Hey, guest! You wanna know how to get rich? You've come to the right place.
I became a Neo-Millionare in about a month and a half - and you can too. It's so simple. There's no need for begging, cheating, or scamming either! Read on!
Just Getting Started.
First things first: your pets. You're gonna have to feed those guys, you know, and you only get two items a day free to do it with (the free omelette in Tyrannia and the free Jelly in Jelly World - just add /jelly to the end of the neopets.com address!) So the thing is, don't adopt more pets than you can handle. Or, if you do, the Neopian Lodge is a nifty little trick. For just 5np, they'll play and feed your pet, and bloat him up - he won't need feeding again until he's hungry.
So we've taken care of the pets, and feeding problem - but wait, you say your pet wants a petpet? No, he doesn't. The road the richness, quite frankly, is sacrifice. This means nothing 'extra.' Maybe get a small toy and grooming item to keep your pet happy - but I would advise against petpets (unless very cheap, such as a Selket or an Abominable Snowball) no pet painting, and no quests. Also, don't buy medicine for your pets; many of them are expensive, even for someone like me. Take em to the Healing Springs in Faerieland. It may taken time, but pets can't die, so they'll eventually be cured.
Also, know your extras. In Terror Mountain, the Snowager gives out free items when he's sleeping; you can buy scratchcards and sell them for inflated prices. In Neopia Central, the Wishing Well may grant your wish (though probably not ;)). I don't spin the wheel in the Haunted Woods, but you may do so if you like; but be aware, you may get any item in your inventory stolen by the Pant Devil or turned into sludge. The Lost Desert has the Shrine of Coltzan and the Fruit Machine. Tyrannia has the Wheel of Mediocrity and the Free Omelette. Meridell has Grumpy Old King. Faerieland has the Healing Springs and the Wheel of Excitement. Finally, Mystery Island has Tombola!
The best advice I can give to any newbie is to join a fansite. pinkpt.com, nothingbutneopets.com and neoitems.net are all great fansites. I, personally, recommend PinkPT.com, AKA Pink Poogle Toy, AKA PPT-blocked- their forums. The users there have a wealth of knowledge. Lurk, listen, learn.
I'm Not a Newbie. I Just Want to Get Rich! What Do I Do?
Alright, calm down there. :) I know it sounds cliched, but playing games is the absolute foundation for any user. If you can't play games, or if your computer is slow, get to a public library, cafe, school...something. Trust me, you won't have to play games for very long - I sure don't play em for NP anymore.
Find some games you're good at; the ones that will give you 1000np per go, the maximum you can get. For me, these games are Pterattack, Igloo Garage Sale game, and Magax: Destroyer, among others. You will be good on at least one game on the site. Trust me. In the beginning, play as much as possible. Earn at least 10,000np per day - 10 games with a max score. Save your money. Save ALL your money. Remember what I told you about pet feeding and frivolous buying. Don't do it; keep your money in the bank, where it will earn interest and keep you from spending it! By the end of the week, you should have around 50,000np. And that's where we'll start.
A Good Foundation: 50,000np or More.
So, you've got 50k (50,000np.) Now, you see those shops you've been ignoring for a week? Now's the time to go into them. Familiarize yourself with em, and the best ones to restock at. I must warn you, before you go on, that this is so time consuming. I spend about 4 hours a day on Neopets. Be prepared to spend at least an hour and a half.
Also, please know that the 'Estimated Value,' of any item which comes up when you click on an item is not their sell value. For instance, Blue Poogle Toys are estimated at 330np but sell for just 30np. Similarly, Hand Painted Scarabs are Estimated at around 5,000np (correct me if I'm wrong) but they sell for over 50,000np! It's a big difference. The Shop Wizard is your friend.
So, let's take the Fresh Smoothies shop in Neopia Central. There may or may not be items in there, but let's say when you stop buy there are Mega Melman Smoothies for sale. They are selling for about 574np in the shop. Now, look on the Shop Wiz. Mega Melman Smoothies are selling in people's shops for 615np! As you can see, if you buy this item from the shop, even at it's maximum price of 574np, you will still make a profit. But, with haggling, you'll be able to get the price down even more for more profit!
