SPECIAL NOTICE
12/09/2007: Four new affiliates have been added. Make sure you check out Ellemdee's Helpful Links for many guides on many things. Malorie also has a wonderful directory called Places to Be with a beautiful layout that is sure to help anyone. Along with those two, Min has a wonderfully comprehensive dailies guide that I use myself and it's AMAZING. So...use it! Need a guide? Morgan's Guide to Guides is the page you need.I have also added a few more testimonials to the site as well as a survey located on the sidebar. Would you do me the favor? (:
12/07/2007: Another affiliate has been added. As a supporter and writer for the Neopian Times, I have the personal privilege of promoting (how's that for assonance?) a wondeful project called the Neopian Times Awareness Act. Please check out Squiesh's page and be sure to read the current issue of the Neopian Times!
11/23/2007: We have reached our first 1,000 hits! Slow going, I know, but thank you to all the faithful supporters of this page.
Let me know what you think by rating this page (preferably using a scale of 1 to 5, decimals or non)! All ideas to better this page are welcomed and appreciated! Also, pick up a new button located on the side of the page if you'd like to help support this page.
I need confirmation about the Illusen/Jhudora quests. While it is understood that they ask for unbuyables many times, do they ever ask for special/Hidden Tower items (such as paintbrushes, dubloons, etc.)? Please send me a message if you can confirm or disprove this. Thank you!
INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Questing Essentials. This page is dedicated to helping you understand and take full advantage of the many quests found in Neopia. Updated as often as possible and with many additions to come, the goal of Questing Essentials is to become one of the most comprehensive questing guides out there. Links have a pink dashed border that will highlight pink on mouseover. Important information is highlighted. If you are looking for a general understanding of the quests, please start here and continue to scroll on through the sections. If you are looking for something specific, press Ctrl + F to search for it. To bookmark this page, please press Ctrl + D.
QUESTS
As a general definition, a quest is a search for something specific such as an item or information. Quests can be chosen or random, inconsequential or important, pricey or inexpensive, timed or free. The difficulty of a quest can vary by character and level. Most quests can be cancelled with little or no consequence (however there are exceptions). In total there are nine random untimed quests and seven voluntary timed quests. Two quests are based on level, three have a hi-score table, and three are avater-related.
As a guide, these icons will be placed next to the name of the character accordingly:

FAERIE QUESTS
There are a total of twelve faerie quests available to you: nine random and three voluntary. The prizes for completion can be statistic boosts, items, or nothing (depending upon the level. Ten of of the twelve can be cancelled or failed with little to no immediate consequences. Be wary when failing to complete the remaining two.
Random Faerie Quests
[?]
These quests are often highly coveted, especially by those who frequent the battledome. This is because the reward for completing one of these quests is always a statistic boost. Depending upon the faerie, this could mean boosts in multiple statistics.
The table below indicates the faerie, items asked for, and the reward.
![]() Name: Fire Faerie Items: Clothes Reward: Increase in Strength (+2) |
![]() Name: Light Faerie Items: Collectable Cards Reward: Increase in level (+1) |
![]() Name: Earth Faerie Item: Magic Items Reward: Feeds pet until bloated, heals pet, and adds one pound to pet |
![]() Name: Air Faerie Item: Grooming Items Reward: Increase in movement (+2) |
![]() Name: Dark Faerie Item: Toys Reward: Increase in maximum hit points (+2) |
![]() Name: Water Faerie Item: Books Rewad: Increase in defence (+2) |
![]() Name: Queen Fyora (Faerie Queen) Items: Usually expensive - click here) Reward: Raises level (+1), maximum hit points (+3), and strength (+3) |
![]() Name: Space Faerie Items: Furniture, TCG cards, Faerie dolls, battledome items, etc. (click here for more) Reward: Increase in level (+4). |
![]() Name: Fountain Faerie Item: R94-R96 item (click for specifics) Reward: Access to the Rainbow Fountain to paint one pet Go here for an in depth guide. |
While most of the rewards are good, some discernment must still be used. For example, the earth faerie will simply makes your pets full. Instead of paying for some expensive magic items, get some of the free daily food or place your pets in Neolodge. For minimum of 140 Neopoints per pet, your pets could be bloated for 28 days.
The most expensive random faerie quests are the quests for Faerie Queen, the Space Faerie, and the Fountain Faerie (be careful not to confuse her with the Water Faerie). These costs can rise steeply, but are usually worth it the price you pay for the item asked for.
Please remember that these quests are random, but they are not timed. That means you can spend two years earning the Neopoints to buy that item the Fountain Faerie wants; your quest will never expire unless you cancel it by going to the Faerie Quests Building.
