~Calef~

You are walking down a heavily forested trail, the sun is at its peak and the temperature is high. Why did I decide to go for a hike now? You wonder. Spying a few rocks up ahead, you decide to take a rest there. Sitting down with a sigh, you take a drink from your water bottle. You suddenly realize how tired you actually are as you lean back on a large rock behind you. You let it get the better of you and close your eyes and soon fall into a dreamless sleep. You wake up what seems to you a few minutes later, but is actually hours. Startled at the realization that you had slept for so long you decide to walk down the path in the opposite direction you were heading in earlier. Nothing is out of the ordinary until you spot a large blue figure walking across the path ahead of you. You follow the figure as your curiosity has taken over you. When you finally spot it again, you see that it is a Lupe. You take a step back in fear wondering if it has noticed you and freeze. The Lupe lifts its head and sniffs the air, then to your horror, it turns and looks straight at you. Its ears pin back and a growl emanates from its chest. After staring at you for a few seconds; it realizes you are not going to hurt it. The Lupe's features relax and it walks over to you. "I'm sorry for giving you such a scare," he, you can tell from his voice, says. "Please forgive me." The fear clawing at your chest now suddenly leaves. You sigh in relief and manage to choke out, "I do." The Lupe smiles and his deep green eyes soften. "My name is Calef," he states. "What might yours be?" he asks, curious. "guest," you tell him. Calef looks past you and sees that you have left the trail far behind. "Well, guest, it seems you have become lost following me," he says. You spin around to see that the trail is nowhere in sight. Noticing the look on your face, Calef says, "Do not worry, I shall lead you back to the path. But before I do, would you like to know more about me?" he asks. You nod your head and thank him for his kindness. Calef smiles again and sits down. "Then I shall begin now."

One of the first things you may notice about me is that I am a lone Lupe," he starts. "Things were not always this way for me. When I was a young pup I belonged to a large pack. My mother and father were the Alpha's, so my siblings and I were never left by ourselves. Life was great; we were well fed and played constantly. Little did we know, but our play was helping us develop vital skills for our future. Life like this continued until I was about seven months old.

One day, while most of the pack was out hunting, my siblings and I ran off for a classic game of hide-and-seek. The Lupe guarding us watched us sleepily as my two sisters and I ran to hide. As I dove into some bushes I heard my brother call out that we better be ready. I nearly held my breath as I heard him race past my hiding place. 'Gotcha!' I heard him call, as well as a giggle from one of my sisters. That just left myself and Annie. Being a confident pup I had no doubt in my mind that I would win. Dry leaves crunching under their paws, my brother and sister began their search for us. I made sure to stay quiet as a mouse whenever they passed my bush. A sudden squeal followed by laughter suggested that Annie had been caught. Grinning triumphantly, I stood up and began to walk out of the bush. That was until I heard the most fear-filled scream of my life, quickly succeeded by fierce barking and growling. I froze in place; my eyes were widened in shock and fear. My muscles began to tremble as I heard more barking and the snapping of jaws. 'Kids, run!' Our guard shouted as he was tackled and brought down by another Lupe. Only now did I dare try to see what was happening. Making sure I would not be seen, I peered through the bushes leaves to see my siblings dashing away, and our guard being killed. I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound came out. Our guard's killer grinned maliciously and ordered the rest of his pack to follow my siblings. I recognized him instantly by the scar across his right eye. He was none other than the alpha male of my pack's long time rivals. My eyes shut tight as I cowered in the bush. The rest of my pack's rivals pounded across the forest floor.

Many long minutes passed before I dared to venture out. I quietly walked over to the dead guard. Hot tears burned in my eyes at the sight of his terribly blood-stained orange fur. I sat there for a few seconds as tears streamed down my face. Finally, I stood up and followed the paw prints on the soft earth. 'Mother! Father!' I called. I started trotting along the trail. 'Annie, Charm, Connal!' I yelled desperately for my siblings. I suddenly gasped at the sight before my eyes. 'No!' I screamed as I raced toward two motionless figures lying on the forest floor. I sobbed at the sight. There they were, Charm and Connal, dead surely by our rival pack. I looked ahead to see another small figure, its yellow fur was quite matted. Annie did not get much farther before meeting the same fate as Charm and Connal. I stood slowly and walked to her. I nudged her side, but she did not wake. Closing my eyes tightly for a second, I continued my search for the rest of my pack, occasionally calling out for my parents.

