Things you should know about the Vailu Dragon.
1. Only one dragon lives on the earth at one time. When they are down to their last three scales, an egg is given to the dragon.
2. Each of their scales has the power to grant one wish.
3. Each scale is incredibly hard. They are nearly impossible to break, which provides excellent protection for young Vailu Dragons.
4. People spend years of their lives hoping to catch and imprison the dragon. If this happened, they could sell the scales for incredibly high prices. This also means that they would be able to have the dragon's egg. When the first dragon dies, the next will continue to have their scales sold. etc. blah blah blah.
5. The dragon's scales turn to sand once the wish is granted. The scales also turn to sand when the dragon is exposed to exactly three hours of sunlight.
6. Once every scale has been used, the dragon dies.
7. If a Vailu Dragon ever decides to use the scale on themselves, the dragon will die. This is to prevent the Vailu Dragon from living a selfish life.

A large dragon stood on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Her skin was the color of the summer sky and it had the smooth, rubbery texture of a dolphin. Her eyes were large and gentle, and one silver scale sat between them. The pale, pink and purple streaks of dawn were reflected by her scale and her body w The sun was just rising when she looked down at her claws and sighed. In them was an egg just large enough to fit into her hand. It was shiny and white with small orange flecks. In one graceful motion, she lowered her head and whispered to it.

Oh, Darling child. Fate has not been kind to you. My angel, cast from the heavens into an existence unfit to be called a life. You will be alive, dear one, but you shall never live. Land, trees, love, freedom... These things I've seen but never experienced, they will taunt you from beyond the shore. You will see them often. I cannot take that away. But I love you, dearest child, so I will do what I can.

The dragon curled up on the grass and pulled the egg close to her face. She cast a defiant look at the rising sun and pulled off her last scale. The egg cracked several times before a tiny face emerged. The baby dragon gazed up at her mother and appeared to smile. She was beautiful as well. Her eyes were incredibly large and emerald green, and her scales were the purest of white. Her mother smiled weakly and whispered to her child once more.

I wish more than anything that you get to experience life. I want you to feel love, freedom, and everything else that I was never able to have. Do not be bound by your scales, my love. You decide your own fate.

She cast one more defiant look at the sky before laying her head down on her hands.

Nayai...

She breathed. A smile slipped across her face as she took one last look at her daughter. She had done all that she was put on this earth to do. Nayai shook off what was left of her eggshell and pressed her body into her mother. When she didn't stir, Nayai felt a short pang of grief. She didn't know exactly who this dragon was, but she did know that she cared for her. Nayai stayed there a moment longer before she crept over to the edge of the cliff and jumped. Her body twisted gracefully like a ribbon in the wind until she hit the surface of the water below. It was her time, now.
