Day152
Altena Promotion and Pink

All my hard work aboard Altena is finally paying off! Captain Adarezz has decided to promote me to Doctor in the ship's medical bay. I will miss Doctor Adria--the only Huma I've had the privilege to meet since Esfera's Awakening nearly 30 years ago. We have a similar past, her and I, and I hope that one day she'll be able to return to Esfera as a crusader of the modern universe, just as I hope to one day return to my home planet.

Last night the medical assistants and I put together a going-away party for Doctor Adria, which got a little out of hand. I woke up this morning with brightly dyed pink hair and styled eyebrows! My Izaran friends, who of course have no hair, had apparently goaded me into destroying mine! I need to find the formula for the dye they gave me so that I can return my hair to normal. I guess Doctor Adria had managed to keep a level head throughout the party because when I saw her this morning, her hair was still brown (the most common Huma hair color, as I've been told) and her brows were still shapely.

But enough rambling. Being promoted to Doctor means that I will be moving into Doctor Adria's old quarters, and will have round-the-clock access to the medical bay's lab equipment! I will finally be able to continue my father's research with the proper technology (in my spare time of course). Before I officially move in this evening, I'm going to need to Bliss-proof my new living quarters...who knows what he'd get into and either steal or destroy before I could even lay eyes on it. I've not met a more mischievous creature in all the centuries I've been alive.

Since my research will be picking up soon, I better start taking regular health stats to monitor any changes in my symptoms. So here goes:

Day154
Altena A warrior monk

I'm leaving this log entry after one of the longest days of my life; it is taking all of my concentration right now not to fall asleep here in the lab but I feel that today's events are noteworthy.

This morning the Altena stopped over for supplies at an Intergalactic Space Dock, and I was instructed to say my farewells to Doctor Adria and then peruse the market for supplies to replenish the medical bay. Not a few tears were shed between us and I couldn't help but wonder if I'd ever see her again...Huma lives are so short.

Afterwards, I set out to visit the merchants. It felt good to be off the Altena, to mingle with a myriad of intergalactic races again and see the newest fashions. I received several compliments on my pink hair--it seems neon bright colors are in vogue right now. Maybe this new hair color isn't all that bad. There did seem to be a down-side to my flashy appearance though--I believe it caught the attention of someone I'd rather not have seen me...another Ardoanna!

Ardoanna are fairly uncommon, and our features do stand us apart from other races--he likely would have seen me regardless of my hair color. He wore a hooded cloak that hid most of his face in shadow, and I could see the hilt of an Ardoanna Honor-blade near his shoulder--a monk maybe? It was his height and the hint of silver hair that gave him away as Ardoanna and not Huma. I could clearly see the effects of Chronic Astral Diffusion Syndrome; even from a distance I estimated the hand that he extended to examine a merchants' wares was probably at 60% corporal opacity. Although, if he was a monk, his transparency would be a mark of pride. We made brief eye contact from across the Bazaar before my fight-or-flight instincts kicked in and I decided to head back to the Altena at a brisque pace. As far as I could see, he did not pursue me.

Now my mind is racing. What was an Ardoanna doing at a Space Dock? Had he been sent by my father's enemies to hunt me down? Or was he really just a monk...with a sword? No use worrying about it I guess...the Altena will be leaving port tomorrow and I have no more need to leave the ship in the meantime.

Day155
Altena Sneaking suspicion

Summary: Trying to forget yesterday's scare, Aey absorbs herself in her research. She pieces together clues from ancient Ardoanna texts as to where Isteach may have truly originated. A patient arrives at the medical bay, and to Aey's dismay, she learns that the Monk has bought passage aboard Altena. She treats him, learning what she can about his intentions.

Day1
Intergalactic Space Dock Starting from scratch

Summary: Aey wakes up as a stowaway aboard the ISS after successfully sneaking off of Altena to distance herself from the Monk. Now, she must secure her position here by making herself useful or finding another ship to board.

Coming Soon!

Setting

Taeluna and the Universe
This story takes place in a future alternate universe. Things are much the same as they are here, but place names and history vary greatly. To give the reader a frame of reference, humans are known as Huma, and the planet they come from is Esfera.

Aey's race is known as the Ardoanna, and their planet is Taeluna. The Huma, Ardoanna, and Izara are known as the Alta Triad; three planetary races that closely share physical traits and are believed to originate from a common ancestor (although this is still unproven). There are many other sentient Intergalactic races, but none of them resemble each other as closely as these three.

