Welcome...

The sky rumbles as forks of lightning split the sky, and rain begins to fall. You wrap your rainjacket tighter around you, and grumble as you hold your lantern in front of you, stumbling over the hard earth and grass clumps as you attempt to find your campsite. The rain falls thicker and thicker. You begin to regret your vacation trip here, to the almost last scrap of wild land left in neopia: The scraps of wild plains and forests and mountains between the haunted woods and Neopia central, and between the Meridell Delta and the Haunted woods. Also, the six uncivilized grassland islands scattered beside the neopia mainland. The rain falls steadily thicker, and your lantern begins to flicker and finally dies. Suddenly, a giant crack of lighting illuminates a shape before you. You fall over in fear. Before you stands a gigantic krawk, moving swiftly on his four limbs. His front arms are bandaged, and you take notice of the strange markings on his back and hind legs. Atop his large, graceful ears sprout two large horns, or tines. His grey mane is matted from the rain. Another lightning flash illuminates him as he races towards you.
Come out of the rain, Ahote, restless one." he says in a deep voice. "Let Zaroshii, Canowicakte, the forest hunter, lead you.
You grab onto Zaroshii's tail and try to keep up as he leads you to the foot of a mountain, into a cave. You let out a whoosh of breath you realize you've been holding the entire time as you arefinally warm and dry. In the cave is a small tasseled round table, with a ornage crystal ball glowing on its pedestal. A few old, withered mats and leaves reside in a corner where you think Zaroshii sleeps. There are old, cracked vases, proboably stolen, with the rememants of smoking incense sticks burning in them. You start to go to the crystal ball, but Zaroshii's tail slaps your hand out of the way.
Ah ah-ah! Don't touch, please.
Who are you?" you ask.
I am a Seer, guest. The only one left in this world. Just as I am the only one left of my krawk clan..but tis a long, long story.
You look towards the rain.
Tell me." you say eagerly.

Story

This story might never be finished..because if I do, it will be novel-length and I might as well publish it o-o

I cannot tell my story without going a long way back...

Chapter 1 - Birth

For in the beginning, there was Light.
-David Clement Davies

The landscape was perfect for life. There was a savanna-like grass field which was bordered by forest on the east and mountain on the west. Here, took refuge many species, the wild lupes and draiks living in the mountains and footlhills, while the wild herds of Ixi and uni grazed on the fields. The forest was abundant in lots of species, but we shall let our story focus on a small herd of the Pallaton, or a species of ancient krawks that were the absolute noblest and bravest. Pallaton species had horns like mine, none for the females, and the males had long horns, sometimes, when the krawk is especially powerful, they have two tines, or points. My herd had no wings, and the same tail like mine. The Patwin, or males, fought with their horns mainly. The females disposed teeth and claw. On a small raised slope, stood Brechin, leader of the herd, the only krawk with two tines in their herd. He watched over them and the progress of the Qaletaqa, the patrollers who marked boundaries with their teeth and protected the herd. Suddenly, he heard a rustle behind him. He swivelled around quickly, snarling, his powerful teeth and shoulders high.
Who goes, Tewa, or Oralge?" Brechin raised his tail proudly at the mentioning of the formal name of their clan, Oralge, compared to the general name, Tewa, for all creatures inhabiting their lands.
From the trees came one of the Qaletaqa, one fo the new, young and thin recruits.
It is me, Brechin. Willow." he said, raising a claw.
So Willow, now even Oralge spy on their own?
Willow dismissed the comment with a shake of ears and claw.
No Brechin..your mate sent for you. Your son breaks his shell.
A fire alit in Brechins eyes, as he raced past Willow and through the herd, to his mate, Kiche, meaning spirit of Sky. She was curled around a large pale blue egg, which was shaking and hatching, and a small muzzle was coming out of it. A few minutes later, a resounding bellowing roar of a krawk tore through the air as the herd picked up their heads from the earth to see Brechin rearing proudly as his mate held her son curled up in her arms.
What shall we name him, Brechin?" said Yuma.
Brechin thought.
How about Zaroshii?" he said proudly. Zaroshii, the Bodaway word for Future seemed perfectly appropriate.

