FAQ

I actually only have a few subjects that crop up a lot, so this is a rather short FAQ. If you have a question you think should be added to it, Neomail me.

Alternatives

If you want to block the ads but don't want to bother with the rather convoluted method presented here, or simply don't have any problem with downloading and installing things as some people do, here are some suggestions to make your Neolife easier.

Firefox

(And any other browser supporting Firefox extensions).

Find and install the Adblock Plus extension. Not just "Adblock." Subscribe to Easylist USA if you are in the United States; otherwise, select the most appropriate choice for you. You may wish to use Fanboy's List instead. I don't know what the difference is. Do not subscribe to both Fanboy's and Easylist, as they will be redundant and will slow down Firefox with no benefit to you. If you find that a gap in the top of the page remains after starting to use ABP, you can add to the ABP filters: neopets.com##*#ban

Chrome

Same thing as Firefox.

Internet Explorer

Get a real browser.

Opera

Find "Fanboy's Adblock List for Opera" and follow the instructions.

Safari

Find and install "Adblock for Safari." Refer to Firefox instructions.

I now have two great buttons created by Yael!

Animated Static

Here's an old linkback image so you can see the aesthetic atrocities I used to force upon you poor people:

Extras

You can add these to your ad-block stylesheet to further customize the website.

This will hide the sidebar containing the Neofriend list and your active pet:

Screenshot Code

(drag to address bar to enlarge)

This will widen threads ('topics') on the Neoboards to occupy the space that the ad to the right used to fill:

Screenshot Code

(drag to address bar to enlarge)

This will hide most of the "Have you..." module on the sidebar (the one that nags you to create a pet, get your newbie pack, make a Neohome, etc.):

Screenshot Code

(drag to address bar to enlarge)

These are the most common, relevant, or likely to be used customizations, but remember that you can tweak any element to your preferences. Be aware, however, that in some cases user styles apply to all web sites, not just Neopets, so you may have undesirable effects such as an element named .sidebar on another site failing to appear.

Why You Should Use This Guide

A picture's worth a thousand words, eh? Well, here's a few thousand words to look over. Drag the images to your address bar to enlarge them.

Before

After

This thing used to melt your eyes.

The guide began namelessly on /~The_Freebie_Kacheek. There was no fancy navigation, just a list of links, and in the beginning it supported only Internet Explorer, Opera, and Firefox on Windows. There was very little formatting in it; it was aesthetically unimpressive. After a time I made this linkback image:

And so the guide remained for a while.

I'm never satisfied with what I've done, though, and even objectively such a simple design wasn't going to cut it. I created a page identical to this except that the banner used a rather stronger word for Hades.

People complained about the red on black, and after a while I added that Eye-Friendly Version link you see there, which led to a version of the page which was all black-on-white.

I used these linkback images:

At some point the stronger H word was quite clearly banned, and I found myself forced to remove it. This became The Mega-Über-Pwnsome Ad-Blocking Guide from Hades.

And so the guide remained for a longer while.

I eventually gave in to the complaints of burning eyes, and gave the users this:

I figured making the actual content black-on-white would be good enough to satisfy the sensitive-eyed while maintaining the theme of the guide, but I still received complaints. I ignored these at the time, figuring it was their problem.

And so the guide remained for an even longer while, and went through many page moves and emergency mirrors, as I was often frozen, chain-frozen, and IP banned.

Unfortunately, it wasn't too long before I started to dislike that design. The navigation was awkwardly built. Each box you see there had to be individually styled and absolutely positioned. It didn't look good on a wide-screen monitor. At all. I was also becoming something of an advocate against superfluous web graphics. After a good long time of tinkering and thinkering, I produced this:

It was a vast improvement, if I did say so myself (and I did), but it was still red on black, which, as I later realized, is not all that pleasant, especially on a CRT monitor.

And so the guide remained, despite this, for the longest while yet, while I was away playing around with the Navy.

I gave in to the last complaint about a painful color scheme in late November of 2008, and temporarily changed to this while I thought over my options:

Obviously this is only slightly better than red on black as far as contrast shock goes. I finally decided that nothing beats a simple black-on-white for readability, and changed to the guide you see here today.

