Aisha~
 |
The Maraquan Aisha was the second species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 24th day of Relaxing, Y5 (June 2003).
This pet combines the lungs of an aisha with the gills of a fish for equal breathing ability both on land and in the sea. Its back legs and both sets of ears have evolved into fins to better suit its marine environment. These creatures are thought to be just as intelligent as their surface-dwelling counterparts. |
Sailors have often told tales of brief meetings with such creatures out on the open ocean, but these stories were usually classified as myths, until now... There has been a recent explosion in sightings of Maraquan Aishas all over Neopia. Not only sailors' tales, but water-dwellers, pirates, and plenty of ordinary pets and owners are claiming to have had contact with these graceful creatures. Check out the following for evidence:

Maraquan Aishas are also known for their beauty. They like to dress themselves up and are often seen wearing a necklace made of seashells and pearls. In fact, one such female of the species has set up her own shop, Collectable Sea Shells, in the underwater city. |
A Star is Born: Through the recent war fought in New Maraqua, one of these creatures has reached fame as a heroine. Her name is Isca, and she is a Maraquan Aisha that exemplifies so many of the characteristics typical of this species. Apart from her beauty and intelligence, her kindness and courage aided her in becoming a sort of savior for ocean-dwelling pets everywhere. More information is available here. |
|
Hidden in the Shadows: On the other end of the spectrum, this Maraquan Aisha, sister to Isca, seemed to have taken to evil until the close of the war when she also helped the Maraquans to triumph. Caylis displayed amazing magical powers... Could magic have something to do with the creation of Maraquan pets? It's worth looking into. |

Blumaroo~
 |
The Maraquan Blumaroo was the fourth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 8th day of Hiding, Y5 (August 2003).
This pet occurs most frequently in warm waters. Note the long, tightly curled tail which the creature uses to attach itself to strands of seaweed and drift there with the current. It has been found that most warm seaweed beds do contain at least a couple of specimens. They are fairly slow, yet happy, peaceful creatures. |
Although often hard to spot due to their being relatively small and camouflaged to fit into their favorite seaweed environment, a couple of sightings have been recorded. Check out the following:

Cybunny~
 |
The Maraquan Cybunny was the twenty-fourth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 12th day of Eating, Y7 (April 2005).
While the ears and the coloring of this pet have adapted to better fit its marine environment, it has not completely lost the fur coat that keeps it warm in its natural wintery home. It is speculated that the seasonal travels of these creatures bring them as far north as Tyrannia and possibly even the polar icecaps of Terror Mountain. (Little is known of what lies beneath the northern seas of Neopia. Could it be that something there initiated the existence of these strange creatures?) |
With such powerful hind-flippers and an elongated tail for extra speed and maneuverability, the Maraquan Cybunny is hard to catch, even if it's just for a photograph. Luckily, we have come across a couple of sources:

Elephante~
 |
The Maraquan Elephante was the nineteenth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 7th day of Awakening, Y7 (February 2005).
The first thing to consider with a Maraquan Elephante is its size. They are probably the largest pets ever to exist and are even more massive under the sea as their surface-dwelling counterparts. This pet has no gills, however, and must come to the surface occasionally to breathe by sticking its long trunk above water. |
 |
Although, due to its size, the Maraquan Elephante can be dangerous at times, most of these creatures are actually "gentle giants." One has even been spotted running the Maraquan Petpets shop in New Maraqua where he quite delicately cares for the smallest of ocean-inhabitants until he can find them good homes. |

Grarrl~
 |
The Maraquan Grarrl was the seventeenth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 14th day of Collecting, Y6 (October 2004).
Vaguely resembling a jetsam, the Maraquan Grarrl is fearsome indeed. With its mouth packed full of razor-sharp teeth, keen sense of smell, powerful jaws, and dangerous eating habits, most pets and petpets steer clear. Usually solitary creatures, Maraquan Grarrls tend to lurk in dark and dreary waters…until they get hungry that is… |
Although most people and pets avoid these fierce predators at all costs, we have somehow managed to procure a few recorded sightings. Look to the sources listed below:
- Maraqua World Challenge Map (in background)
- Neopets Full Screen Backgrounds
|
|
 |
Oddly enough, there is at least one Maraquan Grarrl who appears to get along swimmingly with other pets. He runs the Bait Stand at the Underwater Fishing cavern in the ruins of Old Maraqua. This strange fact provokes many troubling questions such as "what exactly does the bait consist of?" "why would anyone in his right mind trust such a salesman?" and of course "what happened to the feet that used to wear all those shoes? |