The Intergalactic Community has existed for millenium, and is constantly expanding as more planets reach The Point of Awakening 1. Ardoanna were the first of the Alta Triad to Awaken, and their leaders have been influencing Intergalactic policies and government for centuries. Huma are the most recent to Awaken, only having discovered other planetary races about 35 years ago.

Taeluna itself has been through the gamut of natural disasters (several ice ages, periods of intense volcanic activity, meteor strikes, etc.) but the Ardoanna have also caused their fair share of damage to their planet's ecosystem. It is due to these environmental reasons that their race has experienced a rapid decline, but is also the reason that most other races leave Taeluna alone (there are not many readily obtainable natural resources left). At this point in history, 90% of the planet is covered in volcanic rock and lava. The planet's residents are confined to a verdant and idyllic sector called The Speira, a city built inside of an artificial biosphere. The Speira is renowned throughout the universe for it's beauty and orderly tranquility.

The Ardoanna Race
Compared to Huma, Ardoanna live an incredibly long time; their average life-span is about 1300 years. Due to several catastrophic events on Taeluna, the number of living Ardoanna throughout the universe is estimated to be only around 1215 individuals, and of those, about 860 still reside on Taeluna. Those who do not live on Taeluna are usually either monks, exiles, or ambassadors.

Ardoanna are thin, with very little muscle definition. That is not to say that they are a physically weak race--the difference is in their thick skin, which hides and smooths out most of their musculature. Males grow to an average height of 6'8", while females average about 5'6". All Ardoanna are characterized by their pale-silver hair and grey-blue skin. Ardoanna have blue Irises with three pupils in each eye. Out of the Alta Triad, the Ardoanna have the least contrast in appearances--any two unrelated Ardoanna may be mistaken for siblings by an outsider. Ardoanna are very hardy and can exist comfortably in a wide range of environments and temperatures (again, thanks to their thick skin).

To some, the most defining aspect of the Ardoanna is the peculiar phenomenon of Isteach 2, which some who live at the fringes of society refer to as Chronic Astral Diffusion Syndome (CADS).

Aey's Story (WIP)

And now, a bit about Aey's role in over-turning Ardoanna beliefs...Aey's story begins with her parents. Aey's father was an esteemed Ardoanna scientist-geneticist and her mother held a significant amount of political influence on Taeluna. Aey was raised in the high echelons of Ardoanna society with access to the finest education money could buy. Both parents were pious, and spent their daily allotted time in meditation--as is the custom once an Ardoanna begins Isteach. As sometimes happens to certain Ardoanna, Aey's mother seemed to progress through Isteach much faster than others. Because of his love for her and fear of losing her, Aey's father began forbidden research into finding a way of slowing down and even eradicating Isteach.

During these dark years of Aey's young life, her father spent days at a time with his research--often experimenting on himself in search of answers, while her mother grew more and more distant as her Isteach progressed. At times, her mother would seem as if in a trance that would last for hours, and other times it was as if she had forgotten everything and everyone that was important to her. And of course, she was fading--on some days her mother was so transparent Aey could not even hold her mother's hand or hug her for comfort. At school, Aey's teacher would explain that Isteach is a blessing and that her mother must be very special to be so affected by it. But at home, Aey would overhear her father muttering about 'cures' and 'disease' over his research.

Over the years, her mother's Isteach seemed to slow it's progress and her father's research habits returned to normal. Monks pondered over the sudden recovery and instructed Aey's mother to spend more time meditating in order to continue with Isteach. Oddly, Aey's father showed no signs of progression at all. Years passed this way and Aey's family lived a seemingly normal life. Behind closed doors though, suspicion was brewing amongst the monks in regards to her father's past research.

On Aey's 190th name day, everything changed. Her father woke her before dawn with a mysterious gift: an exquisite hair-pin which he quickly fastened in her long straight hair before three masked men threw a blind over her head and she was taken away from her family's home and, over the course of several days, off of Taeluna to an Izara space station. As she learned later, her father had hired the men in order to save her; her parents had been detained minutes after her abduction, and her father imprisoned for heresy. She never learned of her mother's fate, but it is presumed that she succumbed to Isteach years later. Aey was now a wanted person on Taeluna, suspected of having in her possession heretical research documents. To Aey's knowledge, she was innocent.