I'll probably change it again someday as I'm terribly fickle, but, while I am sad to see the days of The Mega-Über-Pwnsome Ad-Blocking Guide from Hades go, I'm not at all upset to see the last remnants of its original design disappear.

Review Review

I was recently (March 2009) reviewed by some person I've never met before who seems to really like saying what she thinks. (I solicited her, though; don't go getting any ideas that she just shoved this at me). I'm not terribly displeased with it, but had to write this anyway, at least so that I could nitpick at the comments about the layout and updates. If my defensiveness is of offense to you and you become offensively defensive due to my defense to your offense, you are an overly defensive, immature dunghead and should go eat a mud pie. Nyah.

First Impression: 8/20
Total lack of a layout. The counter is on one end, and a button (yes, I know it's fine) is just poking out there with no reason whatsoever. I see rows and rows of words (which is your purpose, I know) but nothing strikes out at me to make me want to stay.

Lack of a layout? What do you want me to do, draw lines around everything and color-code? Stick the content in miniscule scrolling divs? Come on, be constructive here, please. The counter is on one end. Okay. It's there because it's meant to be out of the way, as it's about the most non-vital content on the entire page. I imagine the button would look less out-of-place if it had next to it the other buttons which I'd removed because all three people stopped linking back to me. What, the idea of not seeing adverts doesn't draw you in? D:

Layout: 7/20
Like I said, quite a lack of a layout. What I like, however, is what you've done with the Neopets header. I'm not sure if that's allowed, but that's with right there. I also like what you've done with the navigation. But again, since it doesn't work in all browsers, I had a little point taken off right there.

Well, they said it must have a Neopets header at all times. Never said I couldn't change it. O:-) And it is so not my fault Firefox's last update broke my navigation. I think I know what it is and will fix it sometime soonish, maybe.

Neatness: 9/10
Aside from the counter and the banner, it otherwise looks very very neat. I like that the tables are all the same size, and that you will forever more be able to see the navigation.

Why, thankya. But I use divs, not tables. Tables are for -- say it with me -- tabular data. Not page structure. I agree, though; fixed position is terribly underused.

Spelling and grammar: 5/5
A lot going there. xD I picked chunks of paragraphs to read through for any mistakes, but I couldn't find any. Well done.

y how kidn of u 2 say i do taek quit gud care in my eng && wuldnt b cot ded makin 1 littel misteak.

Content: 20/15
I'm going to give you extra credit here, because you definitely deserve it. Very good content, and the way in which you put 'Why You Should Use This Guide' intrigued me a lot. You've got a very detailed guide there, and I am simply awed.

Thanks. Granted, it's nothing I thought of myself, but no one else bothered to compile it all. I rather felt as if I had to.

Site Name: 5/5
Short, sweet, nice.

Shazam.

Button: 4/5
Buttons are not made by you, and they are slightly difficult to read with the slightly blurred words.

The ugly one is mine. D: That is so not blurry. It's, like, a tasteful smudge halo. Gawd.

Updates: 0/5
None existent, though I know you actually don't need it. xD But I have no choice.

Oh, wow. I had to stop at this one and remind myself how much this monitor cost me. Really. This is the one I'm not joking about. Read History and tell me I have no updates. That covers aesthetic updates over the few years this guide has been around. Every time I think of it, I beat myself for not starting a changelog, but it's much too late now and I could never remember everything significant that I updated here. Suffice it to say it began nowhere near this and I greatly resent being told I have not been updating.

Originality/Uniqueness: 15/10
I've never seen one like it. Extra credit! It makes up for the Update bit.

There are a few about, but they either cover Firefox's Adblock extension, or have narrow browser support. None of them have fixed flyout navigation. Giggity.

Links: 5/5
Very nicely done.

Thank you.

Suggestions:
I understand that you probably want to save load time because you have a lot of content, but a simple CSS layout to make everything look more appealing would contribute better to your score. The content is amazing, however, and I bow my head at the effort you placed into this. However, due to my score scale, I can only grade you so well.

What do you call a simple CSS layout then?

Suggestions:
I understand that you probably feel obligated to stick to your own guidelines, but that should be no reason to let your judgement deviate from what you'd really like to say. You do so have a choice. It's a lovely review overall, not only for the flattery, but it's nothing I'd change anything for.

Overall Score: 78/100