Ixi~
 |
The Maraquan Ixi was the twenty-fifth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 11th day of Swimming, Y7 (July 2005).
This normally shy and quiet, although also quite curious, creature is specially adapted to the saltwater kelp beds it resides in. When the pet feels threatened (or just wants to play a trick on a friend), it will dig itself a little way into the sandy floor of its home so that only the top of its back shows and be perfectly still. The back of the Maraquan Ixi is covered in thin, dark blue-green flaps of skin that might easily be mistaken for drifting kelp... an exceptional and intricate camouflage job indeed. |

JubJub~
 |
The Maraquan JubJub was the twenty-second species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 29th day of Running, Y7 (March 2005).
This bright and colorful pet one of the smaller Maraquan pet species. It is fairly round in shape, just like its counterparts on land. The odd-looking growths covering most of its body provide structure and protection by being extremely hard and also help the creature by allowing it to blend into its coral reef habitat as well as blend in with others of its kind. When a whole bunch of Maraquan JubJubs gather together on the seafloor, it's hard to tell where one pet ends and the next begins. |
Although they can swim, these creatures usually choose to walk slowly along the ocean floor instead. They are not very quick, and it was pretty easy to collect this evidence:

Kau~
 |
The Maraquan Kau was the fifteenth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 29th day of Gathering, Y6 (September 2004).
Unbeknownst to most, the correct name for a group of Maraquan Kaus is a scherd. It is said that watching a scherd of these creatures swimming quickly toward their goal, stirring up sand and creating a scene, one cannot be sure if he's watching a school of fleet fish or a stampeding herd of bovine. They are indeed stunning creatures. Be careful not to get too close unless you know what you're doing though--those two horns aren't just for looks. |
Unlike most Maraquan species, the Maraquan Kau is quite verbal. It's eerie "song" can be heard from miles away as a long, low note echoing across the vast expanses of unoccupied ocean plains. This dramatic call only adds to the mysterious beauty of these pets. For more examples, the following sightings should prove useful:

Korbat~
 |
The Maraquan Korbat was the eleventh species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 29th day of Running, Y6 (March 2004).
The sharp tail and pointed teeth have given this pet a more dangerous reputation than warranted. Maraquan Korbats are actually quite harmless and even friendly. They are intelligent, inquisitive creatures who make up for their inadequate vision by highly developed senses of both smell and hearing. Amoungst themselves, they use echolocation to communicate as well as to map out their surroundings. (Must look into using echolocation for studying the farthest reaches of the pit.) |
These pets truly are the acrobats of the sea. Their shape and cartilaginous fins allow for graceful maneuvering through the water, just as a bird moves through the air. While we have not yet secured a video of the pet's aerobatics, we do have several recorded still-shots on file.

Kougra~
 |
The Maraquan Kougra was the tenth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 11th day of Running, Y6 (March 2004).
These pets are usually in the medium size range, but it varies from individual to individual. They are all, however, sturdily built with thick features and large, muscular paws. Even underwater, the Maraquan Kougra, has maintained its sharp teeth and claws for hunting small prey. |
With only slightly-above-average speed, these creatures rely on the element of surprise to stun their victims. Whether it's for food or just for fun, they make use of their ability to glide noiselessly and stealthily through the water, not causing a stir. They are also playful and curious, and might be seen honing their skills on anything from sea serpents to seaweed. Our scientists had to develop stealth skills of their own in order to bring us these sources:

Krawk~
 |
The Maraquan Krawk was the fifth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 21st day of Hiding, Y5 (August 2003).
This pet is only slightly less fearsome than its land-going, freshwater counterpart. The two are more similar in looks and behavior than most other species. The main difference, as far as physical appearance goes, is that the Maraquan Krawk has almost completely lost its hind legs. They have dwindled down to two, small, practically useless fins. |
In order to propel itself forward, the pets makes use of it muscular tail as well as its webbed forefeet. It dwells mostly in murky, quiet waters of the ocean, and is sometimes hard to spot if it isn't moving. Luckily, a few sightings of Maraquan Krawks have been obtained and can be accessed at the sources listed below:

Kyrii~
 |
The Maraquan Kyrii was the twelfth/thirteenth species (along with the Maraquan Buzz) to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 21st day of Eating, Y6 (April 2004).
This is a long and lithe pet noted especially for its strange habit of "dancing" as it swims. Maraquan Kyrii appear to observers to be in a perpetual state of cheerfulness, a characteristic that can prove both charming and exasperating at times. |
Another of their unusual habits is forming close mutual bonds with all manner of underwater pets and petpets. By the time a Maraquan Kyrii reaches half its adult size, it will probably have attached itself to some other sea creature. This partner might be a friendly Gelert, a lonely Searex, or even a protective Grarrl, but whatever the situation, the Maraquan Kyrii will remain nearby its entire life.

