The Other Side of the Spring

You may have heard of the Hungarian mirror trap; a dangerous- potentially deadly- spell. Only the most experienced and powerful wizards of the dark ages were able to cast this spell. But there is a similar magic that is much more ancient and mystical. All it requires is a small pool of water and a magic lost to the world.
There are those however who have spent their lives studying the lost enchantments. And only one man has ever been able to cast this nameless spell.
What makes this spell so dangerous is that not only can you be trapped on the other side of the reflection, but the caster can potentially make an entirely new world on the other side. They may fill it with the creatures and things of their fancy- able to control all.
One man dedicated his life to learning the nameless spell. And in his last days he successfully cast it. But he was no fool. He cast it on a small spring of water, hidden deep within the forests that existed long ago. It was one of his final acts. Knowing he was dying, the last thing he did after filling the new world with the things of his imagination was to make a keeper for the world- to make sure no one would ever find or destroy his precious world.

I am the keeper of the other side of the spring.

How It Came To Be

My allies- who are few and far between- know me as Keeper. But to the outside world and those who wish to destroy my inheritance, I am called Avyri.

Dreadge
I watched the man take his final breathes. I was his creation and so I drew close to him as he spoke his last words. "Never die." He breathed. "Never surrender it." After he was gone, I knew what my duties were.

I entered the spring and was greeted warmly by the new creatures that dwelt there. They were only a few days older than I. But they knew I was above them, and they respected me. For centuries, I watched life take its course. I stayed young and fit, as I was first created. But I watched my charges have children, live happy lives, and then go to meet the creator. I watched it happen over and over again; each generation growing close to me and then disappearing as I lived on. My blessing soon became a curse.

I learned I shouldn't grow close to anyone, for I would just outlive them. I did my duty as Keeper. I protected them and their world from the imposing threats of the outside world.

But things soon began to grow strange. In his studies, the creator had not foreseen the problems that would arise. The first was that things turned as they did in the world above. Each generation grew more wicked than the last; and soon my lands were wrought with more evil than I could manage.

Overwhelmed and irritated, I made the rash decision to outcast those who were descendents of evil. They were banished to the outerlands- the lands that the creator did not fill. But the evil kept rising from the innerlands. And as I tried my best to deal with it, an even larger threat was growing; one that my charges and I could never have predicted.
There was a reason that spell and the magic it came from was forbidden and lost to the world. The final outcome was much too dangerous. As we lived our lives, our two worlds were merging. After centuries, the forests had been cleared and a large city stood above our heads. Now our world was joining with theirs. Human visitors became more frequent and more dangerous. Finally the humans had corrupted my world so badly that I made a decision that I will regret forever. I destroyed my inheritance. I could no longer keep it and I saw no other option. I erased the residents as well as the humans who were visiting from the land above.

It was gone.

But not I with it; for I would live forever. I was forced to wander the land above, outcast by all who saw me. I was fated to live with my decision forever. So now I am just trying to survive….not that I can die. But to encourage death makes for a very pathetic life. I have met few friends who have not shied away from me. I cherish them. And perhaps, one day, society as a whole will accept me and the sins I have committed.

Panda
Panda is a strange girl. She spends a lot of her day sleeping and drawing. I don't know how she manages to feed herself or the pets that live with her. But she's a good person, even if she can be kind of wild and erm...out there. Her favorite things besides the two mentioned above are swimming, writing, and drinking Mountain Dew. I think it killed her brain a long time ago.

Zicmai
Zic is one of the sweetest xweetoks I know. I refer to her as my little sister. We've grown close and she doesn't judge me for my past. Her parents were both pirates but she has recently left that life to become a normal citizen. Don't be fooled by tiny stature though. She is one tough cookie and could probably beat you in a fight.

Dreadge
Dreadge is probably the only one I know who can be grumpier and more withdrawn than I. He's had a hard life though. When he was younger he was cursed and became the keeper of a forbidden mountain and the gems that lie within. But he disobeyed the instruction of his curser and now bares firey scars. He and Drift have a very special relationship.

More coming soon...

Love

Eda
My beautiful enchantress. She once lived in my inherited world, protecting those of the waters and beaches. The most wonderful being I had ever known. In the end, I saw her as the only thing that could never become corrupted. And so I put her to sleep and cast her from that land before I destroyed it. She is now somewhere in the earth's waters; and I am still trying to find her.

Mags

I met Mags in my wanderings on earth. At first I found her annoying, for she kept following me. But over time she helped me escape from a few scraps and we've bonded over the years. She is blind, but that does not stop her from doing amazing things. Mags is very old and I sometimes wonder what she truly knows about me.

Goodbye

This is the end. I hope my story has inspired you and I am glad that you have taken the time to really hear about me. May you have a safe jounry as you leave.

Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.