Chapter 2 - The Power

For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see, saw the Vision of the world and all the wonder that would be.
-Alfred Lord Tennyson, Locksley Hall

The leaves were red, and the grass began turning brown as the whole world seemed to shrivel before the fast oncoming winter. The Patwin and the Yuma were as equal during this time, both male and female hunting and collecting berries and other edible nuts and roots for the winter. Through the working herd ran two small krawks, a male and female. The female was a shade of ghostly blue, and the male was a common blue, with his small new horns still pointing forward, as they would begin to set backwards later in life. This was Zaroshii, as young krawk.
Come on, Kuva, let's go find my dad!" he called to the female.
Kuva smiled and nodded. She did not have any horns, as they had never seemed to grow for her. Thanks to Roshi's appeal, the clan had permitted her to stay.
They ran to find Roshi's father, the leader of the herd. They found him at the hunting grounds, carrying the bones and supplies of dried carrion back to the gathering place, where the clan would stay at winter.
Father, can we help hunt with your hunting party? Please?" asked Roshi hopefully.
Brechin looked down at the two young krawks and smiled.
No, Zaroshii, but you may come along and watch if you wish.
He set the supplies down at the gathering place, and ran off to find the hunting party, Kuva and Roshi close behind.

Later, when they had successfully hunted, Zaroshii lay down in the grass by the bones.
Suddnely, he saw a bright flash of light. There was fog..or was it smoke? He couldn't tell. Shadow pteri ravens flew in circles around the empty plains..but the palins are never empty..he recognised the Gathering Place, the large oak torn at and mangled, with bloodstains on the grass. Suddenly, there was another flash of light. He was flying over the plains, flying over a shape lying in the grass. He landed beside the shape and gasped. It was him, himself, his body lying still in the grass next to the bones of the kill, his yes glowing a ghostly yellow. With a third flash of light, he was back in his own body, and in front of him, he noticed, a brown pteri, picking at the bones. Terrified, he ran away with his tail in between his legs, not knowing where he was heading. He found his father, and told him about his visions. His father's face was grave, as Kuva tagged along when they went to the old storyteller, Kahani, a wise one. The old fortune teller was blind, and Roshi shivered as he stared into those milk-white eyes.
Brechin told the old fortune teller what had happened at the hunting grounds. The fortune teller sniffed the air for their scents, and said slowly
Young Zaroshii has been blessed with the power to see the future...he posesses the Inner Eye, and the power as I do, even if it is weak in me, the power of the Sight. He has also touched a unique power, the power to become one with a bird's soul, to look through their eyes.
What do I do?" said Zaroshii, staring at his claws.
Make the journey." replied Kahani. "Travel to the top of the great mountain, where they say the great Krawk god, Valg, lives. Come down to the other side, where you will find the ones who will guide you to complete mastery of your powers.
Roshi shivered.
His father had a strange look on his face, as if his bright red eyes had suddenly become clouded and evil. His upper lip twitched.
Zaroshii." he growled.
Yes, father?" Roshi answered, as innocently as he could.
His father turned on him, snarling.
Go! Get out of my sight! I will not have some strange powers putting my herd in danger. You are BANISHED!
Snapping at Roshi's tail he drove him up the rocky bluff of the foothills.
I dare you..I dare you to come back." said Brechin.
Roshi's eyes filled with more tears to replace the ones streaming down his face. With a snort, his father turned tail and left him. A small clump of bushes rustled as Kuva came after him.
Go back, Kuva. I'm banished. Stay with your parents." he choked.
I would never leave you, Roshi." she said. "I will come with you." Roshi's heart lifted.

Chapter 3 - Quest

Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore'.
-Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven

Roshi walked slowly up the stone and scrub grass foothills, not thinking in particular about anything. Kuva trailed along right behind him as they came to the highest hill yet.
Roshi jumped up onto a mossed rock.
Roshi, do you really know where we are going..?" asked Kuva.
No, Kuva..not really. I know we are going to the highest mountain, then beyond..
Do you think we can make it?" she asked nervously.
That..I do not know either.." he sighed.
After a struggle, they reached the top of the knoll.
They gasped as they saw what lay beyond the knoll.
It was a beautiful lagoon, with a willow trees growing around it. Their gentle branches swayed in the wind as they made minute, soft ripples in the water. The dying sun cast red glows on the fall colours.
What a beautiful place.." sighed Kuva.
Roshi nodded.
We shall spend the night here..

