I first began working in the shop back before Ayla was born. I had just found out I was carrying Ayla when I went to work for Kevin. Zane and I had recently had a very messy break up, and I decided a job was the best way for me to take my mind off of him. I worked in the shop for two years until Zane crashed back into my life again. I never had any desire to quit, and Zane didn't seem to object. Besides, working with Kevin had placed a wonderful friendship between us. I love that shop like it's my own; mainly because now it is mine.
With Kevin and his family travelling the world, it's been up to me to run the coffee shop in his stead. The job is fun, and I can make my own hours. However, it didn't take me long to realize that running the shop on my own is difficult. I was forced to make the decision to hire someone to take orders and fill them. That's how I met Gavin.
He was eighteen when he walked into the shop and asked about the "Help Wanted" sign in the -blocked- He was looking for a job to help put him through college. I gave him the job because he looked capable and a little desperate. At first, the kid was totally useless. It seemed like every time I turned around I had to yell at him for something that he had screwed up. I took the cost of a new espresso machine out of his paycheck. For a long time, he was stuck with mopping floors and washing dishes and cleaning toilets. After a few months, he got up the nerve to ask me for more responsibility. I taught him how to work the register and how to take orders. I made the drinks myself. It was nearly a year before I could leave Gavin to work the front of the shop himself while I sat in the back and did paperwork. Last Christmas, I got him his own key to the shop.
Since then, he's become like an under-aged friend. He babysits the kids when Zane and I go out, he watches the house when we go out of town, and he can run the entire front of the shop by himself. Having him around has made it a lot easier to run the business. Sometimes I call Kevin to let him know how things are doing. I tell him not to come home and expect to get his business back, because I love it too much.
