isn't necessarily a gloomy being despite his hardships. In fact, he remains fairly positive for someone who finds himself often in a state of challenging circumstances. Perhaps his bad luck has taught him wisdom more valuable than all the successes the Parafortuna species could ever give him... the knowledge of humility and positive-thinking in the face of adversary.
