Welcome!

Hello there! My name is Light, and I'd like to welcome you to Beneath the Lights, a complete guide to customizing your Neopets. Here, you can browse through multiple topics such as cross-painting, Paint Brush alternatives and more! In addition, you will find premade customizations, and you can even request your own!

Beneath the Lights first opened its wardrobe doors on March 14, 2013 and has been aiding Neopians in their customisation woes and worries ever since.

Getting Started

What is customising?

Customising is dressing your Neopet up, in 'wearables'- items your Neopet can wear. Wearables can be actual clothing, backgrounds, foregrounds, even music, and can be bought with either Neopoints or Neocash. Neopoints are the Neopets virtual currency that you can earn in-game, and NP wearables can be bought through the Shop Wizard, Trading Post, user shops or Auction House. Neocash is paid for with real-life money, at the NC Mall or via Nickelodeon cash cards from various shops. To see where you can purchase NC Cards in your country, go here.

An item is wearable as it will display (wearable) in blue underneath its picture, like below.

So I how do I go about creating an outfit?

Creating an outfit that looks good is often suprisingly easy. Just follow these simple steps, and you'll be on your way!

  1. Pick your pet. Obviously to create an outfit you will need a pet to customise it on. Any pets can be dressed up, however some have limits.
  2. Choose your theme. Once you have your pet, you need to choose the theme you'd like your outfit based around. Do you want it pink and girly, underwater, on a Pirate ship? There are endless possibilities and the more creative and unique the better.
  3. Pick your budget. How many Neopoints are you prepared to spend on this outfit? The larger the budget, usually the better, as you have a wider range of wearables, however you can create great outfits with very little neopoints, if you use your imagination.
  4. Top tip! If you are a little low on funds, try visiting the Neopian Second-Hand Shop, for free wearables that have been donated by other users.

Also, think about whether you can afford to spend real-life money on Neocash, even if it's only a little. Setting yourself a budget, both Neopoint and Neocash, will make it easier for you to choose which items you can and can't put into your outfit.

  5. Choose your wearables. So you have your pet, theme and budget. All you need now is the wearables you are going to make your outfit with! I find using Jellyneo's Item Database is a great place to start. Make sure to set the 'special category' to 'Wearable' before you start. To learn how to find wearables that match your theme, visit my Finding matching wearables section.
  6. Purchase your items. Now you know the wearables you wish to use, you need to buy them- either from the Shop Wizard, Trading Post or NC Mall.
  7. Add them to your Closet. You will not be able to dress your pet in an item if it's not in your Closet. You can put an item into your Closet by clicking on the item in your inventory, and selecting 'Put into your Closet', or via the Quick Stock option. To start customising, you need to get to your Closet, click here or do one of the following-
  8. (Drag to the top of your screen to enlarge)

  9. Dress your pet. Once you have your wearables and put them in your Closet, you're ready to dress your pet! To start, you need to be at the Customising screen. Get here by one of the following methods:

To start, click on an item you wish to add to your pet, and select 'Apply'. Play around with wigs, dresses, backgrounds and trinkets such as foregrounds, garlands, showers and music tracks, until you have an outfit you like. Certain foregrounds and clothing items can be layered over one another, so don't forget to try that! To save your finished outfit, make sure you click the 'Save Changes!' button.

And there you have it! One finished outfit, congratulations! The more you practice and experiment with customisation, the better your outfits will become. If you're like me, over time you'll also amass a great deal of wearables in your closet that will give you a much freer range.

Be original; don't be afraid to take risks or experiment with new colours or themes. Every customiser makes mistakes once in a while, it just takes time to figure out your style and technique.

What is the difference between Neocash and Neopoint wearables?

Not much- they can both be used to customise pets. Neocash wearables generally have animations and sharper, prettier colours in most cases. Neopoint wearables also tend to be just foregrounds, trinkets and backgrounds- the vast majority of Neopoint wigs and clothing items are species specific. However, Neopoint wearables can be just as nice when used with the right outfit, and of course they are better in the fact that they do not cost real money, so are perfect for people that perhaps don't have the funds to purchase Neocash.

How do I find matching wearables?

As I'm sure most avid customisers would agree, outfits look best when paired with matching wearables- similar themes or colours, rather than just throwing whatever on without any plan. One way to find similar items is by using Jellyneo's Item Database. Pick an item or two you'd like to be in the outfit. For this example, I'd like to find wearables to fit with my item 'Royal Girl Kacheek Dress' for a Spring Shenkuu theme. In the database, I make sure the 'special category' is set to 'Wearable', and I search for keywords.

Top tip! If you have no access to Neocash, and would like no NC wearables to come up, check the box 'No NC items' when searching.