Faraway form the two youngsters, a voice cackled...
You have done well, Ayamehi. Soon, as our Seers foretell, there will be a great Cataclysm... and once we have the Child separated from its fellows, we render it helpless...you learn well.
The other dark form smirked. In its hands it held a flaming orange ball of some sort of power. In the surface was clearly visible Zaroshii and Kuva, sleeping under the willow trees at the loch.
The glow of the power reflected on the other creature. It was a krawk, likewise. It was not of Zaroshii's clan or species. It was of the species Akecheta, from the clan of the noble Ahiga. The Akecheta were krawks who were shrouded in evil misdeed. They lived in the high mountains, and were well trained fighters, who had more enemies than friends. They had sought for years to destroy their neighbors, the Pallaton species, the Oralge clan.
At last, the Ahiga's joy had come when young krawk, Ayamehi, was born with the powers of the Sight. The Ahiga spent endless time planning for the future, to the day when Ayame would be a full grown, fit, and ready to kill the leader of the Oralge clan. Zaroshii's clan. The Ahiga would not stop untilled they contolled all of Neopia. Then they would proceed to wipe out the other side of it.

Zaroshii stirred in his sleep. His body got up, but his eyes remained closed and his breathing calm as if in rest. He sat down by the water. His eyelids were glowing, as his eyes were yellow underneath. He could see with his eyes closed. Suddenly, a vision came to him. He was running along a familiar ridge. The ridge near his homeland. The sky was odd, distorted colors, and great thunderbolts split the sky. He could hear the cries of a hundred of the Oralge, and other cries, moans he had never heard before. Cries of death. He roared. His eyes glowed like headlights. A shadow advanced at him, snarling.
Zaroshii awoke. He was sitting by the water, and Kuva was sleeping soundly still. Morning had come.

Chapter 4 - The Shi'ariu in the Sky

I have had a most rare Vision. I have had a dream, past the wit of a man to say what dream it was.
- William Shakespeare, A midsummer Night's Dream

Roshi and Kuva had reached the mountains. They towered above, covered in trees in snow, like menacing monoliths. Silence ruled the land. The first flakes of winter snow had begun falling, settling over the trees and dead leaves. It was nearing the second of Zaroshii's winters. The two young krawks shivered in the growing snow. Zaroshii's horns had grown, and were now a little less than halfway of his ears. They trudged along and along. Kuva tried to romp in the snow, but Zaroshii was in no mood. He sensed something.
Up there! Look!" Kuva cried.
Up on the farthest mountain on the tallest, there was a giant temple-like building. But Kuva was pointing elsewhere. On a small cliff, there stood creature similar to Tyrannian lupes. At first Roshi thought they were the mountain lupes, but they weren't. They were the mountain krawks, or the Bandar-Loka. They were a bloodthirsty species that lived in the mountains where snow never stops falling. They hunt whatever they can find, slashing with their huge tusks. A whole pack was running down the cliff toawrds them.
Kuva cried out as they started scrabbling up the opposite cliff to escape. Roshi lost his foothold and so did Kuva. The two plummeted straight to the snarling pack below. Roshii felt his back hit the ice. The wind as knocked out of him and he gasped for air. Then everything went black. Before consciousness deserted him, he saw tqo proud sea green figures run to them through the snow.

...

Roshi stirred. He felt warm, and light was filtering down from a wind*w. He closed his eyes.
Have I died? he thought.
He opened his eyes and sat up.
He was on a floor, made of soft wooden slats. The wind*w was without glass or anything. He could snow outside. He was covered with a powder blue cloth, and he was lying on a sheepskin.
The bamboo door slid back.
A krawk of Zaroshii's species, but not his clan, came in. He was wearing a patterned sash around his chest.
He smiled.
You are awake, I see." he said. His voice was like music.
Who are you? Where am I? Where's Kuva?" Roshii spewed with questions.
You are in the Temple of the Sight, on the tallest mountain, the Shitariu in the sky. Do not worry, your friend is well taken care of. She is in the care of our Yuma. I am Valg.
Roshi's mouth dropped open.
You are the Krawk god?
Valg chuckled.
Good heavens! Is that what you clan told you? Funny. I am just the leader of the clan here, the Talulah. Means leaping water.
I am from the Bodaway clan...on the foothills." said Roshi.
Yes. We have expected you to come here. Our temple is a haven for all those that posess the powers of a Seer. Here you will master your powers.
Roshi smiled.
That's great!" said Roshi.
I'm hungry..how long was I asleep?
Seven moons. Winter has arrived.
Can I see Kuva?
The leader's face darkened.
I am afraid not. Our trainees are bound to training. You were lucky to be saved by one if our patrols who fended off the Bandar-Loka.

