Under Construction

The Past as Remembered

Al lived on a quaint little farm with his family. He was the eldest of four and was soon getting ready to go to college. He had his whole life planned out after he graduated. He had a job waiting for him at a car garage and a house picked out after he got the savings. He was even in love with a beautiful girl. Everything seemed to be going well for him and he was content. Then all his dreams ended.

A great famine swept the land and the stock market crashed. The country was in panic. Jobs became scarce. Shops closed down and the price of food skyrocketed. During all this chaos, Al's parents kept a strong exterior. They didn't want to worry the children, trying to keep them out of concerning matters at a young age. Al wanted to be fooled by his parent's strong confident exterior. He wanted to believe the lie that everything was just a dream and he would go to college in the fall as though nothing happened. Yet deep down, Al could tell that they were worried and on occasion overheard heard his parents whispering concerns. Al desperately wished for a way out.

Relief came in the form for a yellow flyer that promised jobs and plenty of food in the west. Like so many others, Al's family gambled everything on this poster and traveled across the country in search of a bright new future that lay in the west. When they finally got to this "nirvana," they found a line of workers and few jobs. Everywhere they went there were numerous refugee camps. Most of the people who lived there were starving and dying but had no money left or the strength to travel.

His family made a living on low pay, picking fruit for five cents to ten cents a basket under a hot sun. This new life style was hard on his family and death soon collected Al's little sister and father. With his mother sick with grieving, Al became the head of the family and was thrown into a life of higher responsibility.

Just when they were on the brink of losing hope, a new vaccination was released that promised salvation. At first, people were wary of this proclaimed "miracle" potion. Like Al's family, most had been fooled by the golden flyers that had held the same promises that proved to be only empty ones. Free trials were given in hopes to sway the public. Those who took this new vaccination no longer felt tired at the end of the day. They became stronger then average and they could live off of small amounts of food and not feel hungry. Slowly, people began to buy the vaccination. Al's family was hesitant of the new vaccination. However, when they began to see positive results, with no side effects, they decided to buy Al an injection with the last of their money.

Everything went smoothly for a time and Al was able to work longer hours and found himself eating less....and less....

His family soon began to notice that something was wrong. Al's mind was constantly drifting in and out. Which effected his work. Sometimes he would be perfectly fine but other days he would stand hours in the fields doing nothing. His mind seem to be elsewhere, almost in a trance. It would have been fine if Al was just daydreaming. If he was just daydreaming, people could tell him to get back to work or ask if he was okay and he'd react. Yet when he got this way, he couldn't hear, feel or see anything going on around him. Al began to have fevers and terrible nightmares, sometimes when he wasn't sleeping. He thrashed and shouted at unseen terrors which frightened his family. Others who took the injected began to behave the same way, some acting more violent then others. Then came the day when everything was quiet. Hundreds of people fell unmoving. Al stopped breathing....and then he turned on his family.

Al doesn't remember anything from that day. Nor does he remember his past life. There's just a gap in his memory and an unexplainable sadness. Occasionally, he sees flashbacks of a monster (himself) eating his family, but is grieved to know he can do nothing to help them. At times he's watching the flashbacks from a safe distance but most of the time it's through the eyes of the monster.

Personality
There isn't much to say about Al's personality. What ever character he had, died the day he turned into a zombie. Al can remember little about his previous life and what he can remember seems alien to him. He repeats the motion of people he sees in his memory but doesn't quite understand them. One of the things he does remember, is that he used to live on a farm with his family. Al spends his time living forever in a loop and goes through all the motions of a living person. He does things such as sleep, eat, tend the farm and brush his teeth. He repeats the exact same motions everyday and only occasionally diverts from this routine. For example, the day he met Po. Al eventually added Po to his routine but still has days when it reverts back to the old system, forgetting Po. (When this happens, Po chases Al all over the yard and barks at him. He even bites Al's leg to try and get his attention. It doesn't work and Po just gets dragged all over the yard while he holds onto Al's leg.)

Al has long past his zombie phase and was replaced by the lingering memories from when he was alive. The cause of this was because, eventually, there were no more humans left to eat in his region, leaving Al with nothing. Since he was no longer constantly thinking about brains, it allowed him to recall some of his memories. His zombie nature is not gone however. It waits dormant, only activated when he smells blood or senses a living brain around. Until the day he finally senses brains, Al will live in his peaceful farm life with Po.

Life on the Farm

Al's house can barely hold itself together. It's creaky and leaky and has sections of fallen roof upstairs. There are bugs in every corner of his home and a family of rats living in his basement. Dust coats almost every surface and dirt covers the floor. The door has no lock so it bangs against the door frame every time the wind blows.

Outside, there is a small vegetable garden with a sad looking scare crow. The Scare crow's clothes have faded with time and he hangs limply from his pole. The veggies are filled with holes, over ripe and heavily bruised. Bugs and animals pay no attention to the sad scarecrow and enjoy the free feast that been spread before them. Across from the garden, is a small chicken coop. Two hens nest together, protected by its shelter. They seem to be better cared for then the garden. To the left of the coop is a huge field of white daisies. Along the border is a sign that says "stay out!" in red letters.

The Farm Dog

This little zombie mutt is Al's companion. Al discovered him one morning chewing vigorously on his skeletal arm. The mutt had wandered into Al's house looking for food and had found Al's arm dangling. Thinking Al's arm was a free meal, he clung on happily. Since then, Po has never left Al's side.

Al didn't name Po himself. Po got his name from a worn dog collar that Al found while taking a trip into an abandoned town. It took him awhile to realize what the collar was because he couldn't remember the object. When he found the collar, most of the letters were scratched out. The only letters left on the tag, however, were P and o. Thus the name Po was born.

Po is a scrappy thing who enjoys nothing more than following Al around. He follows with much enthusiasm, jumping and yipping around Al's long legs (Causing Al to stumble). When he's not getting into Al's hair, Po is constantly chewing on his limps and scratching his flea-ridden body. He's as gross as he looks and smells like death.

Po is a very loyal dog. This is good because Al can be very forgetful. For example, there was a time when Al forgot he owned a dog and didn't feed or allow Po inside for a few days. Al doesn't mean it but because of his lack of brains, he can't help it. Luckily, Po needs little maintenance and is just as spacey as Al. Po can't even tell when he's being neglected.