First, I search for 'Shenkuu'. I've decided I like the look of the 'Misty Shenkuu Background', so I now have my Background. I also like 'Shenkuu Cloud', so I add that to my outfit.

Next, I pick aspects out of the background that I like. For instance, in this case, I'd like something Woodland-y, to bring out the trees at the back. After searching for 'Woodland', I find the 'Woodland Archer Bow', and that goes into my outfit as the hand-held item.

So, I now have my background, dress and hand-held item. To finish off with I'd like to find something pretty to go on top of my pets head. Since the outfit is supposed to be a little mystical Springtime, I search for 'Spring'. The 'Spring Flower Head Wreath' fits perfectly and finishes off the outfit nicely.

Top tip! Use sites such as Dress to Impress to find out what wearables will look like on your pet before purchasing.

That hopefully should give you an idea of how to find matching wearables. To sum up:

  • Search for similar themed words: e.g for a Outer Space outfit, I could search for 'Planet' 'Moon' and 'Star'.
  • Pick out aspects you like from current wearables in your outfit. Search for items related to that.
  • Don't be afraid to be different and look outside the box! If you'd like a Summer outfit, don't limit yourself to just items with 'Summer' in its name.

What is the best pet to customise?

Not all pets can be customised fully. Unconverted pets, and pets painted in the colours Baby, Mutant, Maraquan, Invisible and fruits/vegetables are limited to what they can wear. They can wear backgrounds and trinkets such as foregrounds and showers, but not hand-held wearables, body outfits or items worn on the head such as contacts, wigs and hats.

My favourite pet to customise is the Kacheek. Because of their upright posture and simple artwork, they are easy to work with. The White Kacheek is widely renowned as the ultimate customisation base. I do agree, the White colour acts as a complete blank base and goes with pretty much everything. Think of them as the jeans of customisation pets. I also enjoy customising Royal and Brown/Christmas Kacheeks, and I find most Aishas and Draiks make great bases also.

However, that is not to say all other species are hard to customise! Wearables look different on every pet, they will look lovely on some species, but maybe a little silly on others. The best way to find out is to play about a little- change up the species, paint job, wearables of your pet and see what works best for you. Be original, don't pick items just because they are popular or expensive. Often, you can create a beautiful outfit that costs a total of under 10,000np.

What are species-restricted wearables?

Species-restricted (or species-limited) wearables can only be worn by one certain species. For example, the 'Kacheek Pyjama Gown' could only be worn by Kacheeks, the 'Evening Draik Gown' only by Draiks. You can usually tell if a wearable is species-restricted as it will have the name of the species in it's title, for example the 'Pretty Wocky Snow Gown', 'Aisha Rain Hat' and 'Flying Pteri Tan' are all species-restricted items. If you're not sure, use sites such as the Jellyneo Wardrobe Preview or Dress to Impress to check.

Final words of advice

To summarise this section up, here are some final words of advice before you go venturing into the deep and dark (but also fun!) land of customisation.

  • Be original, don't be afraid to take risks or experiment with new colours or themes. Every customiser makes mistakes (more than we care to admit), it just takes time to figure out your style and technique.
  • You don't necessarily need to spend a fortune. I've seen many a great outfit that were bought with zero NC and very little Neopoints.
  • If you're not having fun, stop. A customisation is at its best when the user has put time and effort into it, not just thrown things on slap-dash. Care is the most important key to a great outfit. It will show if you have put some thought into it- a colour scheme, underlying theme, even humour.

Cross Painting

What Is Cross Painting?

Certain Paint Brush colours come with clothes. For example, if I painted my female Kacheek with a Royal Paint Brush, the Royal Girl Kacheek clothes (Royal Girl Kacheek Dress and Crown) would go into my closet. These wearables are called Paint Brush clothes and are unremovable from your closet. Many colours provide these clothes, such as Royal, Desert, Christmas and Island.

Cross Painting is when you paint your pet in one colour that provides clothes, for example Christmas, and then paint over it with another colour, say Eventide. The end result would be a pet painted Eventide, but wearing the Christmas clothes. Neopians cross-paint to make their pet look more unique or to generally expand their wardrobe.

The colours that, depending on the species, may provide paint brush clothing are: Alien, Baby, Christmas, Disco, Halloween, Lost Desert, Mystery Island, Pirate, Robot, Royal and Zombie. Please note that these wearables are species specific, and can only be worn by that one species. Baby paint brush clothing is also colour specific, meaning they can only be worn by that one species, if they are painted Baby.

