Alexandria Trescott Holt*

Sweltering heat isn't the best weather to stand around in. Glancing around, you spot what seems to be a quaint little coffee shop on the corner of the busy street. Hot drinks don't sound as appealing on such a scorching day, but this is the twenty first century. The invention of cold coffee drinks must have originated in a city like this, because, after all, this is the big city and everyone in the big city drinks coffee, right? It's certainly hot enough outside to justify a cold drink, even if it is a coffee product.
The bell above the door dings when you push through the threshold and into the shop. A blast of cold air hits you like a wall, and you sigh in relief. Glancing around, you notice that the shop isn't very busy. There is a balding, middle-aged man clicking away on his laptop at one of the tables in the corner, and a girl with her thin brown hair pulled up in a ponytail and her glasses sitting at the tip of her nose trying to study in one of the plush chairs on the opposite side of the room from the man. You noticed a college-aged boy disappear into the back room of the shop just as you walked in, but it doesn't look like he's going to give you any assistance.
You take up a seat at the bar, only to be welcomed by a young woman with long, thick, hair the color of pitch and eyes the color of the sky outside. She appears to be in her mid-twenties, but her eyes speak of wisdom that comes with age. If she's not in her mid twenties, she's in her early thirties.
She offers you a smile and says, Hello, can I help you?
You didn't really want a drink, simply to escape the heat. You shake your head, and she nods. I understand. This heat wave just won't break. Well, stay as long as you like." You smile and nod. The invitation sounds a lot better than braving the heat again. You strike up a conversation with the woman…

I first began working in the shop back before Ayla was born. I had just found out I was carrying Ayla when I went to work for Kevin. Zane and I had recently had a very messy break up, and I decided a job was the best way for me to take my mind off of him. I worked in the shop for two years until Zane crashed back into my life again. I never had any desire to quit, and Zane didn't seem to object. Besides, working with Kevin had placed a wonderful friendship between us. I love that shop like it's my own; mainly because now it is mine.
With Kevin and his family travelling the world, it's been up to me to run the coffee shop in his stead. The job is fun, and I can make my own hours. However, it didn't take me long to realize that running the shop on my own is difficult. I was forced to make the decision to hire someone to take orders and fill them. That's how I met Gavin.
He was eighteen when he walked into the shop and asked about the "Help Wanted" sign in the -blocked- He was looking for a job to help put him through college. I gave him the job because he looked capable and a little desperate. At first, the kid was totally useless. It seemed like every time I turned around I had to yell at him for something that he had screwed up. I took the cost of a new espresso machine out of his paycheck. For a long time, he was stuck with mopping floors and washing dishes and cleaning toilets. After a few months, he got up the nerve to ask me for more responsibility. I taught him how to work the register and how to take orders. I made the drinks myself. It was nearly a year before I could leave Gavin to work the front of the shop himself while I sat in the back and did paperwork. Last Christmas, I got him his own key to the shop.
Since then, he's become like an under-aged friend. He babysits the kids when Zane and I go out, he watches the house when we go out of town, and he can run the entire front of the shop by himself. Having him around has made it a lot easier to run the business. Sometimes I call Kevin to let him know how things are doing. I tell him not to come home and expect to get his business back, because I love it too much.

Love*

I am finding out that maybe I was wrong
That I've fallen down and I can't do this alone
Stay with me, this is what I need, please?

Sing us a song and we'll sing it back to you
We could sing our own but what would it be without you?

I am nothing now and it's been so long
Since I've heard the sound, the sound of my only hope

This time I will be listening.

Sing us a song and we'll sing it back to you
We could sing our own but what would it be without you?

This heart, it beats, beats for only you
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is yours
This heart, it beats, beats for only you
My heart is yours
(My heart, it beats for you)

This heart, it beats, beats for only you (It beats, beats for only you)
My heart is yours (My heart is yours)

This heart, it beats, beats for only you (Please don't go now, please don't fade away)
My heart, my heart is yours (Please don't go now, please don't fade away)

My heart is yours
My heart is yours
My heart is...

How do I describe Zane to you? He and I...we've been through it all. Anyone else, I don't think they would have made it through. There were times I thought we wouldn't make it through. There were many times I thought I would never see him again, times I thought he would never come back. But just when I would give up hope, there he would be. Back in my life. He was never really gone, and I never had reason to believe he didn't love me anymore. Zane has always come through when I really needed him. He has always been there for me and Ayla and Carter. I've never loved anyone like I love Zane. My feelings for him are endless, and he is my world. The father of my children. The love of my life. My best friend.

Children*

Ayla Marie - Ayla is my little miracle. Between Zane's absence and the trouble I had with carrying her, I was almost certain neither of us would make it. But she did, and even though she was born blind, she came out perfect. Now, she's a seventeen year old with a musical talent far beyond that of me and her father. She's Daddy's little girl, for sure. That girl has him wrapped around her little fingers and he melts at the simplest thing when it comes to her. Ayla is so well-behaved, so passionate about everything in life, I really hope she's doing okay while she's away at college.