Chapter 5 - Training

Patience is the companion of wisdom.
- Saint Augustine

Zaroshii began his training after seven moons, when he was fully restored and energetic. Valg took him outside, to the frozen gardens. They stool beside the frozen pool.
Valg cracked the ice with his claws to make a small pool.
Look into the water. Tell me what you see.
Zaroshii peered into the pool.
Nothing." he said.
Look closer. Use your powers. Tell me what you see.
Zaroshii looked again.
He let his mind empty, and felt the power bubble up through his claws. He looked. His eyes were glowing yellow again.
In the water, he could see things: Like a mini motion picture.
He saw Kuva, with the females of the Talulah clan. They were picking frozen berries off in some place.
Roshi looked up.
I saw Kuva. She was picking berries with the others.
Valg smiled.
You have seen the present. You have mastered seeing the present and future, I see.
When will I learn to see the past?" asked Roshi.
Ah. The past. few, even the most skilled, have succeeded in seeing into the past.

The training was rigorous, and it was everyday. No weekend breaks. Roshi would get up with the sun and go to sleep with the moon. In the morning, he collected snow, out it in a barrel, and compressed it with his powers so tightly it turned into water. He brought the water to the Shitariu to be used by the Sensei's. Then Valg would teach him for hours on mastery of the powers, and talks of wisdom. Then, he would eat his only meal he got a day with the other trainees, who were all older than he was. Then he would go to the Fighting Arts master, Maska, strong. Maska taught him the formalities of duels for females, duels for land, hunting formations, and war tactics. All he would need for one day, when he would be the leader of the Bodaway clan.
Time came and passed. Winter howled, then diminshed. The snows began to die as the sun shined and shined and the temperature rose. The first stalks of tender new grass poked up, and new leaves unfurled on the Sakura (Cherry blossom) trees. The pink flowers made the new trees seem like volcanoes, bursting out pink floss.
Roshi stood under a Sakura tree, watching a few tender blossoms fall in the clear pool. A few orange Koi swam in the water.
He felt a shuffle behind him.
He turned. It was Valg, wearing a sash the color of the sakura blossoms.
Are you troubled?" he asked.
Zaroshii stared into the water.
I miss my homeland. And Kuva.
Valg nodded.
It is only natural.
Roshi glared at the water. He was nearing his birthday. Although he didn't know, in summer Zaroshii would be three years old. Almost fully grown. His horns were past the halfway point in his ears now. His muscles were strong, and he stood tall and proud. He made up his mind.
I am going to return." he said bitterly.
I will return, even though I was banished." Zaroshii looked into the water.
My father. Where is my father...
An image swirled on the water. He could see his father. The krawk had grown old. He was sitting under a maple tree. His red eyes were dull. He looked near his end. A grey krawk stood beside him. Roshi had a bad feeling. His skin was crawling at the sight of the light grey and strong body.
Roshi got up.
I wish to see Kuva." he said defiantly. "It is time for us. Try and stop me." he said.
Valg showed no resistance.
You think, I have not foreseen your leaving?" he said.
Come.
Valg led him to a part of the Shitariu he had never seen. As soon as he entered, he was hit and bowled over by a slightly furry, ghost blue blur.
ROSHEEE!" Kuva squealed.
Roshi's eyes were wide.
Kuva had grown. She was a nearly fully grown female now. Her red eyes were clear and full of life. She was lean, proud, and well boned like the godesses of the legends.
Come. We are going back. Back home. Do you wish to come?" he said.
Yes but..Roshi. You have changed." she said in a strange tone.
Roshi didn't answer.

Chapter 6 - The Marking

The great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it.
- William James

Zaroshii gulped. As a new recruit, before his leave, he would have to take part in the yearly Branding Ceremony on the eve of the new year, when all the young trainees would become fully qualified. He stood in a room behind the giant double doors with some other recruits, some wearing sashes like Valg. He felt out of place, as of his personal training with Valg, he had made not many friends. But I shall repeat, not many. That does not mean he had no friends. A youngster from his own generation was interested in returning with him. His name was Karuzii. Karuzii did not behold the powers of a Seer, and he had come from a land across the great water. Zii was powerful, muscled, with gallant dragon wings. He was one of a rare species called Flyare. He wanted to return with Roshi to the Pallaton to become one of the Outriders, the Qualetaqua. Warriors who protected the clan. It is not unusual for certain Achak (Krawks) to shift from their home clan to another, or begin their own with a single family and a few stragglers. Karuzii had been trained in the fighting arts and would make a fine Outrider. He stood beside Roshi, and Roshi felt his side stiffen as the double door were flung open. The room was brightly lit with intricate, beautiful handmade lamps. The Council sat in the center of the room. A crowd watched and cheered. Roshi could see Kuva at the front of the crowd and smiled. They approached the Elders with a trained formation. The trainees who had accomplished training their powers of the Seer would get the traditional white soft bandages for their forearms, emblazoned with magic on the inside to protect from evil spirits and and kind of power flow malfunctions. Zaroshii held out his forearms as a female wrapped the cloth around his arms and starpped it at the top.
For protection and journeys, the Sight trainees also received a spiked bracelet. Zaroshii slipped his onto is tail. He sat for the longest time between two warrior trainees, Karuzii and Thistle. They had both recived black, thick bracelets on their forearms and dark gloves with holes only for their claws, and blue headbands with a silver symbol or goggles.