Creating A Cross Paint

First, bring up a wardrobe app. You can use Jellyneo's but personally I prefer Dress to Impress. Once at your chosen site, bring up the pet you'd like to do a cross-paint on. In the search bar, type in the species of your pet. This should bring up all the paint brush clothing that species has to offer, as well as other wearables related to that species. To separate paint brush clothing from standard wearables, make sure the item has a name of a PB clothing colour in it. For example 'Christmas Kacheek Hat' and 'Disco Kacheek Glasses' are paint brush clothing, while Kacheek Pyjama Gown' is not.

Note: There are some exceptions to this. The 'Pink Kacheek Bathing Cap' is not paint brush clothing, even with the colour in its name. If you're unsure, find the colour at the Rainbow Pool and see if the pet is wearing that item of clothing.

If there is a set of clothes you would like to include, add it to your wardrobe. If nothing catches your eye, try adding all the paint brush clothing for that species into your wardrobe, and experiment.

Once you have decided on the paint brush clothing you'd like to use, you need to choose your base. Put the clothing on the pet in your wardrobe application, and keep changing the colour of your pet. Choose a colour that goes with the theme or colours of the clothing. In the example below, I chose the Royal Girl Kacheek clothing to cross paint with a Biscuit base, because I like the pink, brown and gold scheme. When choosing your base/clothing combination, I find that the best cross paints are matched in colour scheme, or story theme (e.g Halloween and Zombie are a good pair).

^ Drag to the top of your screen to enlarge

Now you've chosen your base and clothing colour, the hard part is out of the way. Just follow these three steps and you're finished!

  1. Paint your pet in the colour you'd like the clothes of. The clothes will go automatically into your closet. For my example I would paint my pet Royal.
  2. Now paint your pet with your base colour. In my example this would be Biscuit.
  3. Customise your pet with the paint brush clothes. And viola! That's it, you're done! Simple, right?

Remember! The colour Royal is a little different to other clothing colours. There are a set of clothes and possibly a different base for each gender. Make sure your pet is the gender you'd like the clothes of before painting.

Alternative Painting

We all have that one dream colour that we love and drool over, that we know is just perfect for out pet. However, if you're like me, you'll often be short of funds and just can't afford that expensive paint job. Well my friends, I have a solution. Luckily for us, TNT often create paint/species combos that look eerily similar to another one. However, these paint brushes may be much cheaper. Introducing, alternative painting. Below a list of combos that have a cheaper alternative. If one says + wings or + clothes it means that they would be even more similar by adding wings/clothes. If you have a suggestion for another alternative, please mail me!

  1. Please remember to link back- on your pets lookup, petpage or wherever you will use your request. A simple button or text link is sufficient.
  2. If you ever lose your request, feel free to mail me as I will have it saved somewhere.
  3. I will make outfits for as many pets as you would like, within reason, as long as requests are open. Include 'Quidditch' in your form.
  4. If you don't like your finished request, please tell me! Honestly, I will not mind. In fact I'll rather you did as it means you will be happier with your request.

Not much of a blog entry, but I'd like to finish off with a warm congratulations to PF of Iridescent, who celebrated their 1 year anniversary a courple of days ago! If BtL ends up even close to the standard of that amazing site, I will be one happy girl.

I promise there will be a better blog entry soon XD

Customising with Limited Pets

Some pets cannot be customised fully. Unconverteds (pets that were not converted into the new artwork in April 2007), Mutants, Babies, Maraquans, Invisibles and Fruit Chias are types of pets known as 'Limited' pets and can only wear specific types of wearables. There are exceptions, for example Baby pets have their own Wonderclaw machine, and Maraquan Mynci's are fully customisable due to their posture.

Some may think that because their pet is one of these Limited pets that they are uncustomisable and you have to leave them bare. This isn't correct- backgrounds, foregrounds, trinkets, showers, garlands and music tracks are all wearable by this type of pet. The only wearables they can't wear are handhelds and on-body clothing such as wigs and dresses.

If you plan your outfit and piece the right things together, these limited pets can be easy to customise. Below are some outfits I've created to give you some examples of customised limited pets.

Closet Staples

Many of us, be it either because of a financial or personal situation, can only customise with Neopoints. Meaning these precious points need to be invested and spent wisely, not on an item that costs 2 million NP that you'll only ever use once. So I've comprised a handy little list of NP wearables that will become closet staples because of their amazing cheapness or versatility. I definitely recommend every customiser has at least 10 of these in their closet.

Beneath the Lights History

Beneath the Lights was under construction for a long time, mainly based on the fact that I am a complete procrastinator and perfectionist (terrible combination). With the help of hot chocolate, determination and the amazing Studio members, Beneath the Lights finally opened on Thursday 14th March.

We are still a new site and I am still learning the ropes, but loving every second of being a site owner- plus the rewards and newly gained knowledge that come with it. Hopefully as time passes we will progress and expand. Here's to a (hopefully!) successful future for Beneath the Lights.
