You stumble through the forest, the dark shadows reaching out to you, the bony fingers of the inky blackness clawing at you. Shuddering, you run past a crashed car, pinned against a mighty oak tree, the bare branches thrusting up into the inky black sky. Looking up, you notice no stars are out, only thick gray smoke billows out into the twilight. The path before you, is beginning to shrink, that much is sure. Once a gravel road, it has turned into a diminishing dirt path, leading you to nowhere. Pausing, you see a faint yellow flicker. Hope seizes you and you run as quickly as you can towards the wavering light. Falling, you scrape your knee on a rock, but ignore the familiar trickle of blood. Your nearly there.
The light becomes closer, and soon your upon it, the light turns out to be a flickering candlestick, which was doused with a hiss as you rushed towards it. It sits a top an old mangled stump, the stump seated in the square of a knoll, overlooking a city far in the distance. The city has no lights, only the crackling of fire in the alleyways and streets. The smoke you realize, is from there, the clouds billowing heavenwards. Looking down, you see a small book laying beside the candle. Probing for a match, you quickly relight said candle, and stare down at the rustic pages with peaked curiosity.

I haven't written in this dirty old thing for over a year, but something has pushed me to fill the pages as quickly as I can. If someone were to find this ratty old diary, they'd know what happened. To me. To the world. So, let me say this to the reader. My name is Madison Callaway. I'm sixteen, and live on the outskirts of a little town called Harlen. This is my terribly old, ignored diary, in which I've come to see, is very important now.
Let begin by saying: a week ago, the world as just as content and unknowing as it was a year ago. But, something has happened over these last few days, that has changed things drastically. It all started Monday morning, when a warning flashed bright red on my TV, and school was canceled. At first thought, tornado, hurricane, something like that. Was I ever wrong. There were many scientists on the news, very many, speaking in jargon I couldn't understand, but I happened upon one, who put it perfectly clear for me. So clear, I began to cry uncontrollably.
To put things in simple terms, there is an epidemic. Something we call the SIV - Swine Influenza Virus. This disease is the mother of all virus', anything you ever thought was essentially life threatening, throw it out the -blocked- We estimate, within the next week, there will be a seventy percent increase in the virus. Resulting in animalistic hunger, rage, violence, anger. This is the real deal people, if you have a home, stay in it, don't go outside. What we're saying is, Harlen, has became the center of all pandemic."

Danny is gone. Mom and I searched all night, and he's gone. I'm afraid, because she is starting to look pale, and her once brilliant copper eyes, and turning a dull green. I have to go, she's calling me.

October 17th ||
I haven't found the time to write in this thing, the world is chaotic. I'll start by saying the most terrifying thing happened yesterday. I looked out the window, into the usually bustling streets of Harlen, and not a soul stood upon its streets. The vacancy was appalling, and left a chill in my stomach. I knew what had happened, but I still cant grasp it. I still cant accept the death of all those people. People I knew, I liked. Friends, family.
Six billion people on Earth when the infection hit. SIV had a ninety-percent kill rate, that's five point four billion people dead. Crashed and bled out. Dead. Less than one-percent immunity. That left twelve million healthy people like me. The other five hundred and eighty-eight million turned into a reanimated abomination, and then they got hungry and they killed and fed on everybody. Everybody. Every *single* person that you or I has ever known is dead. Dead.
The thought chills me, and I am alone in this house of mine. My parents and brother died out the second week after the infection hit. Oh, and another thing. I saw a curious creature yesterday, nothing like the zombies wandering around, it was like, a dog of some sort. It scared me at first, but I realized, it was much to large to be any ordinary dog. I've made a sketch of him as well.

