INSTRUCTIONS!

Welcome to How to make a Paintbrush!

For the purpose of this tutorial we will be making a Plushie Paint Brush.
What you need are the following things:

Maroon Felt, Light Pink Felt, Brown Felt, Grey or Purple felt, Green Felt and White Felt scraps (for dots on the patch)

Maroon thread, Light Pink thread, and brown thread as well as a sewing needle

Craft stuffing or pollyfil.

As well as all the other "necessities" you personally use when sewing.

Lets get into making this thing!

First off you will need a pattern. As always this pattern was made by me so please dont steal it!You are more than welcome to use it, just right click and save to your computer and print out full page.

We will start off with cutting out our pattern pieces. It's good to do this first to make sure you have all the pieces you need.

Now take the handle side piece and one of the handle pieces and you will sew them together edge to edge all the way around

Once you've went all the way around there will be a little excess, you can cut that off and discard it. It's just there incase =)

Now you need to sew the other side on. Dont worry if the seams are showing because this is a plushie paint brush and it is supposed to look "sewn together".Make sure to leave an opening to sew your brush part on and for stuffing to get into!

Now we have that pesky hole to deal with... it's fairly simple to fix, just do the same as you did with the other edges and line them up and sew all the way around the hole.

and it should look something like this:

Now we need the grey/light purple felt whichever you have chosen to use to sew around the bottom of the brush handle. Now you may notice that you start off with a rectangle shaped handle opening, and once you have sewn the trim around the bottom it will look more circle but this is ok.

Sew it all the way around the opening but only on one edge. Then sew the two ends together

Now you can set the handle to the side for a while and get ready to work on the brush!!

Onto the brush!

You need all of the brush bits now which means all of the maroon pieces. And you need to sew all of the edges around the bottom piece.

after you have sewn all four pieces onto the bottom of the brush it should look like this:

Now onto the paint bit. I find it easier in the long run to sew the paint onto the brush before sewing the rest of the brush together. Take the light pink pieces and lay them out over your brush. I lay mine out in mirror images of each other so the brush has more flow to it.

After you have decided how you want the paint to look on your brush you need to sew the sides to the bottom just like you did with the brush pieces.

and then place it over the bottom of your brush lay out. You can pin it into place if you like so the pieces dont move around while you are sewing them together.

Now you can start sewing the paint onto the brush. I find it easier to stuff each flap as I go rather than wait until the last one, as the last flap is tricky to stuff and get into all the little nooks and crannies.

After you've sewn all the way around one of the flaps just lift up the rest from the brush base and stuff each one until you get to the last flap. When you get to the last flap you need to put a little extra stuffing in the bottom and continue sewing the last flap on, making sure to leave an opening so you can stuff the last flap.

and after you have stuffed the paint to your liking you need to sew up the opening. It should look like a puffy pink puddle now.

Now we get to the extra tricky part.
You need to Sew the edges of the brush together, it's easiest to just pinch them together and line up the edges. Then just sew up the side until you get to the top.

Do that for all four sides. It will look a bit weird but it will fix it's self up once we start stuffing it.

Now you need to grab your handle back. There are two different ways you can do this next step, you can stuff the handle first making sure you get all the way up to the top and around the hole (but dont over stuff it yet), or you can leave it and stuff the whole thing at once which is what I've done. After doing it I find that the first way might be a bit easier for beginners.

Line up the edges and make sure that the sides line up, for instance the sides of the brush should line up with the sides of the brush. If you've cut out the pattern properly then there should be no trimming or bunching of the fabric required.

It is easiest to flip the gray felt and sew it that way you have something to get your fingers behind.

and then you sew all the way around making sure to leave an opening to stuff it.

And then you stuff it to your liking.

And after you have stuffed it you need to sew up the hole. Just remember that it doesnt matter if you can see the seams on this brush as it is supposed to look like it is sewn together.

Now you need to do your "bristles" basically you need to sew little loops in a line from the paint to the trim.

Try and space the lines evenly and do three on each of the bigger sides. The smaller sides wont need them.

Almost finished!!!! One step to go, and thats the little green patch to go on the side of the handle.

Now it would be best to take a paper punch to the white felt scrap you have to make "dots" for the spots on the green patch, unless you can find white spotted green felt which might be hard. Then you can sew them onto the green patch with just a small stitch in the middle to hold them in place or even glue them down. I recommend the latter only if you plan on keeping it for yourself and not giving it to small children or pets to play with as the pieces may come off if glued of they may hurt themselves on the hard spots.

After you've finished making your patch you will need to place it on the side of the brush and pin it into place so it wont move around while you sew it on.

Sew around the patch with white thread on all four sides and remove the pin.

And Viola! You're finished!!! Now you can "Paint" your pets!

*giggles*

Alternatively if you were looking for the real neopets paint brushes you could always go to the Trading Post and search for Plushie Paint Brush or you can try your luck at the Auction House or wish really really hard for the rare Jacko Event where he may give you one. There has also been talk of them being handed out at Key Quest Games but those have not been confirmed to me yet so no promises there!

I hope you enjoyed my little page! please be sure and pass it around!!!
