About The Altador Cup

The Altador Cup Tournament consists of sixteen teams representing the lands of Neopia. The tournament is a double round robin, which means you will play each team twice (30 games). Each day you will play a different team. Be sure to have a go at all of the games, because the results for each game is separate to add together for your team's final score in the tournament. At the end of the round robin, the teams placed in third and fourth will play each other for third place and the teams placed in first and second will battle it out to win the cup! The new match-ups begin at exactly 12:00:01 am NST and the results from the previous day are declared here shortly after. Good luck!

Yooyuball Info

The popular Altadorian petpet, the yooyu, plays an imprtant role in the game of Yooyuball - the ball. Only the most healthy and fit yooyus are used in the tournament, so many yooyus have trained very hard to get a chance to play. There are a variety of different Yooyus used in the game, all with their own unique style. Players usually need to change their strategy when working with the different yooyus. These yooyus are:

Fire Yooyu:This Yooyu must be transferred very quickly between team-mates, since keeping it too long can result in some rather unpleasant burns.' It is, in my opinion, one of the easiest balls to use, as it's simple to control and travels fast so it is usually simple to get a goal from a long way out using up little time.

Snow Yooyu:This kind of Yooyu makes for a very slow ball, and its piercing cold slows the muscles of those playing with it.' Despite it's speed, this ball is the secondest easiest to use. Use short passes and when shooting try to stay close to the goalie otherwise he/she will have plenty of time to stop the goal.

Mutant Yooyu:This Yooyu is extremely unpredictable and will often move in crazy patterns. ' Try to use short passes so it won't curve. When shooting, stay close to the goalie like when using the snow yooyu.

Faerie Yooyu:This Yooyu floats lightly through the air, leaving players to wonder when it will drop down low enough for them to capture and pass it.' Use very short passes, and shoot from the center of the goal area and close to the goalie. It may not always go in this way first go, so you'll have to keep trying till it goes in.

Normal Yooyu:The most common form, this Yooyu behaves as you might expect without any effects. This is one of the easiest to use, and because it's normal, I don't really have any tips. It's got medium speed so I wouldn't try for long shots like the fire ball but it will go in from a far distance.

Darigan:A misbehaving Yooyu that flies askew from the direction the player is facing.' My least favourite yooyu, this is unpredictable and will go in many directions. I have trouble with it so I'll try and find some tips.

Clockwork:A wind-up robotic Yooyu toy that will explode within 10 or 15 seconds if it isn't put into a goal.' It is also known to explode in under 10 seconds. Act quickly to get a goal with this ball. But treat it like the snow ball, it isn't very fast, so shoot close to the goal. There is no penalty or points awarded if it explodes, it just starts a new ball. NEW: You can tell if it's about to explode when a red glow appears around it.

Scoring Details

I have included TNT's description of earning points in yooyuball to classify exactly how the scoring works for the Altador Cup.

Your contribution to your team's standings depends upon how well you play Yooyuball, with the calculation being based on the goal deficit for each game you play. If, for example, you send a winning score of 4 - 2, you will contribute 2 Yooyuball points to your team's daily score. If you send a winning score of 8 - 0, you will contribute 8 Yooyuball points to your team's daily score. Draws and losing scores are counted as zero Yooyuball points, so you definitely want to try to win.

So contrary to popular belief, do not send your losses, as it will not give your team any points despite your number of goals.

Tips & Strategies

1. Choose your formation. I usually use 2 2 but try them all out and find the easiest for you. Choose your direction of play. I go right-left but once again, find the easiest for you.

2. Press the spacebar to skip the launch of the yooyu. The launch uses up 10 seconds of your time. Pressing the spacebar doesn't stop the loss of this time, it just skips the animation.

3. Start by letting the opposition get the ball and pass it to one of their players. Then use your closest player to steal the ball. Travel up to the goal square and shoot. This strategy should work for most of the game.

4. If you miss the shot, move the closest player to the ball and press shift so the previous shooter can get back to its original position, and out of the way. Once your player has gotten the ball again, have another shot. Repeat this everytime you miss a shot.

5. For shooting, there are two different strategies you need to remember. For the fire, snow and mutant yooyus, travel up to the top corner of the goals (the goalie will follow you) and at the last second turn and shoot inside the other corner. The goalie won't have enough time to stop the yooyu, as he is too far away. With the snow and mutant yooyu, make sure you stay close to the goalie, but not too close or it will go straight to him.

6. When shooting with a faerie yooyu, travel to the center, straight in front of the goalie, with the ball on the second goal line. Shoot, and the ball will curve around and into the goals. You have to stand in that spot though because if you stand too close, the yooyu will go straight to the goalie, and if you're too far away, it will just curve outside the goals.

7. To get rid of that annoying player stealing the ball from you while shooting, do a circle around him which loses him, go on a bit of an angle from the goalie and shoot. If using faerie ball then stay facing the goalie.

8. If the opposition gets the ball and you aren't close enough to quickly steal the ball, take your control over to the goalie and get ready for the shot. By the time your player gets to the ball they would have passed and made a shot and you wouldn't have enough time to change to your goalie. You are more likely get the ball if you let them have a shot so your goalie can save it.

Staff Tournament

Sixteen members of the Neopets staff have been assigned a team, and each will compete in their own mini Altador Cup tournament! Choose who you think will take first, second and third place, and if you're right, you'll win a prize! Staff tournament rounds will coincide with regular tournament rounds, and the same match-ups that exist in the real tournament will be played out in our tournament. However, no staff scores will count towards the real tournament. TNT will tally up staff scores individually, and those scores will determine who stays and who goes in each round.

Cake's Team of the Week

Here I will put one team in the spotlight for a week. You will find out all about their players, strategies and how they're performing in the competition.

SHENKUU

While regarded by Altador Cup enthusiasts as an exciting young team with plenty of promise, the squad from Shenkuu is not expected make much noise in the tournament. They simply have too many holes: the inexperience of goalie Xana DiLanche, the unpredictable health of defender Turo Rafels, and the team's overall lack of tournament play are all serious concerns. On the other hand, it's hard to look at the stunning talent of young forwards Mirsha Grelinek and Foltaggio and not suspect that they might not have a few upsets in them...

Team Captain:

Name:Mirsha Grelinek

Species:Gnorbu

Position:Left Forward

Strengths:Scoring, Running Plays, Speed

Weaknesses:Consistency, Strength

Name:Foltaggio

Species:Mynci

Position:Right Forward

Strengths:Strength, Passing, Guarding

Weaknesses:Frustrated by expectations (his own)

Name:Larcy Phu

Species:Grundo

Position:Right Defender

Strengths:Tenacity, Craftiness, Tackling

Weaknesses:Dirty Play

Name:Turo Rafels

Species:Koi

Position:Left Defender

Strengths:Blocking, Passing, Leadership

Weaknesses:Injury-prone

Name:Xana DiLanche

Species:Lutari

Position:Goalkeeper

Strengths:Energy, Quickness, Good Hands

Weaknesses:Inexperience, Nerves

Shenkuu have been a real joy to watch in the tournament so far. Coming in to the competition, they weren't expected to win many games due to the team's inexperience. But Shenkuu has proved this theory wrong, winning many games even against very experienced teams such as Mystery Island, Lost Desert, Haunted Woods and even current leaders Krawk Island. They would have to be the most improved team this year starting out in 7th, 8th or 9th place and climbing up the ladder to 4th place where they currently stand. But will Shenkuu be able to keep this place to go through to the finals or will the close competition of Mystery Island and Lost Desert steal their glory.