Lupe~
 |
The Maraquan Lupe was the twenty-third species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 31st day of Running, Y7 (March 2005).
Sadly enough, many people take one glance at the humble Maraquan Lupe without the flashy colors and frills of other sea life and pass by indifferently. They don't stop to discover and consider the many wonders of this amazing creature. It's the spirit of this pet that sets it apart. While lupes are often said to be loyal and noble creatures, this is doubly true of the Maraquan breed. He is a courageous protector and a patient companion. |
On land, Maraquan Lupes walk by flopping their bodies up and down and using their flippers, but in the sea, it's a different matter. Their stream-lined bodies allow for rapid movement through water, and they are also proficient divers. They love to explore unknown crevices and kelpbeds.

Meerca~
 |
The Maraquan Meerca was the ninth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 9th day of Running, Y6 (March 2004).
The most obvious feature of this pet is the short, hard spikes covering its body, which are in fact modified scales. This is a defense mechanism that protects the Maraquan Meerca from predators and other creatures curious enough to get too close. Apart from the spikes, these small pets are extremely poisonous and have short tempers to show for it. |
Each has a spherical body, two small pairs of fins, and two small arms that aren't much use; however, the long, flexible tail makes up for them both practically and aesthetically--its rubbery, elastic texture even ensures that it won't get caught up on the meerca's spines when he's resting.Other sources include:

Moehog~
 |
The Maraquan Moehog was the sixteenth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 5th day of Collecting, Y6 (October 2004).
Although no longer hooved, the pet has retained it's two, large tusks and the dark stripes on its back. The characteristic mane has been replaced by a light-colored dorsal fin. In the wild, it lives mostly off of kelp and is somewhat of a porker, consuming as much as 150 pounds of kelp per day. |
As a general rule, these creatures are gentle, if not quite friendly; however, they can be territorial, and it is therefore best not make them mad. Those tusks aren't just for show! While Maraquan Moehogs usually swim peacefully together in large schools, males in particular have been known to lock tusks in fierce battles. It is said that a single tusk of one of these creatures could cut through a Small Metal Shield in ten seconds flat. This theory has never been tested.

Mynci~
 |
The Maraquan Mynci was the sixth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 6th day of Collecting, Y5 (October 2003).
This pet has traded in its fur for a sleek skin of scales and its tree-gripping feet and tail for slippery webbed toes and a long tailfin. |
Maraquan Myncies are small creatures who tend to hang out in pairs or small groups. They enjoy playing pranks on one another as well as others. There was, at one point, a rumor floating around that they could be "grown," but this has since been proven a scam. For proof, simply study the sightings at the locations listed below:

Pteri~
 |
The Maraquan Pteri was the thirty-second species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 16th day of Awakening, Y8 (February 2006).
This pet is known for its unique pattern, particularly the "flamelike" marking surrounding each eye, and for the beak which mimics that of the surface Pteri. The hard beak is used for cracking open clamshells, a favorite food of this creature. |
Some Maraquan Pteris also feed on algae, plankton, or tinier fish. They spend most of their time in shallow reefs, swimming in large schools made up of as many as eighty animals!

 |
The Maraquan Scorchio was the eighth species to be discovered in its Maraquan form. It was introduced on the 12th day of Sleeping, Y6 (January 2004).
Legend has it that the scales of this pet were made from real gold mined from an ancient undersea cavern. While scientists don't yet have an explanation for the hard, golden, metallic armour covering the body of the Maraquan Scorchio, investigations are underway. |
These creatures are considered friendly, although their size and weight can make them formidable oponents even without the fire-breathing abilities of land Scorchios. They propel themselves using a powerful, muscular tail and steer using two "wings" that protrude from their back. Due to their amiable nature and willingness to cooperate, it has not been difficult to come by sightings--check out the list below:
