A falling star

Fell from your heart

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A young starry shoyru walked through the halls of the Virtupets Space Station. Her parents worked here and so she had called the station home for as long as she could remember.

I'unno, she murmured. I wanna travel so I guess I could be a pilot or somethin'.

A purple shoyru of similar age walked besides her. Oh I want to be a pilot too! You can be my co-pilot.

Aurafe shot a cold gaze at her friend. Yah right. I guess I can train to be a space warrior on the side.

A green grundo passed the two shoyrus and carried a large box with him.

Space warrior? Why?

You nev' know when that might come in handy. Pilot needs someone who can defend him if trouble breaks out, right?

The purple shoyru grinned happily.

Let's make a promise, Aurafe declared.

Her friend blinked curiously. Hmm, ok.

The faraway stars glittered through the thick station windows.

When we are old enough, let's go into that fancy piloting academy and become pilots!

That's a great idea Aurafe!

The purple shoyru extended his arm and held out his pinky.

A pinky swear Lhoukas? she sighed. Fine.

Pilots...

And landed in my eyes

I screamed aloud, as it tore through them

Personality

Aurafe can be quite blunt with her words, but since her mannerisms are very passive and calm, they don't come off as offensive or rude. She takes her duties very seriously (a little bit more so than her partner Lhoukas) and since she underwent training to be a space warrior she takes orders very well. She can come off as aloof but once you get to know her she becomes friendlier person who only speaks when truly necessary.

Appearance

Aurafe is a typical starry shoyru and can usually be seen wearing her purple hair in a ponytail. Since she is not a full-time warrior (meaning she is not enlisted in the army and takes orders only from the piloting HQ) she tends to wear light space-clothing. Her tail is coated in semi-heavy armour. This armour, plus her wings, can throw off her balance sometimes but with enough training she has gotten used to the extra weight. She can sometimes be seen carrying weapons (blasters, swords, etc).

And now it's left me blind

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out

Two adult starry shoyrus walked side by side towards an open space in the station. One of them carried a child in her arms, holding her gently with her steps. As the shoyrus made their way into the clearing, a small playground came into view. It was mostly composed of slides and swings, objects that could be brought to space and placed indoors.

The mother settled her child onto the floor. We'll be back at the end of the day, okay, Aurafe?

Okay mama, she mumbled. She had already become accustomed to this. Her parents would drop her off at the space station daycare while they spent the day at work.

Have fun, her father reassured as he walked away with her mother.

Aurafe played with her locks of purple hair as she watched her parents leave. Her eyes inspected her surroundings. Most of the time there weren't any children here since the workers at the station did not have the time to start families and it was uncommon for families to move to the space station. Aurafe had been born aboard the station, so it was all she knew. One day she hoped to travel and explore not just space, but Neopia as well.

The child made her way onto the swings, gingerly sitting down and adjusting her silk dress.

Then something caught her attention.

Two other adult shoyrus had come to drop off a child. This was new. The child had messy white hair and purple skin. He waved goodbye to his parents with enthusiasm and ran towards the swing.

The boy quickly presented himself to Aurafe. My name's Lhoukas! What's yours??

Aurafe, she uttered.

Cool!

Aurafe was bothered by his friendliness, but shrugged it off. The boy sat in the swing next to her and blabbed on and on about something Aurafe wasn't paying attention to.

...and yeah so my parents work here!

Aurafe stared blankly at Lhoukas as he spoke, swinging slowly with her feet dangling in the air.

By the time Lhoukas had stopped talking and stood up from his swing, Aurafe had lost track of time. Had hours gone by since Lhoukas approached her?

She felt her body go forward with a push.

What are ya doin'! Aurafe squealed.

Take it easy, I'm just pushing you so your swing can move!

Aurafe felt herself go higher and higher with each push.

Stop it!

It's not that she didn't like the swinging, she just didn't want an energetic boy doing it for her.

She dug her feet into the floor, bringing the swing to a grinding halt.

Lhoukas stepped away slowly. Hey, why'd ya-

Without thinking twice, Aurafe landed a firm punch on Lhoukas' forehead. I told ya to stop pushin' me!

The boy rubbed his forehead and let out a quiet whimper.

Don't cry! Aurafe ordered angrily. If you'd listened to me I wouldn't have had to punch you!! She didn't want the nursery supervisors to notice and tell on her to her parents.

But he cried anyways.

Aurafe let out a long sigh. Deep down, she knew she shouldn't have punched him, but she just hadn't been able to hold back.