Zaroshii was honored also with a special crystal ball, that glowed orange-black. He could make it appear at his will when he needed it and make it disappear into a parallel storage world when he needed. Zaroshii bowed his head to all his senseis and walked outside. The new year's eve sky was sparkling with sky, and in the distance he could hear the joyful cries of the creatures, welcoming a new year of their life. The new year was a major celebration in Ancient Neopia. But with a pang, he realized he could now hear the undersounds of the world, the lonely howl of the lupe in the rugged mountains, when the wind told him he must fight or die, and the terrified screams of Ixi stags as snarling carnivores brought them down. Zaroshii sighed. There was so much to understand. He heard his Sensei, Valg, Kuva, Thistle and Karuzii come outside to him. The cold snow swirled around them, the fireworks of the eve. Valg looked solemnly into the frozen pool.
Come, Zaroshii. Come all." he said with a sigh. "There is something I should have told you long ago.
They walked to the pool, frozen over. Valg's eyes glowed fo a moment and the ice melted away.
Look down, Zaroshii.
Zaroshii did. He was surprised.
His eyes had lost the most of their red brilliance. They had becomme muddled with yellow in a few places.
The legend." said Valg.
What legend?" asked Thistle.
Valg looked at him inquisitively.
Valg began to recite and ancient Lore that the young ones were sure they might have heard in their childhood.
When the krawk god, Alo created the world, he created a prophecy for each species he created. The prophecy would be fullfilled in the future, an ancient pact with the gods. This was the prophecy for the Achak:

When the lore lays torn and hated,
Shattered like the ice,
Then shall He justly woken,
From his quiet sleep.

He will be the only one,
Hate between Father and Son.
He can speak the Lera's tongue,
Chased by fear, and its sister, hate.

He shall flee over Glen and Loch,
Go where no Achak has gone
Knowing secrets dark to Lera
Until the zenith touches the moon

The Elements
Shall come to coat his grief
Till the humans conspire
And wreak havoc on the Great Land

First the grass shall flower,
When he touches an ancient power,
Then the fruits will grow ripe as he travels to the sea,
The leaves will wither and fall as he returns to face his woe.

Then he shall meet his enemy,
Who will prove an ally.
When the Lord of Darkness challenges him,
His wrath shall shatter the sun.

Sacrifice shall be his meaning,
Great wisdom is he
Knowing secrets dark to Lera,
Touching hearts

Run through the stars ever after
Roam the hills and the loch ever after,
Not a mortal or immortal,
Born a Healer and a king.

Chapter 7 - He Shall Flee
[Image here]

Zaroshii's feet thudded the hard moor. It was two weeks since they had left the mountains behind. Zaroshii could not helping but thinking that they had much started a new life, a new clan. Thistle, Zaroshii, and Kuva and a grey stranger who looked somewhat weak called Eyn had joined him in his quest. Their small pack was demorcatic, but all of them seemed to somehow listen to Zaroshii. He was quiet now. He often mulled the prophecy over in his head at night, watching the stars.

The krawk called Eyn stood up gently in the middle of the night. He headed over to a small pool of water, looking over his shoulder. The pack was deep asleep. For Eyn was not actually Eyn. He shed his mind disguise of the weak pale stranger. Keiyne appeared, a krawk Roshi's age, but of Roshi's enemy species, Akacheta. His body was a clear silvery gray, and twinkled with a healthy shine. He was lean, well shaped, and powerful. His ears twitched as Keiyne used the Sight to make a small image appear in the pool. Ayame's face swirled tp the top of the water.
Well?" asked Ayame.
They are fulfilling the prophecy. Just as I thought.
The image of Ayame scowled.
As WE thought, nitwit.
Kei snarled and broke and swiped his claws across the water with a splash. The image dissolved.