Unfortunately, the random faerie quests hold the greatest restrictions. You cannot choose when you receive the quest, which faerie gives you the quest, or which pet the faerie blesses. Everything is completely random and there is no way to increase or decrease your luck for a quest or specifc faerie. While on the quest, access to the Shop Wizard will be denied. While that is the main source of item apprehension, there are methods to get around this.
Method 1: Use another search engine.
Sometimes, the item can be found by using the Neopets shop search, the Trading Post, or the Auctions. However, this method is not always reliable.
Method 2: Bookmark a specialty mega mall.
Some mega malls (gigantic user shops combined) specialize in faerie quest items. By bookmarking these malls, you will have access to a wide variety of items. Below is a list of a few mega malls. Be cautioned, however. Many mega malls items are overpriced and usually only include items for the six basic faeries.
Method 3: Ask a Neofriend.
This method has become much easier now that Neopets has added a Neofriends module that lets you see which Neofriends have been online recently. Send them a friendly note, asking them to search for your item on the Shop Wizard. They can then send you a few usernames and prices. If they're having a really good day, they may just buy the item for you!
If none of your friends happen to be online at the moment, you can check my online status here. If I am online_ send me a message and I'll do my best to help.
Method 4: Use another account.
Since the Shop Wizard is blocked on the account the quest has been given to you, simply switch to a side/guild/gallery account and search for the item there. Then, switch back to the quest account and complete the quest.
Don't have a spare account? Click here to make a new one. You are allowed up to four spare accounts and one main account. Please click here for the official guidlines by Neopets.
Method 5: Use the Quest Board.
This is an extremely popular method when it comes to random faerie quests. Usually, this board has a few helpful people willing to search for your item and give you three shops or so that hold it. To go about using this efficiently, here are some guidelines I would suggest:
- Start by creating a New Topic. For efficiency, simply write the item name (no quotes) in the title box. Be sure you spell it correctly.
- For the topic message, be sure to include a please and thank you somewhere. It's courteous and appreciated by all helpers. Stay away from ANY kind of begging. It won't get you help faster.
- After you create your new topic, simply wait. Do not bump your board. Doing so will cause you to be skipped. When Quest Board helpers look at the posts, they tend to generally look for the ones with "0" as the number of replies. So just be patient, no matter how far your board goes down the page.
- If your board goes off the first page, it's okay. Just try again. But, don't crowd the Quest Board with a million posts for a Fire Jug.
When you are answered by a Quest Board helper, the reply may look something like this:
username Midnight Eyeshadow 4 106 NP
username Midnight Eyeshadow 1 109 NP
It looks confusing, but it's really not.

Be sure to say please and thank you to the helper(s) that assists you!
Here is the Quest Seekers F.A.Q. This is not by me. I have asked permission from one of the original authors to put this on my page for your viewing. This F.A.Q. is by veritate, kobra_1972, qwedsw, alatyr12, and comet924.
- We are volunteers; we don't have to do this. Consider this when you are waiting for help. Getting mad will not endear you to us, and we are not required to help you.
- Please be PATIENT. There are usually only a small number of Helpers on the board and we're working as quickly as we can to find you the lowest price on your item.
- Do not answer or otherwise *bump* your own post. We look first for posts with "0" replies; if a board has a reply, we assume you've been helped and will skip the post.
- We will tell you the SHOP where you can find your item. Expect nothing more, though you may be surprised. Not all the helpers are as rich as you think, though we can still be generous.
- Do not expect us to NeoMail you with what we find; this takes too of much of our time, and we have a lot of other people to help.
- Any quest with a TIME LIMIT allows you to use the Shop Wizard. You don't need our help for that. Brain Tree answers can only be obtained by feeding the Esophagor in the Haunted Woods twice. No one else can help you, even if they wanted to.
- NO FAERIE QUEST will ask for a Paint Brush, Job Coupon, Codestone, Dubloon, Ticket, Scratchcard, or Neopet, so don't try scamming us. We will report you.
- If you can't afford your item, play some games, especially on quests without time limits. Begging for items that you can't afford will only prove that you are immature. If you cannot afford a timed quest, then don't finish it; there's no penalty.
- Post in legible and readable font--this means no invisible or crazy text, no chat speak, and no all caps. If we can't read your item, we can't find it. And if you have insulting neoHTML or neoHTML that isn't easily distinguisable from your request, you also may not get help.
- Post exact item and spelling. Better yet, copy and paste the entire faerie quest message (without apostrophes). Helpers do not have time to correct spelling and play guessing games to find your items, and we do NOT know all the items.
- Please" and "Thank you" are much appreciated. Quest helpers should never ask for rewards, although if you choose to give one, that's always appreciated. We do it because we love the game.
- Respect the helpers. Chances are pretty good if you upset one of us, you will find yourself going through 20 million shops for your item. We all know each other, and we stick together.