On the Izara space station, Aey's education at an Ambassador school payed off--when she arrived, she could already speak basic Galun* and was familiar with their culture and customs. Aboard ship, she made herself useful by volunteering in the medical bay where she received a hands-on introduction to science and medicine. In her free time, Aey tirelessly researched her parents in hopes of discovering some clue as to what her father's research had revealed. Desperate for answers, she decided to examine his mysterious name-day gift. It didn't take long to discover that the 'semi-precious stones' that decorated the clip were actually Cipher Crystals*. Unfortunately Cipher Crystals are purely an Ardoanna technology so the equipment needed to read the crystals was not available on the Izara ship. Over the course of several years with the Izara, Aey finally managed to get her hands on the proper Ardoanna technology and was able to read the crystals. It was her father's research journal.

The rest is history. Aey read the journal and decided to continue her father's research, and by doing so, go against everything she was taught and raised to believe about Isteach. She would be forced to live in exile forever--and forever could truly mean 'until the end of time' if her father's predictions were right. And so began her research into the disease that her father had named Chronic Astral Diffusion Syndrome. A disease so ancient among the Ardoanna that it had become myth, and so absolute that it had become accepted as fate. Aey, was going to overthrow Isteach forever. As long as her enemies didn't find her first...

Quick Ref

Aey

Appearance: Aey has typically colored Ardoanna skin (grey blue). Her hair color and style changes frequently depending on her mood and current trends. She almost always sports a style with bangs though. Usually, Ardoanna wear very tight clothing, but Aey prefers baggy styles and since she's not living amongst Ardoanna any more, she pretty much wears whatever she wants or whatever clothing is available; lab coat, uniforms, etc. Aey is short by Ardoanna standards; roughly 5'3". She is about 280 years old (which is the equivalent to a 21 year old in Huma years).

Because she is so young, she has not experienced any of the drastic symptoms of Chronic Astral Diffusion Syndrome yet. However her body is losing opacity in some places (extremities like her hands and feet).

Personality: Aey is sociable and outgoing, although she doesn't always conform with popular culture. She is a tad bi-polar; sometimes she can come off as cute, bubbly, and overtly nerdy and at other times she is listless and cold (usually when she is thinking about her family).

Aey is very intelligent, and her experiences as an exile have made her 'street smart' as well. She has become very proficient at 'hacking' old technology to serve her needs (because new, state-of-the-art technology is hard to come by). She is fluent in all of the Alta Triad languages and can speak several others as well. She considers herself part anthropologist--she loves experiencing other intergalactic cultures and is always open to trying new things so that she can learn more about a race.

Bliss

This is Bliss, Aey's companion/side-kick. Bliss has the demeanor of a cat or a fox (self-centered, inquisitive, playful, aloof at times), and the hoarding tendencies of a crow (tends to collect shiny odds-and-ends). Bliss is often causing trouble around her lab (stealing medical instruments and hoarding them in niches around the station). He does, however, make himself useful by performing menial tasks and errands for Aey such as simple purchases, fetching tools, delivering notes, etc. He is primarily nocturnal, so unless Aey needs him to do something, he is usually draped or curled around her neck like a scarf or sleeping in his hammock (which Aey keeps in her office).

Aey is often annoyed with Bliss, and scolds him frequently. But underneath her disapproval is a deep fondness. Perhaps they butt heads because their personalities are so similar--although you'd never hear Aey admit that.

Origins: for about 10 years after her exile (as a young-adult), Aey lived on Rythius (a tropical planet home to a myriad of beautiful and deadly species). Before leaving to board Altena, her host family gifted her an extremely rare bird known as a Glasian to keep as a pet. Unfortunately the life-spans of these birds are only around 10-15 years. When Aey's first bird (named Vibrance) died, she decided to 'immortalize' her pet through cloning (a fairly common practice in the intergalactic community). With each Glasian clone she creates, she tweaks a few genes so that no two pets come out identical. Bliss is Aey's 22nd Glasian.

Appearance: Hawk-like head and beak, typical bird body. Legs are feline and tail is furred rather than feathered. The tail functions like a flying-squirrel's. These birds are not designed for soaring and diving; they prefer to run and hop on the ground or along tree-limbs. Glasians are characterize by leopard-like spots around their heads and along their tails. Colors vary from midnight-blue to bright teal.

Terminology (WIP)

1 The Point of Awakening is the discovery of the intergalactic community through scientific advancement and space exploration; first contact with other sentient beings originating from another planet.

2 Isteach is the belief that the gradual disintegration of the body (scientifically attributed to Chronic Astral Diffusion Syndrome) is a continuation of life via a rejoining of nature and reintegration with Taeluna.

Galun is the language of the Izara.

Cipher Crystals are lab engineered stones that can store data much like the Huma technology called a memory chip.
