Sometimes, your deepest fears can haunt you forever.
Sometimes, you never want to let the past go.
Sometimes, you wish you could remember.
Sometimes, you wish you couldn't.
A faint sound is audible as the crests of the waves below break against the rocks. The sky is beautiful tonight, you note, the stars visible, for once not hidden behind a humid mask of fog. A crescent moon graces the sky, reflecting against the waters. There is something...nostalgic in the air. It is like a dream, a hazy reality, up on this cliff, alone on a crisp and clear night. However, it seems you are not alone. A dark shape on the edge of the cliff, back to you, gazes out onto the waters, as if in waiting. Without knowing why, you walk the few short steps to join the lone figure.
The stars are sad tonight.
a calm voice, yet full of something...deeper. Like the chiming of bells.
How can you tell?
you find yourself inquisitive at her vauge statement. She turns her eyes on you and you find yourself transfixed. Blackest pools of ebony, hiding a deep, indistinguishable feeling, just below the surface. You notice she is smiling, but a sad, sad smile. Like one who has experienced pain beyond their years. A wise and deep acceptance.
They speak to me," she says, turning back to the moon, effectively snapping you out of your breif reverie.
They are sad because I am sad. They are my friends, the only ones I have.
By now you wonder how one creature could harbor so much pain, and hide it with ease.
It is all right though, I am happy with just the stars. They are calming.
This time, she gives you a genuine smile, or tries to. She seems like she hasn't smiled in a very long time.
No words needed to be spoken at this perfect moment, but you knew they had to.
Tell me your story.
She turns again to you, as if searching your soul, your very core. After an eternity, she sighs, looks out over the waters again, and sighs.
I was born in a beautiful place...
Oh, she's beautiful!" The warm face of her mother peered over the blankets at her child.
A second voice added "What shall we name her?
The mother was silent for a moment, deep in thought.
She smiled at her child.
Aemue." she said, turning to look at whomever the voice belonged to.
Leaning over the child, she whispered "Hope...
We were in an era of peace, a golden age. Everything was perfect.
At this point, she pauses, her eyes filled with intense sadness.
Then, the unthinkable happened.
Alert the king! They're breaking through the grand wall! Get them out of there!
A commander yelled orders at his troops. A neighboring country had suddenly and without warning broken the peace treaty, the moment they landed a blow on the great wall that surrounded the city.
Sir, what are they after?" asked a soldier.
The commander grimmaced.
The princess," he stated, somewhat numb by this time.

The scene inside the royal palace.
The enemy, by this time, had advanced and was using a tree uprooted from the gardens to try and bash in the front gate of the palace, which lie in the center of the city. Inside, the king and queen were having a heated argument.
Young Aemue, clutching her star plushie, looked over the events as only the eyes of an innocent child can. She was surprised when she heard the gate groan and finally fall outside.
She was confused when her mother, crying profusely, picked her up and hugged her as if she'd be going somewhere.
She was crying as they pushed her through the secret star-shaped back door to the palace and told her to be a good girl, hanging a small golden chain about her neck.
The last thing she saw before the door clanged shut was her parents turn to face the intruders. Then they were gone. And she was alone. It was a cold night. Colder than usual. The stars themselves wept that night, wept for all things wrong in the world.
I ran," she says simply.
I ran all night, ran until my legs gave out, then curled into a ball from exaustion and greif.
I traveled after that. Became a theif, stealing what food I could get. When I became of age, I began doing odd jobs, a merchant here, an herb gatherer there. I was living alright.
Here, she paused.
I missed my parents every day. Missed my life, my life before it was ripped from under me and thrown out the window.
At this point, she lowers her head.
At some time during my travels, I wandered back to my kingdom, my homeland.
She lowers her eyes.
Nothing...nothing left but...charred buildings and ruins.
I think...I stayed there awhile, not wanting to believe it. Not wanting to move on. But we all must move on. Both for our family and ourselves.
Then, she gives a real, genuine smile.
My people are beginning to rebuild. I will aid in the effort as much as I can. I believe I owe it to them.
She fingers the pendant around her neck.
I will guide them. Through the darkness, through the light. I will be...their hope.