Similarly, check out a Small Super Lemon Grape Smoothie. They sell in the shops for about 326np, but when you check the Shop Wiz, they're only selling for 289np. This is a bad buy for you to make; as you can see, you'll make no profit reselling the Small Super Lemon Grape Smoothie. Unless you know an item to be rare, and you'll eventually come to know this as you become more familiar with the shops, do not buy it without consulting the Shop Wiz first!
But, these NP numbers that I have just told you will not always be correct. Neopian inflation and deflation are a tricky thing. For instance, Hand Painted Scarabs used to sell for about 100,000np, but they are now going for just a little less than 60,000np. Similarly, a whole Secret Laboratory Map set used to cost about 90,000np, but now costs over 250,000. To the buyer and seller like you are, Neopian inflation and deflation is important!
AAAAAND...You're Rich!
Now isn't the simple? Here's the deal : that's all there is to it. Really. You'll start out with smaller profits, but eventually you'll be able to buy more expensive items and resell them. Other player's Shops are also your friends! Just employ the same principal. If someone is selling a 200np item for 100np, buy the 100np item and re-sell for 195np! If the item is VERY expensive, you'll have to check the Shop Wiz more than once; I recommend 3 times for the 10k-25k items and five or more for the more expensive, because the Wiz runs through different letters of the alphabet every time it searches. Now, you can take your pets out of the Lodge, feed them good food (even gourmet food!) Start a gallery, buy a Lab Map, paint your pets, give them nice petpets - all things which I have done, and you can too. It just takes time, patience, and a knowhow of the economy. And trust me, if I can do this, anyone can.
Extra Shop Tips - AKA My Philosophy On Buying
It's always best to get your own philosophy on buying. But, generally, I follow these rules when encountering player's shops.
1) If the user has a large amount of items, you'll have to buy them all if you want to resell them at a higher price; otherwise, why would people buy from you, instead of the person with 25 of the same items selling 50np cheaper? If a person has over 5 1-999np items, more than 3 1,000-1,999 items, more than 2 2,000-10,000items or more than one item of anything 10,000np or more, don't buy. Trust me. You don't want to be stuck buying two 40,000np items just so you can resell at a higher price. That's a major blow to your budget.
2) There are very few times when the always search the shop wizard rule before buying doesn't apply. This involves codestones, faeries, and to a limited extent, dubloons. If you see a codestone or faerie for under 100np than everyone is selling, grab it up! It won't be there long. Faeries and codestones sell like hotcakes!
3) If you're investing your money into an item just released, re-sell it immediately instead of letting it sit in your Safety Deposit Box! When it's a new item, it will of course be expensive, but as more are put into Neopia, the price drops and drops. I made the mistake of buying a Love Shake Chocolate when it first came out for 40,000np. It was resold for 15,000np. Learn from my mistakes!
4) The Safety Deposit Box (SDB) is your friend! You can store unlimited items there and they're safe from thieves! Always have a decent supply of goods, and be ready to restock your shop. The more times you restock, the more money you pull in.
Now You're Rich! ...But Keep It Safe.
Many things can get your account frozen, including unknowingly violating the Terms of Service (TOS) and getting scammed. Please read on for tips. Even if you're a savvy player already (and you should be, if you're going to fan sites like I told you!) it never hurts for a memory refresher!
Rule Breaking!
A lot of people get their accounts iced because of breaking simple rules. Most people just get a warning...but, if done repeatedly, or if severe enough the first time, it will result in all your hard work down the drain. Check out these little-known (and/or much ignored) Neopian rules.
1) The Chat Room. It's a dangerous place. I highly advise not ever going into the chats, unless you plan to lurk. The more you post, the higher the chance it is you're going to break a rule and get frozen. Improper freezings have been known to take place just for saying something innocent on the chat boards! Quite frankly, the lower the profile you have, the better. So many things are filtered by Neopets - ridiculous words! Nevertheless, you shouldn't try and test the swear filter; you shouldn't ask for dates either for you or for your Neopets; and finally, just remember this is a kid's site. No inappropriate content.
2) Running an Adoption Agency is NO LONGER against the rules! However, you must be very careful that you are not charging a fee for the pet, as this is freezable. You can't charge money for anything on this site: anything from selling a pet, to selling artwork or HTML. It's all illegal.