She held the boy's hand and pulled him along. Here.

The two shoyrus soon stood in front of a café, Aurafe standing on her toes and looking over the ledge.

A bulky green grundo soon towered over her. Oh hello little one, what would you like?

A cupcake please, the girl requested.

The grundo handed her a cupcake covered in blue icing and decorated with a big star-shaped ornament. I'll put it on your parents' tab.

Thank you!

By now, Lhoukas went from crying, to whimpering, to sniffling.

The girl handed him the baked treat. I'm sorry for punching you in the face so have this cupcake.

Huh? Um, thank you, Lhoukas whispered. I promise to ask next time if I can push you.

No, you can push me anytime you'd like, Aurafe stated. When I'm on the swing.

The boy grinned, a grin she at the moment thought to be stupid but a grin she would see time and time again.

.

Hurry UP Lhoukas! the girl called out.

Behind her walked a purple shoyru, clearly dragging his feet with an annoyed look on his face.

Aw, why do we have to go to the gym!? he complained. I think you're the only one on this station that enjoys exercising.

Aurafe ignored his complaints and kept making her way to the station gym.

Come on Aurafe! My parents taught me ALL DAY today!!

Home-schooling was common aboard the station, since few children were ever about (most workers getting their education on Neopia) so the need for an education program at the station was not in high demand. The station was more of a workplace than a recreational place for families to live.

As Lhoukas came closer to the girl, she swatted his face gently with her wing. You don't have to follow me you know.

I know I know, the boy sighed as he pushed the girl's wings away. But you're the only other kid my age I know plus I'd be super bored if I just went back to my family's quarters.

Too bad then, 'cause I'm going to the gym. Plus, it's not like a little exercise will kill you.

Lhoukas frowned, wondering if that had been a jab at his scrawny physique.

Aurafe soon found herself jogging on a treadmill, staring out the windows and into space. Her eyes remained focused on the faraway burning lights, which soon flickered towards the yellow markings on her skin. For the longest time she always felt space called out to her, as if love for space flowed through her very veins. Her parents were starry shoyrus, as well as her grandparents and almost all relatives that lived on Neopia. Could it be that a strong love for space is common with starry pets? Aurafe remembered her parents saying that starry pets may have originated from the stars themselves, which contradicts the "Dr. Sloth" theory of origin. Whatever it may be, Aurafe could feel this need, ever since she was a child, to explore space as much as she could (the space station felt a little too stuffy for her at times).

Maybe...

Aurafe!!

The starry shoyru almost tripped but kept her stance on the treadmill. Lhoukas, what is it don't yell at me like that!

Oh, it's just that you were spacing out and kind slowed down.

Aurafe picked up the pace while glaring at Lhoukas, who walked at a much slower speed on his treadmill. Let's go to the weight room.

**

Can we go now Aurafe? Please?

Not yet.

Lhoukas lifted a 10 pound weight over his head. Gah! I don't know how you can even enjoy this...

Aurafe held the same type of weights before her. If it weren't for me, your bones would be as soft as a cushion. The gravity was different in space, obviously, so exercise was important.

It's not like we are in zero gravity all the time!! Lhoukas complained. You're just obsessed because you want to be a space warrior.

Lhoukas was right. One of Aurafe's ambitions as she entered her young adulthood was to become knowledgeable in the fighting arts. If she were to explore space, a little self defense wouldn't hurt.

Lhoukas, you wanted to be a pilot right, she murmured.

The purple shoyru settled the weights on the floor. Huh? Yeah. Do you want to be my co-pilot??

Aurafe shook her head. She definitely knew she wanted to be a space warrior on the side but she still didn't know what to choose as her main career path. Being the daughter of two respected researchers, she could easily go down that road, but she wasn't sure yet.

I wanna be a space pilot and graduate from the academy and deliver stuff! And travel too I guess, Lhoukas explained. My parents said that as soon as I finish my education courses I can start going to the piloting academy here in the station.

As always, Aurafe listened to his words but made little to no comments. She had been lifting weights for quite a while and could start to feel the fatigue in her muscles.

Let's take a break, Aurafe announced.

Lhoukas stretched his arms. FINALLY.

The two shoyrus sat side by side on a couch in the gym's lounge area. The purple shoyru rested his head on his friend's shoulder.

Sooo tired, he yawned. I hope you don't mind me using you as a pillow.

Aurafe glanced at him briefly. Whatever...

This wouldn't be the last time the aspiring warrior would be questioning her future.