Carter James - My darling little boy. The child that shouldn't have been. He is also a miracle, but in the sense that I wasn't supposed to be able to have another child. He caught us by surprise, that's for sure. I found out I was with child the night of Zane and I's wedding. Needless to say, there was no honeymoon, not until later on. Carter is such a sweet child, with such an adventurous nature. He is a happy child and can make friends with anyone. He's a momma's boy, for sure. Zane and I are proud of our little boy and his sister.

Pet*

Kayden
When Ayla was three years old, she came home from playing on the beach with a kitten, claiming she had just found it. It didn't have a collar, and it looked like she had been wandering around for a while, so we ended up keeping her. Ayla named her Kayden. Zane didn't like the idea of keeping the kitten at all. Zane hates cats with a passion, but, seeing as how it's impossible for him to say no to his daughter when she makes that puppy-dog face, Kayden became part of the family. I have to say, I enjoy keeping her around. Even though she's grown now, she still retains her loveable personality. She's good company when Zane and the kids are gone, she doesn't mess up the house, and she doesn't fight with Zane's dog, Denio. Sweetest cat ever.

Fosters*

Cree – Do you remember those kinda-reclusive kids in high school that were always making good grades and could befriend just about anyone who dared to get too close? Well, Cree's one of them. Except the grades part. She makes mediocre grades. She's an auto mechanics/English double major in college, and while she is friends with just about everyone she meets, she is an acquired taste. When she isn't captivated by the glow of the computer screen, she's busy studying or working to put herself through college. While she's very outgoing and loves to try new things, she's often very lazy and would rather sit on the computer all day. She loves her guild, and all of her friends. Her favorite hobby is roleplay, which she could literally sit around and do all day, but she can also be found clacking away on her computer in attempts to finish whatever story she is writing at the time, or stuffed up under any car that is in need of repairs. I guess I can't really complain much about her. She took me in and introduced me to my fosters, as crazy as they are. Cree's a trip, seriously.

Miiyo – I've never met anyone quite like her. She's always so kind and compassionate, though I know inside she is locked in turmoil. She is forced to spend her days running from her own immortality. She runs a large pack in a valley to the east, and I don't see her very often. I enjoy her company.

Aye – Oh goodness. Of all my adopted sisters, this one is probably most like me. She's got that "I'm too good for you" attitude, but not in such a way that it's annoying. She enjoys the finer things in life, but she's a very simple person. Personally, I wouldn't want to hang around her. She lives in a Victorian-style mansion with tons of servants who are too afraid of her to disobey her orders, and all she really wants to do is fly around with her translucent wings and play with her fan. Did I mention that she's a wind sorceress?

Zandetta – Ha, the pirate. I don't see her much, but even less now than I usually do. Something's going on with her, but I'm not quite sure what. Usually, she sails around the Atlantic with her crew and her ship and is content to do nothing else. Last I heard, she had met some guy in a port town…I hope she's okay. I like her company.

Friends*

Cyrus – Probably my best friend in the whole world. He's gotten me out of more scrapes, saved my backside so many times, and stuck by me through thick and thin. I love this guy. Really. He's like the (decent) brother I never had.

Fiearius – Do I have anything nice to say about him? He did save my life a few times. I did almost get him killed in a car accident. He did put up with me while we hunted down my sister. Do I have anything nice to say about him? Yeah, I suppose so. He's a pretty decent guy on the inside. He takes care of his own, you know? And I can respect that. Once you get past the rude, whiney exterior, he's like a big teddy bear.

Kevin and Kamren – These two have been there for me through thick and thin. Now Kevin, where would I be without this loveable bundle of joy? In a sadder state of life, that's for sure. He got me through the hard times after Zane left, and he got me through the harder times after Ayla was born. He gave me a job and helped me raise my daughter, and he became one of my best friends in the whole world. I love this guy. He's the one I would go to if I needed a large sum of money. But that's mostly because he's totally loaded in the pockets. He inherited his father's fortune after Zane…I mean…after his father mysteriously passed away. As for Kamren, when I first met her, I couldn't stand her very existence. I wanted her to die a horrible brutal death. Now that Zane and I are married, I couldn't ask for a better gal pal. She's sweet and funny, and she lets me drag her around town for shopping trips whenever I want. Zane likes that we're getting along now too, but I'm sure that's mostly because if I'm dragging her all over town for shopping trips, that means he doesn't have to go. She and Kevin got married some time after Zane and I did, and I made her and Kev the godparents of my children soon after that. I love these two.

Dwellings*

Many people ask me why I live on the beach if I'm in love with the city. It really is simple: I live on the beach because my husband loves the beach. I live on the beach because my daughter and son love the beach. I live on the beach because I have fallen in love with the beach.
The fast pace, the nightlife, the sights and sounds...the city is one of my favorite places in the world. It's where I met my loving husband, it's where I spent a majority of my young life, I love it.
The smell of salt water, the gentle breeze, The sun on your face, the feel of the sand between your toes...I love the beach. I didn't at first, but Zane's love for it rubbed off on me.
I couldn't tell you which one I love more. Both are home to me.