3) Shop contests. It's a no-no, folks. And it doesn't matter if it is legit, it's still illegal. Quite simply, shop contests are, 'the person who buys the most wins a prize.' Or, 'one random buyer per week will receive a prize.' MOST of these aren't true, they're only scams to con people out of their money. And even if you have full intentions on going through with the promise, I personally report first and ask questions later, just like most people. Illegal = don't do it.
3) Chain letters. Either posting on the Trading Post or the chat boards, 'post this in ten lots/boards and find NP/paint brush' is NOT true, NONE of them are true, the only thing they do is slow down the server and anger honest Neopians. Plus, it's against the rules. I *know* I report these guys. Neomail forwarding is also rule-breaking...by that, I mean one of those typical, 'send this to 15 people and you'll have good luck!' type deals. Similar, and similarly illegal.
4) Extra accounts. While they're not, on the surface, illegal, it's what you do with these extra accounts that will decide it. Quite simply, if you play Meerca Chase on your main account for NP, you can't do it on your second account. And no, no, no receiving any of the Extras I described above on your second account!
I'm Not Doing Any of That. Am I Safe?
Sadly, no. Scams are becoming more and more common, and as scammers get more intelligent (isn't that an oxymoron) so you must evolve with them.
1) First things first - fake login pages. NEVER log into any page that doesn't start with Neopets.com. If a really sweet deal comes along in a shop and when you click on it, it takes you to a Neopets log in page, check the address! 95% chance, it's a scam. Similarly, you can roll your mouse over the item and if it doesn't say something like neopets.com/buy_item....etc etc, it's not from Neopets. Be aware! Neopets has put in a lot more safeguards in shops since I first started, but it's still a good idea to be cautious.
2) Neositting. Don't offer your services, and don't take up anyone else's offer. Remember the Neopian Lodge we talked about earlier? You can put your pet in there and he will be happy and played with! Plus, they send you neat little e-mails when they get out of the lodge ;-) Neositting is against Neopets' TOS. 99%, nothing good will come of it.
3) I just found a great website that gave me lots of NP! ...No, they didn't. Quite frankly, giving out Neopoints through a third-party service is completely not possible. Chances are, you'll go to a fake login page. And we all know what to do (well, NOT to do) with them, right? However, some web pages are much more malicious. Please read this, if nothing else : There is a cookie grabbing program, which is nothing new, but nevertheless pretty dangerous. This is just about the only true meaning of HACKED. Most everyone who loses their account are scammed, but cookie grabbers take your cookies and not only get into your Neopets account, but ALL your accounts. Please be aware of this. Never go to any third-party site you don't implicitly trust!
4) No one on the Neopets team will eeeeeeeever ask for your p_w (this word is blocked, but I think we all get the jist, right?) So, if anyone neomails or e-mails you about your p_w, it's a total scam. Think about it: Neopets already has your p_w, they don't need it! If the Neomail doesn't come from theneopetsteam, it's not really staff. Plus, you can't respond to the neopetsteam anyway! :D Also, you will never need to 'back up' your account or send a neomail to 15 people in order to keep your account. The first is a scam and the second is a chain letter, both annoying. Your account is yours forever; if you check out some of the older accounts, some people never logged in after their first day, and their accounts are still safe and sound.
5) Back to the chat board warning: this is where you will see many scams! Posting to outside sites (either cookie grabbers or fake login pages) or attempting to sell 'secrets' through AIM. Just as a note, if you Directly Connect with anyone through AIM, they have the power to take over your account; don't do this with anyone you don't trust. Also, another common chat ploy is 'look what Neopets did for your security! If you post your p_w, it comes out in stars!' It doesn't.
6) Never buy overpriced items to get entered in a contest or in exchange for information. Just for the record, there is no 'Secret Faerie Cave' or 'Dark Faerie Cave' or whatever that a faerie pays you to go away. If you've been lurking about fansites, you'll know this to be the truth. You can find allsecret" info about the site just by asking! Don't pay outrageous prices. Also, this is why shop contests are banned - people were (and still are) paying 300np† for Palm Fans and Tombola Junk to be entered into non-existant contests.
7) Don't ever change your e-mail to anyone else's. For instance, say you change your e-mail to hi@aol.com (made up address). The person who's e-mail is hi@aol.com can then use the 'Recover P_W' option, and your p_w will be sent to hi@aol.com!
8) You want to trade, but your trading partner claims either the Trading Post doesn't work for them, or they're banned from it? They're LYING! The Trading Post is not a 'program,' so if Neopets works for them the Trading Post (TP from now on) will too. Also, people can get neomail banned and restock banned, but not TP banned. If someone wants to trade not using the TP, it's 99.999% a scam. You'll lose your item. After all, what's to say when you've sent your item, they'll send theirs? And Neopets can't do anything about it. And, this brings us into our next line of scammers.
Trading Post Scams!
First, the Trading Post, or TP, is a wonderful place to get acquainted with. It's the only place you can sell items worth over 99,000 NP, and often times you can find deals on bulk items selling for cheaper than they would individually. (Remember to check the Shop Wiz!) But there's still danger here. Many scams listed above can be found at the TP; 'I can tell you secrets if you bid on this lot,' or 'go to the site, it gave me lots of NP!' But there are other, more devious people in the TP you've go to watch out for.
1) Account selling. Not only limited to the TP, but this is where you will often see it. 'The person who bids the highest will get my account. I hate Neopets/parents giving away computer/moving to Canada, where they have no computers and are illiterate (kidding! ;-))...the excuses go on and on. But why do they need good NP and items if they're leaving? Oh, they say they'll reject the bid. ...You believe that, right? No? Good!
2) Starberries! Newsflash: while these berries are pretty, they don't do anything. If your pets eat em, your pets won't turn starry. If they did, why would starberries be worth about 2000np and Starry P/Bs be worth over 100,000? (UPDATE: Starberries are now RETIRED, and therefore much more expensive. But they still don't turn your pet starry!) And, if you combine a White paint brush (p/b) with a Starberry in the Cooking Pot, this also will not turn out to be a Starry P/B. Similarly, rainbowberries do not turn your pet rainbow. Be wary of this; I see it often.
3) Non-Hidden Tower items selling as Hidden Tower items! The key to this one, really, is just to check the Shop Wiz. MANY people try to pass off the relatively inexpensive Super U-Bend as the expensive Hidden Tower (HT) item U-Bend of Great Justice. And, too often it works. I've also seen things like Usul cookiedough Bombs and Greycorns passed off as HT items. Similarly, Green Faerie Erasers aren't HT items either - Eraser of the Dark Faerie is.
4) Non-petpets selling as petpets. This one's a little tricky, but anyone knowledgeable with items and restocks (as you are ;-)) should see right through this. Many folks try to pass off the cheap Tyrannian food, Dino Snappers, as well as the food Wriggling Grubs off as petpets. If you must bid, check the Shop Wiz first and make sure you're bidding fair. That way, if it's not a petpet, at least you can resell it for a decent price.
Miscellaneous Information
The info that doesn't really belong anywhere else, but is important nevertheless!
Sometimes, for some strange reason, items will not show up when you put in, 'identical to my phrase,' on Search Items at the Shop Wiz. Two of these such items are Stone Tablet and Strawberry Jetsam Ice Cream. You'll have to put it on 'containing my phrase,' for these such items. Most of the time, though, your best bet is to have it always set on identical to my phrase. After all, can you imagine trying to search for the item Sweet and going through all the items with the word Sweet in it's name?
Going with the above paragraph, here's how you can tell whether the item is glitchy or is so rare that it's just not showing up on the Shop Wiz. Search for Stone Tablet. You'll see,
Searching for ...
I did not find anything :( Please try again and I will search elsewhere!
The "..." means there is no such item. You've either typed it in wrong or you'll have to do 'containing the phrase' with it. But, if the item is so rare, you'll see this.
Searching for ... Portable Cloud
I did not find anything :( Please try again and I will search elsewhere!
Portable Clouds, for the record, are verrrry high level Jhudora's Quest items.
That's about it, folks. It's a lot of information to handle, I know, but it can be done. Play hard, play fair, play smart. YOU are the only person that can guide yourself to riches and, similarly, protect your account. No one will do it for you! Hopefully you've found this guide helpful. Since it encompasses such a broad range of subjects, I know I missed something. Feel free to neomail me! Also, if you need additional help or need anything about this guide cleared up for you, don't hesitate to neomail. Cheerio - and have fun in Neopia!
A big thanks to x_tree_nymph for the HTML! You're wonderful! :D
