I wasn't born that way.
My name is Emily Rita Brooke underneath.
But I'm not her anymore.
I'm thirteen years old, but I'll be sixteen by the time my saga has been told.
With the help of my neighbor, an old woman named Marjorie, I was able to take the identity of a boy and travel west, to Montana, to a racetrack.
Before the Great Depression, I rode horses, and now I get to do that again. On great champions. Not only that, but I can get money for it; send it home....
Now, if only I can keep this up until 'the big one' comes along.

This isn't who I want to be. I was born in Chicago at the heart of an economic boom. My dad is somewhere out West with another woman thanks to the xxxx CCC and my mom is...not quite there? Anyhow, I have two little sisters named Marlene and Esta. I love them. I also have an older brother named Sonny. I don't love him as much as I should.
My story ends in 1933. Another person's begins. The money has run out, and Sonny can't help that. I'm catching the next train to Montana, where I'll start to be a second, fabricated person. Well, at least I'll be free.