- Scam or spam anywhere on the board, and you will be reported. This includes chain letters, fake quests, contests, and shop ads. Read the Terms & Conditions if you're unsure about anything.
Method 6: Check your Inventory or your Saftey Deposit Box for the item.
You never know what you might have hanging around, especially when common things like cheap grooming items or clothes are requested.
There is one avatar obtainable from the random faerie quests and that is the "Buzzin" avatar. If, by a rare chance, the Fountain Faerie chooses you to do a quest, complete the quest and then paint a Buzz at her Fountain. Remember, there is no time limit for the quest or when you paint your pet. Click here for an in-depth guide to Fountain Faerie quests.
There are no lasting consequences if you choose not to do a quest. To cancel a quest, go to the Neopian map, click Faerieland, click the City, and then click the building towards the bottom that says Faerie Quests. There is also a link on the Shop Wizard page where the "cheating" message is. Once at the Faerie Quests Building, simply click "I do not want to do this quest." Queen Fyora will then tell you that you will not be granted quests for the next 600 seconds (or ten minutes). But, worry not. At the end of ten minutes, just visit the building again and you will be eligible.
Illusen
[?]
Illusen is an Earth Faerie who lives in a small glade in Meridell. You can get there by clicking Meridell on the Neopian map and then clicking on her glade in the upper right-hand corner. Illusen's quests require random items around Neopia, usually increasing in price as your level gets higher. You CAN use the Shop Wizard to find the items, as well as any other method listed above (though most people would highly suggest the Shop Wizard). But, you must be quick about it. Illusen's quests give you about sixteen minutes to retrieve the item which means you'll need the Neopoints on hand. Also, the higher the level, the more likely it is for Illusen to ask for an unbuyable item. You will only be asked for one item per quest.
After you complete a quest, you will move up one level (for a total of fifty levels). But unlike many other quests, you will not receive a prize after every quest. Please see this table for the prizes and levels they are received. Please also see that the prizes are not worth much until the higher levels (around 35+).
There are some restrictions when doing Illusen's quest. First, you cannot do a quest for Illusen and a quest for Jhudora within TWELVE HOURS of each other. There is a strong dislike between the two faeries and they will not allow you to work for both of them at the same time. That being said, you can do either Illusen's or Jhudora's quest every twelve hours, or a maximum of twice a day (thank you Kimiko). This is very important especially for those trying to get on the hi-score table.
![]()
There are two avatars that can be received from Illusen's quest. The first one, "Illusen's Glade," can be obtained after you complete 20 levels of Illusen's quests. The second avatar, "Illusen Doll," is only available on Illusen Day which is 17th day of Running (or March 17th). All you must do is complete one quest on this day. Both avatars will be awarded along with the prize if applicable.
The penalties for failing a quest for Illusen can be quite harsh. If you do not make the time limit, no matter the reason or level you are currently on, you will be reset to level 1. Unfortunately, many fail towards the higher levels when she springs an unbuyable upon them. There is no way to manually cancel Illusen's quest. The only way to forego the quest is to let the time run out; remember the consequence.
Jhudora
[?]
Jhudora is a Dark Faerie who lives on a small cloud in Faerieland. You can get there by clicking Faerieland on the Neopian map and then clicking on her purple cloud on the left side. Jhudora's quests require random items around Neopia, usually increasing in price as your level gets higher. You CAN use the Shop Wizard to find the items, as well as any other method listed above (though most people would highly suggest the Shop Wizard). But, you must be quick about it. The Snow Faerie
[?]
Taelia the Snow Faerie lives in an igloo on top of Terror Mountain. You can reach it by clicking on Terror Mountain on the Neopian map, clicking the "Terror Mountain" sign at the top right, and then clicking on the igloo with the sign that says "Snow Faerie Quests" located near the middle of the page. The Snow Faerie's quests will consist of a search for one to three food items per quest. Be picky when deciding which quests to do for the Snow Faerie. She will often ask for very expensive foods and the quest could end up costing you much more than you receive. You CAN use the Shop Wizard to find the items as well as any other method (though the Shop Wizard is highly suggested). Your time limit for the quest is a little over one hour. While that does give you time to earn some quick Neopoints, it's still best to have it on hand. I would suggest not spending much more than 2,000 Neopoints per quest.
The Snow Faerie will always award you with a random snowball, a random item, and somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 Neopoints. Occasionally, the random item will be well worth the quest alone, but it is very rare.
There is one avatar that you can receive from this particular quest. The avatar name is "Taelia the Snow Faerie." To obtain this particular avatar, you must simply complete a Snow Faerie quest. It will be awarded along with your usual award.
There is no penalty for failing to complete a Snow Faerie quest. However, there is also no way to manually cancel it either.
