So...Are you coming with us to the training today? Mili sat on the edge of the bed and gave Avoirie an exasperated look. She'd been trying to get her to go to the "Be a Nurse for a Day" meeting all week long. Avo sighed and picked up her gymnastic suit, slipping over her head and onto her thin frame. She tucked her wings neatly into the suit and pressed them flat against her back. Her long tail flicked up as she checked her reflection in the mirror.
Come on! I don't have all day! Avoirie rolled her eyes at the familiar orange clouds as they danced across her vision. Mili shrugged her shoulders and turned toward the door with a snide remark.
Oh stop complaining, Han! We'll be ready in a second. Her soft blue eyes penetrated Avoirie's stare. What good would the meeting do her? She knew why her friend wanted her to go. From an accident three years ago, Mili had become blind. The two friends had cried for nights, yet even when Avoirie tried using her healing powers on Mili, nothing happened. She still hope that somehow, Avo could heal her.
Listen. I have to go to gym, but I'll meet you guys downtown at the library for the meeting. I don't know how you think this will help with my magic, but I'll go... Mili squealed and jumped off the bed, with surprising accuracy, she grabbed her friend, giving her a brief hug and turning the door handle.
Hanison stood in the hallway, looking as casual as he always did. His back rested up against the wall, his shaggy red hair tumbled into his face.
Ready?
The two girls nodded and they walked down the hallway, heading out the main door and into the sun.
He really does looks nice today... Avoirie's gaze lingered on her childhood friend as they crossed the courtyard of the school. Hanison's head turned back to her and he smiled.
Thanks, Avo.
Avoirie rolled her eyes at her friends skill. She tucked the other thoughts into the back of her mind that she had been thinking about a second before he said that. By the look on his face, he didn't hear them. Mind reading came in handy sometimes. So did his other skills...
Hanison smiled at the girls and raised his hands over his head, bringing them down in a large circle and finally sweeping the ground with them. He turned to Mili first. Where shall it be today? Grinning he watched as Mili rolled her eyes and replied with the statement that she'd like to go to the mall and that he better be waiting for her at 2 o'clock sharp. With a wave at Avo she disappeared with a flick of Han's wrist.
You're next. Gymnastic, right? Avoirie's heart sped up and she nodded. He smiled at her and that was the last she saw of him, the next thing she knew, she was in the gym.
At one in the afternoon, a pale girl with striped arms walked out of the gymnastics room with sweat on her forehead. Her coach patted her on the back saying that her pike was almost 90 degrees today, and that she should be happy with her arabesque. Avoirie's thoughts sped ahead to her piano waiting in the school's band room and she smiled. Arabesque by Burgmuller. That's what she'd play tonight. She took a quick sip of her water and shoved the metal bottle into her pack, running down the hall at a break-neck pace, leaving her coach wondering how she could practice her hardest for two hours and still do that. She bounded out the front door and on to the lawn, a huge smile plastered on her face. With a snap, her wings came out from under her suit and she was glad for the lower back. Avoirie's wings were 7 feet each, an impressive sight, making pedestrians stare for a second before she shot off into the sky.
Finishing with a beautiful crescendo, she rested her hands on her thighs and looked up at the wavering lights around her. It was so beautiful. She started over for the forth time, watching the colors play across her hands as they danced over the piano keys. Greens and purples along with reds and bright greys were in ribbons of dust all around her. It was her own little show, her own play. She closed her eyes and the colors stayed with her, dancing inside her head. Synesthesia could be a good thing. Avoirie stood and did a small bow, watching the colors fade. She glanced up at the clock and sighed. Ten minutes 'till two. Hanison should be waiting outside by now.
That was beautiful, Dreams. Why didn't you say you could play like that? Hanison stepped out of the shadows and Avo jumped.
Han, don't scare me like that. She shook her head. How long've you been here? He smiled and stepped forward, taking her elbow.
Long enough. But really... Does Mili know about this? Avoirie sighed and pulled herself away from Han. Mili knew and she felt like a traitor to her other life-long friend.
Yeah. She knows... I'm sorry I never told you... I don't know why I didn't. She looked down at the floor and he shook his head. Hanison walked toward the door, opening it and gesturing out into the hallway.
C'mon. It doesn't matter. I know now. Let's go, Mili's waiting. He smiled and she followed him, feeling better because of his self-assured grin.
At the mall, the two found Mili in her usual place, on a bench near the bookstore. Her finger tips rested lightly on the pages of an open book and her head was tilted downward so that she "didn't look silly". She started teaching herself Braille two months after the accident and was still learning. Mili had bought 3 books today, and was on the last one by the time they got there. Her head tilted up at the sound of Hanison's voice and she got up and walked over to where she knew they'd be standing. Hanison raised his hand, making a few hand gestures and transporting them to the library.

To the Beat of Our Noisy Hearts- Matt Nathanson
She don't lie in bed at night
Staring at the ceiling
She don't wait to begin
She bets on long shots
She wants what they've got
She skates where the ice thins
On and on, we keep going
Crowded like subway cars
On and on, to the beat of our noisy hearts
Our hearts
She was her mother's secret
She was daddy's girl
She brought weekend boys home in her curls
She said, "My love is a fever.
Come on, touch my skin.
They all think I'm easy,
I'm easy, cause I let them win.
On and on, we keep going
Crowded like subway cars
On and on, to the beat of our noisy hearts
On and on, we keep going
Crowded like subway cars
On and on, to the beat of our noisy hearts
To the beat of our noisy hearts
She said, "Pick up the phone
Cause I need to feel more alone
And your voice drives me crazy.
On and on, we keep going
Crowded like subway cars
On and on, to the beat of our noisy hearts
On and on, we keep going
Crowded like subway cars
On and on, to the beat of our noisy hearts, hearts, hearts
On and on, we keep going
Crowded like subway cars
On and on, to the beat of our noisy hearts