Not much to report on. Today's my birthday. Who cares?
October 30th ||
I've kept myself busy, boarding up the house, fathering food, and the occasional trip to the mall - which is by far the most fun thing yet. Anyways, its Halloween, or supposed to be soon. I almost lost track, and when I remember, I began thinking 'Boy, better get candy', then another thing hit me. I'm alone. Well, or so I think. There are others out there, but I haven't yet found them. And then there are the zombies, the reanimated humans that mope around my house, waiting for me, trying to get in.
Oh, and that creature, I saw it again. It seems he is a male, I've come to believe this due to his hulking size, and also, this little, green .thing follows him around. It looks like a light, but I'm not completely sure. Anyways, I'm not sure if he's hostile, I'll find out tomorrow, and then write in here about it. As for now, I'm off to bed.

She never wrote about it. A deep voice says from behind you. You spin around, looking up at a hulking black monster. A scream escapes your lips, and the candle hisses out again. Spinning around to escape, you hear a terribly dull sigh. Pausing, you glance over your shoulder at the creature, then back down at the book. Its him. His pupil-less eyes stare at you, seeming to cause every instinct labeled run to scream in your ears. You want to, but something about him intrigues you. What? you say, leaning on the stump, but keeping a hand out as if to stop him from eating you. Though he could perfectly well gobble you whole. He flicked his eyes, She never wrote about it, he repeated, this time softly, looking down at the smoldering city. Taking his to consideration, you slouch. Why not? you breath, your voice almost nonexistent, but he hears you. Still watching the city, he flicks his enormous tail, but the hair of the end doesn't move, despite its silky appearance. You take a moment to look carefully at his figure, it really is hideous, though his coat has a glossy sheen to it. She died, he says nonchalantly, seeming to be hypnotized. You look up, staring into his fathoms. What happened, who are you?

Who am I? he echoes softly, you nod, seeming to work up an unconvincing smile. He sighs, hunching his shoulders and approaching the book. A monster he mutters, it unsettles you, sending chills up your spine. He turns towards you, closing his eyes and taking another deep breath, his rancid breath polluting the air around you. For the moment, he explains his name and all the other vitals, that seem not very important, but interesting.

You nod, satisfied with him. He has sat on the edge of the knoll now, watching the city dance with shadows and eerie green fire. You come up and plop down beside him, shuddering under his giant shadow. You decide his about the size of a big black bear but taller, slimmer, thinner. His legs make up most of his enormous height. What happened here? What happened to the girl? you say, looking up at his sullen face, his painful eyes blinked and gaze over at you. You feel once again, as if he can see right through you. I mean, I know about the virus, but what about you, you trail off, fidgeting under his constant gaze. He finally looks away, sighing a bit and looking up at the sodden sky, the deep gray firmament rumbling above you. It will rain soon. I did, he led off. For a moment, you felt you heart sink, and an ineffable fear crawls over you.
It was three years ago the virus hit, and it took hold quite suddenly to this city. Harlan was once the epitome of happiness, people greeting one another, happy faces, smiles. I was one of them. Not a human, no, but a canine roaming the street, digging up food for my small family. We lived in the streets and alleys, bedding down in shacks and abandon buildings as often as we could. We weren't at all worried about the spread, the disease hadn't quite mutated enough to affect us. But, we were terribly mistaken.
My mate Trisha and I, we didn't even worry as the humans around us became the reanimated. We just slunk around the city, stealing food, enough to keep the family fed. I wasn't afraid of these 'zombies', not as much as you humans are, I looked at them like I would a giant bear, or cougar, just another predator to avoid.
It was raining out, muggy, sticky, raining. I remember I was pillaging an old hotdog stand, gulping down strands of the meat quietly to myself. Trisha had taken ill, and stayed home for most of the day, and I was forced to scrounge by myself. I heard a noise, a heavy rasping, and when I turned around, I was met with fangs and bloodshot eyes. I had only a split second to react, and backed up, right into another one. They were upon me, sinking teeth and claws in wherever they could, I couldn't escape it. It was over in moments, they sprang back into their holes, full for the time being, leaving my limp body among the litter and puddles.
Then, an amazing thing happened, I awoke, and the feeling in my stomach, I can only describe as complete hunger and urge. My stomach wanted flesh, my mouth watered for it. I knew exactly where to get some too. They were sleeping. Quietly. In a nest of newspaper, their little mouths hung open, their grumbling bellies, but I wasn't me. I only watched as I did these horrendous deeds, unable to stop myself.
After that, I wandered the city, searching for more. I couldn't taste real food, it was similar to ash and dirt. Water was no longer a stable, all I wanted was flesh and blood. Alone. My body changed painfully, my eyes milky, and white until I could no longer see but only shadows, and outlines. I can see clearly well at night, but in daylight, nothing graces these tired eyes.
And then there was Madison. The only survivor in Harlan. I didn't even know. I. Just. Let me explain, I don't even remember, I never do. A day, maybe even a whole month I am in these fits of rage and hunger, but never able to see. I am immune, but able to carry the hosted virus, infecting anything I touch. They're all out there. My victims, reanimated and reliving, just as I. Only, they don't remember, they don't see. They have no thoughts. Only I do. I killed Madison. Where or when I don't know. But, I can her voice inside me. Their souls, their screams. In me.

