You'll find here some general backstory to the characters that populate my world; many of them have a more complete tale on their petpages. They are all always looking for companions, friends, or enemies to link to their profile pages -- feel free to send me a neomail if you're interested!
Ao is a member of the extended royal family in Sakhmet, a cousin to Vyssa and Amira through their mother. Born in Sakhmet and raised in an elite part of the city, Ao was always a quiet, studious girl. While employment by the royal family was already a given due to her pedigree, her job as economic adviser was a dream one. While her talents lie in deep policy work and number crunching, her uncovering of the antique black market around Sakhmet has changed Ao's job description deeply. Now armed with a bodyguard, Takyano, and the ability to work above the law, Ao has been tasked with taking down the smuggling rings that threaten to ruin Sakhmet's economy. Not easily persuaded, Ao was able to ignore Ganann's charms and ban him permanently from Sakhmet, though she suspects he, as well as the pirate Bejasa, have been causing trouble in the lawless Mantu region.
Rey grew up in the underbelly of Neopia Central, a place where chances of a bright future are slim. Rather than become a beggar or barely employed like her neighbors, Rey educated herself and organized a thriving, if quasi-legal black market. At the height of her power, instead of becoming greedy or idealistic, Rey decided to retire and hand over her fortune to her closest friends. She built a small home in the forests surrounding Neopia central, and has lived there ever since, alone. Quite happy in her solitude, Rey opens her home warmly to any travelers who stop in. From her guests, she extracts a new kind of fortune -- a wealth of information and gossip, as well as loyalty from a bevy of strangers, and plenty of exotic goodies that she is gifted. Somehow, even in her relative solitude, Rey has managed to build something of value out of nothing. Begram, Bejasa, and Ganann have all spent time hiding out with Rey, who also isn't shy about hiding those on the run. Her new prim and proper appearance belies the former rapscallion within.

No one really knows how where Ganann came from, and he's not willing to say. Chances are, Ganann isn't even is real name, but it's the one he uses while travelling about Neopia. Despite having no actual credentials or pedigree, Ganann travels in elite circles, dressing and acting like the upper class of whatever society he's currently infiltrating. Ganann's misdeeds are well known, but somehow his victims never notice who he is until he's already gone. Handsome and gifted with a silver tongue, men and women alike easily fall to Gannan's charms. Unknown, too, is his motivations. He doesn't appear to amass any real wealth, taking just enough to get by to the next place and upkeep his current living standard. Some think he's a spy, though for an unknown government. Others thing it's a woman he's after, some long lost love. Perhaps its simply for thrills, for the power he has over others. There are a few who are immune to his charms; Aorilla of Sakhmet makes his life difficult, and Rey greets him these days with little more than an eyeroll. His current whereabouts, of course, are unknown.

Begram is the only son of the Emperor of Shenkuu, and younger brother to Lunara and Lily. He lost his mother when he was born, and his family always treated him as an afterthought. As soon as he was old enough, he snuck out of the palace, and has been on the run ever since. Although he has been able to, on occasion, access his inheritance, Begram mostly seeks out odd and exotic artifacts for rich collectors, a trade that takes him to the very corners of Neopia. Early after his escape, he was kidnapped by Bejasa's pirate crew, and he has been smitten with her ever since. He frequently makes excuses to visit her at Krawk Island, inviting her on his myriad adventures. After rescuing Bejasa from Gannan's tricks, he made a mortal enemy of him, and a reluctant admirer of her. He has recently been slowly making his way back to Shenkuu to claim what is rightfully his, with the help of the poet and sorceress Ciorce.

Maddi is nothing short of a ray of sunshine, just about the sweetest and purest Neopet you'd ever meet. Raised by loving parents who traveled Neopia with her in tow, she settled in Mystery Island when her parents decided to retire. She used her worldly expertise to create a tiny, but wildly popular coffee shop near the Mystery Island trading post, inviting her friend Ani to bake the recipes that she collected from all over Neopia while she dished out innovative coffees and teas, along with a smile and an ear for her customers' troubles. One particular fan is Bejasa, who lent Maddi the funds to open a second shop near her post on Krawk Island. While Maddi is usually concerned with Bejasa's shadier contacts (and not a fan of Begram at all), the unlikely twosome have become the best of friends.

Ani absolutely LIVES for fashion. Even though she lives out on Mystery Island, far from the fashion capital of Neopia, she constantly stays on trend and in the know. On rural MI, this attitude doesn't make for a lot of friends, and Ani grew up as a lonely, aloof child. An avid culture consumer and an astute observer of behavior, Ani found her match in Maddi. Maddi's global travel appealed greatly to Ani, and while not a fashionista herself, Maddi knew enough to sate Ani's thirst for a good conversation. Always eager to please those who give her attention, Ani has poured herself into Maddi's collection of recipes, proving herself to be an adept chef as well. The success of their coffee shop has enabled Ani to start collecting the dresses she has for so long admired, a great thrill to her, and Maddi has truly been bringing out the sweet, smart girl in Ani.

Kwai is practically a relic, part of a vanishing warrior class on mystery island. Raised to fight, valuing loyalty and strength over all else, Kwai finds herself at odds with the increasingly modernized and touristy island. Growing up in the jungle, Kwai trained both with her clan and at the training academy, becoming not only a skilled hand to hand combatant, but a phenomenal archer, quite possibly one of Neopia's finest. Her fellow warriors mostly teach combat at the academy now, and Kwai is sometimes convinced to give demonstrations to eager students or tourists. She is a woman of few words, but is known to be both calm and diplomatic, and is often sought out to settle disputes or mediate duels.
