the most important part

The pristine sands of Mystery Island Beach were bleached of color in the wake of the moonlight. All was quiet. A lonesome coconut lay on the ground, far away from any nearby trees. How had it gotten there?

A soft sigh, as if the wind were whispering, was heard. The coconut shifted a bit until it was upright. It gazed out across the reflective water, quiet and unmoving once more.

he's as cold as steel

A long time ago, Mystery Island was the major center of science in Neopia. The variant climates it was home to, as well as the abundance of wildlife, made it an ideal place to preform experimentation. For a time, scientists came and went from the island peacefully. A treaty between the natives and the scientists kept everyone relaxed and satisfied.

That changed the day M. S. Scorchio approached.

He had an idea. He wanted to build a giant laboratory, one that would take up most of Mystery Island. It would be the home of a slightly smaller, but still relatively huge ray. The ray would be used to zap pets, to give them unnatural strength, unparalleled abilities, and striking colors to boot.

Naturally, the ray went against the moral and ethical codes of many scientists. To zap poor pets, in the hope that they'd be better...how cruel! And then there were others, who thought it'd be an interesting test, something new and fresh to experiment...

That idea divided the whole scientific body in two.

The debates between the two parties became more and more hostile, reaching an almost violent level. A timid island faerie spoke up, bringing the argument to an end, Please, don't fight on our island anymore.

With those few words, the treaty became null and void.

With much huffing and complaining, the scientists moved out. No matter what they wanted, they definitely did not want to start a war. Left in their wake was extra space - miles and miles of beach, empty and lifeless - and odd-looking trees. The trees weren't too tall, but they had enormous leaves. They stretched out and created lovely spots of shade. Their trunks were bristly and tough, but it was soon discovered the the wood was perfect for creating bowls, cups, and utensils. What was most fascinating, though, was the bulbous growths. Round like balls, dark brown, furry, and filled with tasty juice -- coconuts, they were soon called. And that name stuck.

Eclipsed by the scientists' most prominent argument, proposed by the M(ad) S(cientist) Scorchio, were the smaller, more numerous disagreements. And that is why no one remembers the Brainpower argument.

The argument in itself was hushed, secretive, and only a select few people knew of it. The goal was not debatable; the intent was shockingly clear. The scientists wanted to create a new species, one that was sturdier than the rest, and had the ability to hold the brainpower of billions.

It was an underground movement, hidden from both the public, and the massive society of scientists. It was a secret experiment, and a wholly unsuccessful one at that. There was only one batch of neopets created, and none survived. Except for the very last one, pet 150.

He lived, and no one knew.

That one neopet that lived was, of course, Bo. No one is quite sure why. Maybe the virus injected in him had just enough time to incubate before he was picked from the tree, or maybe he was skipped over an injection completely. Regardless of why, he lived.

Being the only one of your kind is never easy, which is probably why Bo keeps to himself. He's a neopet, but he's also an experiment. He struggles to comprehend what that means, and even his vast intelligence hasn't been able to help him understand. He's become a quiet, lonely being. He's trying to come to terms with what he is.

Like anyone who's been unsocial for long periods of time, he's awkward. He can't figure out the reasoning behind the actions of others, and he just doesn't understand. He analyzes his actions from an objective standpoint, never acting on pure instinct or emotion. A few island natives have become his "friends", but he's trying to change.

He's just having a really hard time.

He'll continue to think and analyze until he figures out the one thought that's been a constant nagging in his head: What makes a neopet a neopet?