The story is chilling, and you realize how terribly he hates this virus within him. You pause, and shift in the silence, his own voice lingering in your ears. Well surely you have friends, somewhere you break off, and he shoots you a glance. After a long pause, he nods slowly. Somewhere. I knew them long ago, but I keep my distance. I couldnt cope with them in my head, in my dreams. he says. You feel very grateful, that he is telling you all this. He must have been on his own for a long time.

Zeriphina
Zeri is a mystery. We first met, when she as in Harlan, on what she calls 'drop-off'. She is an assassin for The Dark Hand, and she travels a lot, mostly to cities to pick up notes and carry out their instructions. She doesn't like doing it, but she has to. She had a lot of siblings when she was young she tells me, but only one lives. She's doing this to find him. She is also a physic, and can read thoughts and emotions, but not like you think. She cant tell exactly what your doing, but she is amazing at finding ones weakness. She's my oldest friends, and part of a family that Rav put together. She is rather stunning, when you meet her, and talks as if she were meant to nothing but do just that. Very convincing too I might add. I really feel sorry for her at time, and wonder exactly what trouble she's gotten herself into.

Vlaydimir
Vlayd is a really nice guy. He comes from a city deep within earth, a city only he knows where. He is as innocent as one could imagine, not knowing a thing about the world or the people in it. Vlaydimir is the last of his kind, and anyone who meets him can see they were a beautiful people. He is the King of the city, he says. I believe him, because Vlayd cant lie worth beans. I met him once, Zeri introduced me, where she met him, I haven't a clue, but she speaks kindly of him. We're good friends, or were, until this happened to me. I keep my distance, cause Vlayd couldn't harm a fly, let alone me. I feel sorry for the guy. doesn't have any family except, not to mention he is in an entirely different world with different customs, cultures and rules. Last time I saw him, he was doing fine however.

You realize, he really doesn't have company. Fidgeting in the darkness, you hear him sigh, again, but this time he stands up and shadows past you too look down at the book. He stares it for a moment, and looks up at you, those eyes studying you again. You should go now, they're beginning to smell you, he says, and at first you don't understand. A loud screech from the city grabs your attention, and you spin around, looking down upon the ruckus. The most hideous humans that ever lived are looking up at you, drooling and wailing. You know in a few moments they'll begin their climb upwards, savoring the meal to come. You jump up and start up at him. Go north, down the path, and take a turn east, there will be another, its clear from there. Hurry, he says, and in moments hes pushing you away from the screaming. You trip, amble up and begin running wildly down the path, firt clinging to your body as you tear through the darkness. Sure enough, there is a path, one you did not see before. A light shines at the end, and you start after it. Avoiding branches and brambles the entire way.
Finally out of sight, you run up to the light, which is actually a lamppost, and realize you weren't that far from home after all. You take comfort in that thought, and realize, you aren't to far from Harlan either. Shivering, you run up to your porch and take another look out at the foredooming forest and shudder. You know he's there, watching you. His eyes glinting in the dark.