HAUNTED WOODS QUESTS
Three characters in the Haunted Woods give out quests. Two of the three ask for items and the remaining asks for information. Two are also very closely related.
The Brain Tree
[?]
The Brain Tree is very hard to miss. Click on the Haunted Woods on the Neopian Map and then on the huge tree with the pulsating brain in the upper-left.
The Brain Tree's quests are interesting in that he does not ask for items but information. He will give you the name of a Neopian (e.g. Boris Korbat) and ask for the year and place of that Neopian's death. There are specific steps to retrieving that information, because it's not something the Neopedia can help you with, but another character.
- Accept the Brain Tree's quest.
- Accept an Esophagor quest.
- Complete the Esophagor quest. As a prize, the Esophagor will give you the year of death of the Neopian. Write it down exactly.
- Repeat steps 2 and three to get the place of death. Write it down exactly.
- Return to the Brain Tree. In the space marked "Year of Death" write the date as "00 BN." In the space marked "Place of Death" write the place as "(The) Place." Be sure your answers are exact.
The Brain Tree usually gives you an hour, more or less, to finish the quest. He rewards with Neopoints (usually somewhere around 1,000) and an item. There is no penalty for failing to complete a Brain Tree quest. However, there is also no way to manually cancel it either.
The Esophagor
[?]
Just underneath the Brain Tree lives the Esophagor. This ravenous dark mass is hungry at all times and asks for one to three Spooky Food items. He gives about an hour and thirty minutes to complete the quest. You CAN use the Shop Wizard to find the items as well as any other method (though the Shop Wizard is highly suggested).
Be choosy about the quests you do. The Esophagor's reward is around 1,000 Neopoints and a random item that is usually inexpensive (of course there are always exceptions). I wouldn't suggest spending more than 2,000 Neopoints per quest. Also be careful about timing. If you have a Brain Tree quest running at the same time as an Esophagor quest, you will automatically get one of the answers to the Brain Tree's question as a prize. To disqualify this, you must visit the Brain Tree after time has run out to confirm failure before finishing the quest for the Esophagor. It may be in your best interest to either restock at Spooky Food or complete a few quests for Edna the Witch if you plan on doing a lot of quests for the Esophagor. There is no penalty for failing to complete an Esophagor quest. However, there is also no way to manually cancel it either.
Edna the Witch
[?]
The third Haunted Woods character is Edna the Witch. You can get to her Tower by clicking on the Haunted Woods on the Neopian map and then clicking on her tower in the bottom-right corner. Edna is notoriously known for being a rip off. She will ask for one to three random items for "spells." If you bring back the items, she will reward you with a small Neopoint amount (usually not more than 200) and a random Spooky Food item. It is possible to get expensive items such as Grundo Stix, Spider Liquorice, and even a Snorkle Snout, but it is extremely rare. She can help you get a nice stock of many Spooky Foods (especially if you enjoy Esophagor quests. But, Edna is not very appealing profit-wise as quests go. I would stay within the 1,000 Neopoint area if you are going to try to make any kind of profit.
Edna will typically give around an hour and thirty minutes to complete here quest. You CAN use the Shop Wizard to find the items as well as any other method (though the Shop Wizard is highly suggested). There is no penalty for failing to complete one of Edna's quests. However, there is also no way to manually cancel it either.
The main reason most people even attempt Edna's quests is to receive the "Edna - Cackle!" avatar. It is obtained randomly after the completion of one of Edna's quests. The avatar is as notoriously awful as the quest as it usually takes a massive amount of attempts before you are awarded it. Some would suggest raising the Neopoint quota from 1,000 to 3,000 if you can afford it to get in as many tries as possible. There is no way to boost your luck.
MYSTERY ISLAND QUESTS
There is only one set of quests located on Mystery Island. Those are the Kitchen Quests. They are generally a good profit if chosen correctly and are popular among those that frequent the battledome.
Mystery Island Chef
[?]
The final quest is the Kitchen Quest which is given out by the Mystery Island Chef. You can get there by clicking on Mystery Island on the Neopian map and then clicking the Kitchen Quests towards the bottom-left of the page. A chef's duty is to make food, so the Mystery Island Chef will ask for one to four random food items to create a recipe for the great Mumbo Pango. Typically, you will receive one hour and thirty minutes to complete the quest which should be plenty of time. Pick and choose your quests. A nice spending window is about 2,000 to 3,000 Neopoints per quest. If completed, the Chef will give you somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 Neopoints and possibly a random item OR he will give you a statistics boost (+1) to one of your pets. You will not receive all of them, it's either one or the other. You cannot choose your prize and you cannot choose the pet that gets the statistics boost. You CAN use the Shop Wizard to find the items as well as any other method (though the Shop Wizard is highly suggested). There is no penalty for failing to a complete Kitchen quest. However, there is also no way to manually cancel it either.