I had been searching for them for at least three days before I finally, and regretfully gave up. I was terribly hungry and needed food as fast as possible. My parents and the rest of the pack had taken my siblings and I on hunting trips a few times before, so I relatively knew what I was doing. I lifted my nose and sniffed the air for prey. I sighed and lay down, scenting none. Being very weary, I soon succumbed to sleep. The sound of pawsteps woke me what seemed several minutes later. I opened my eyes drowsily to see a shadow Lupe standing in front of me and looking down at me. 'Father?' I asked, still half asleep. Then his scent came to me and I realized he was not who I thought he was. I was on my feet in an instant. 'You're not my father!' I growled. 'Go away!' 'Now, now, little pup,' the Lupe said. 'I'm not here to hurt you, but to help you.' He motioned to a rabbit I had not spotted. 'You look like you have not eaten for a while now, so I caught that for you. My name is Rahn, by the way.' He added. 'Calef,' I grumbled, walking over to the rabbit. Rahn followed me. 'Tell me, why are you out here all alone Calef?' He asked. 'I don't want to talk about it,' I said after swallowing a bite. 'Fair enough,' Rahn replied. 'How would you like to stay with me?' He suggested. I looked up at him suspiciously. 'You're not going to hurt me, are you?' I asked. 'Of course not,' the older Lupe replied. I considered his offer while I ate. True, I had no idea who he was, but he had shown me nothing but kindness. My mind was made up as I finished off the last part of the rabbit. 'Alright,' I said. 'I'll stay with you.' Rahn smiled kindly. 'Good,' he said. 'Don't take any offence, but I don't think you would have survived without an adult.'

Over time, I had grown quite close to Rahn. He was like a second father to me, having taught me how to hunt and how to survive through harsh winters. I had also eventually told him how I came to be alone. We never talked about it much, as it was a painful subject to discuss. A little over a year had passed since he found me when we were sleeping one day, mildly covered by ferns and bushes. I woke up to see the old Lupe snoring quietly beside me. I figured I would go hunting and surprise him when I got back; it would also show off my skills from the experienced mentor that he was. Smiling, I walked away quietly in search for prey.

Several minutes had passed when I was walking back proudly with two rabbits hanging from my jaws. Only a few feet away now, the scent of blood in the air grew stronger. I stopped for a second, puzzled. I dropped the rabbits when I realized what must have happened. I ran through the underbrush to find Rahn lying on the ground. He was clearly no longer sleeping. His breath was coming in shallow gasps as I approached him. 'Rahn, Rahn who did this to you?' I asked, horrified. Rahn cringed and opened his eyes. 'Calef?' He asked. 'Yes, it's me.' I replied. 'Thank goodness you are safe. Calef, they were looking for you.'
They who?'
The Lupe's that attacked me. One was a dark red color with a scar across his right eye.' Rahn clarified.
I growled lowly. 'Him again!' I shouted. 'I swear, one day I'll set things straight. For you, and for the rest of my family.' Rahn coughed and grimaced in pain. 'Calef,' he said to me. 'Calef, promise me you will stay safe. You must leave here; my time is over. I fear if you don't go now, they will find you.' 'Rahn, I can't leave you by yourself.' I protested. 'You must,' he whispered. 'Go. Now.' And he was gone. Angry tears gathering in my eyes, I turned and walked away from the Lupe who I considered close enough to be my father.

Now a few years have passed. I have been roaming the lands alone, never have I seen another Lupe since then. It is like the alpha of my old pack's rival pack has faded into nothing but a bad dream. Though I will never forget what he has done. I travel here now in search for a terra to call my own. But occasionally I have caught scent of a female Lupe, and I wonder if she would be kind enough to share her terra with me." Calef sighs and looks up to the sky, then back down to you. "I am sorry for having kept you from your journey home for so long." You tell him all is fine and that you were glad to have heard his story. Calef smiles and says, "Well then, I suppose now is the time to lead you back to the trail." He stands and begins to walk through the forest. You follow him and before too long you arrive at the trail. "Farewell, guest. It was nice to have met you." You tell him goodbye and wave to him once as you begin your walk back home.
