Welcome, Stranger

Hello, I am Destiny. There is much to be known about me... Much that you, nor anyone else, will ever know. Of course, my sister knows a lot. Yet even she doesn't know the half of it. But I will permit you the wonderful gift of knowing my story. So enjoy...

The Story

The cold night wind blew across the flat mesa. The land was very flat, but the edges of it fell down suddenly, miles down into the ocean. Few knew about the mysterious place, but those who did seldom spoke of it. No archaeologist could figure out why or how it was in the middle of the ocean, but it didn't matter. There was little life on top of the flat mountain. Just a bit of shrubbery here and there. If you didn't know, a mesa is like a mountain, but about half way through it stops and has a very flat top. Anyways. The salty air and lack of water and sunlight (due to the constant cloud cover) kept most life off, whether it was visiting or not.
The storm roared overhead, and the choppy waves crashed hard against each other and the mesa-island. It was very hard to get their, by air or sea. If the lightning didn't get you, the waves would. But suddenly, on the horizon, a small rowboat appeared. All that was in it was a cooler full of food, a tent, a blanket, and a single neopets. It was a miracle that the solo pet had survived this long without being killed. But the pet rowed steadily closer, not once being caught in the middle of two waves. It slowly became clear that it was a darigan zafara. She finally pulled the boat up to a small beach, created by a crack in the mesa. She pulled the boat far onto shore to avoid it being taken away by the sea. Here, any trees and bushes grew because living conditions were more suitable. She hauled her things out of the boat, and under a tree that leaned over, as if it wanted to provide protection. By the looks of it, it seemed to be a willow. The long tendrils provided good cover from the wind, and from the occasional sprays of high tide. Just to be safe, she pulled her boat past the tree, and tied it to the roots of another with some spare rope. She then set up her tent, laid the blanket inside, and put the cooler inside. She sat down inside the tent and pulled out a sandwich and some food to eat. After eating, se made sure the tent was secure, and went into a deep sleep after weeks at sea.
The next morning, a couple streaks of sunshine shone down on the island. The sea wasn't quite so dangerous, but still many clouds hung in the sky. The zafara woke, and after drinking from a nearby river, filling up her water bottle, and eating, she set off up a rock slope leading to the top of the island with only her water, some food strapped to it, and a piece of paper in her hand. The only signs of life were a couple of shrubs and a few Vullard nests. She saw one Vullard, but it was scrawny. It looked like it was eating a grackle bug, but she couldn't tell. She didn't try to catch one, because they'd probably fly down and attack her, and th- wait… She could fly! Why hadn't she done this before? She opened her wings and flapped until she lifted off the ground. Okay, so it was harder than usual, what with all the winds, but in 15 minutes she reached the top of the mesa. She landed ungracefully, falling practically onto the ground and lying there, tired and painting from the battle with the winds. After regaining her breath and balance, the zafara stood up. "Destiny, old girl, you're almost there!" She smiled to herself, but was nearly knocked back down by another strong gust of wind. "Almost."
after a while, Destiny came to a small opening that lead into a cave in the ground, barely big enough for her to enter. She smiled and licked her fangs. A sudden pang of hunger hit her stomach. She stared down at the morsels of food with her, a tchea fruit, star fish sandwich, and whole purplum jelly. She sighed. What she really wanted was meat. She closed her eyes and imagined… a warm, sweet, juicy blumaroo steak. Those were so good… She shook herself back into the real world and started down the cave and it got wider, but she realized there was no light. So she drew in a great breath, and gathering as much energy as she could, she blew a gust of fire out in front of her, but before she could see what was around her, she ran out of air. She noticed she had lighted some torches on the sides of the cave. 'That's weird…' she though. 'But convenient'. She picked up one from its place on the wall and continuing down the cave. Luckily, there were no other paths, so Destiny didn't have trouble deciding where to do. After an hour of walking, her feet hurt, and she was nearly starving. She sighed, and pulled out the tchea fruit and purplum jelly. She ate the whole fruit and half of the jelly so she would have food on the way back. 'I sure hope I'm close… I don't know how much more of this I can take! I feel like I've been walking in circles!' But something inside her told her to keep moving. After and hour or so more, she came to it. Finally! She swelled with joy! She danced around the room, shouting and hollering, but then stopped, just in case. She pulled out the old piece of paper. On one side was a map, on the other was some type of directions. She put the torch in the ground as if it were a plant, and put the map next to it. The writing was in another language, but she had deciphered it. "Let's see. First, take the doubloon like no other. She looked at the pile, and saw one that was bigger and more detailed. As soon as she brought it close to the map, the sentence disappeared. "Good thing I memorized this. I guess they disappear as you complete them. Okay, next, find the chain of the bloody sea." She walked back to the pile, and after looking for a while, she saw a blood red chain, battered with age. "Next, bring them together." Destiny did so, and they both began to glow. Within seconds, they linked together, and became a necklace. "Wear this necklace for your _Destinii_. Whoa! It knows my name!" She put the chain around her neck. "Finally, approach the chest, draw blood from tooth, and hit chain, coin, and chest in the fall." She took a deep breath. She had just one shot. She flew up to the top and stood next the chest. She took the doubloon in her hand. She lowered her fangs to her finger, and quickly cut herself. A drop of blood rolled down her finger, and fell off. Time seemed to slow down as she watched it. It fell onto the coin, and splattered off the chain. It rolled off and into the chest. Everything started to whirl around. She was lifted off her feet as the whole room and it's contents spun around her in circles. Her cuts where immediately healed, her hunger gone. Everything lit up, spinning faster and faster! She closed her eyes, and could almost hear the whispers… "The curse is lifted; the curse is lifted, long live _Destinii_, richest in all the land…" She suddenly found herself beck home, in the living room. Her boat was outside, and so was everything else she had brought. Her family looked up at her in awe, sitting atop a giant pile of gold and riches. "Destiny!" cried her mother. "You did it! You're alive- oh, Destiny!" Destiny ran to hug her mother, but what she was most happy about was being home, and safe. She looked at the TV. "For the news today, a giant mesa in the middle of the ocean mysteriously disappeared!" She laughed.
