Welcome to the Palace!

Walking along the dusty path through the small village, you catch sight of the palace in the distance, a beautiful, grand building, set upon a hill with the river flowing around it. You decide to go and get a closer look.
After ten minutes of walking, you finally reach the gates. From this view you see it is very old but kept in good condition by the servants of the Royals. You hear a giggle and turn around. Walking up to the palace gates is a young kougra with a group of friends huddled around her. She gasps when she sees you and her friends squeal and run away.
The pretty kougra stands tall and looks you in the eye, "I guess that mother sent you." She says.
You shake your head quickly, "No, no, I'm just a visitor to the Palace!"
She eyes you closely, then smiles, "I am Princess Ambuja. Welcome to my home." You bow but she waves an impatient paw at you, "No, don't do that!" she sighs, nudging the gate open, "Come sit in the courtyard with me." She leads you into the magnificent front garden and settles down by a little stream and paws at a brightly coloured flower.
You sit facing her, "So...can you tell me more about this place?" you ask, eagerly.
Of course!" She beams, "But I'll have to make it quick, I'm not really supposed to have visitors."

My Story

I was born in the early summer and was named Ambuja by my mother who loved lotus flowers, as do I. I was a very important cub as I was the only heir to my fathers throne. My father was a prince and my mother was a florist in the village until they fell in love and were wed.
I had everything I could want but I was a very unhappy cub. My mother and father were very protective and would not let me leave the palace grounds to play with the children of the village. However, my mother got me a nanny called Kavita who was very kind to me and when my mother and father left me in her care she would take me into the village for an hour to play with the other children. I made many friends and was soon very happy.
I grew older and soon I travelled to the village myself while Kavita rested, because she was getting quite old by now. When I was thirteen years old I got some terrible news.

My father had betrothed me to the son of one of his enimies, "To make peace," he said. At first I was unsure but agreed to meet him in the village. I don't mean to sound rude but he was a PIG. He was always showing off or laughing at poorer people or talking like he owned me. But I knew I couldn't get out of a betrothal too easily. I ran all the way home and packed some things. I heard a knock on my door and turned around. There was Kavita. I thought she would tell on me for trying to run away.
But instead, she gave me a locket, "Your parents will get rid of me when they find out I let you go," she said, a tear pricking her wise eyes, "But keep this locket and think of me, won't you?" I nodded and started to cry as well. Kavita took a clean hankie out of her pocket and dabbed my eyes like she'd done when I was a child in tears over a scraped knee, "Quickly now," she said, going with me out of the gate, "Your parents are in the village with the prince's parents." She waved me off as I headed west, into the sunset, "Goodluck, Ambuja!" she called.
Goodbye, Kavita." I whispered, unable to bear a goodbye.

I travelled all through the night, and passed the mountains of the west. I was in a new village now. But I neaded somewhere to stay. Hiding my exquisite clothes, jewels and Kavita's locket in my shabby backpack, I knocked on the first pretty little house I saw and asked if I could be a maidservant there. They accepted me and gave me a room in the attic with their other maidservant, Purva. Purva was an orphan but the nicest girl I ever met. When they asked me who I was, I said that my name was Kavita and I was an orphan like Purva. Working there was tough and it took me a while to get used to working. Purva was a great friend but she asked so many questions about myself that I often got confused and said the wrong thing...But I was quite happy there, enjoying my new freedom, even though I was a servant.
But then one day, me and Purva heard a commotion in the center of the village whilst working on the garden so we went to investigate. To my horror, it was Harshul, one of my father's men, and he had been sent to look for me. I ran back to the house and hid in the parlour, pretending to scrub the floor. A few minutes later, Purva came to find me and then she helped me scrub in silence.
After a few moments she said, "You are the Princess they are looking for, aren't you?"
I nodded quietly, "I can't go back." I breathed, so the house owners in the next room wouldn't hear, "I'm betrothed to the most awful prince."
Purva looked very serious, "I've heard of the prince. His name is Ranjeet and his family are poorer than your father must think. He doesn't even have a single soldier. He will probably take over your kingdom if you do not go back home and warn your family." I thought about this.
Then I understood, "Of course, Purva!" I hugged her tightly, got my things and left for my true home to reclaim my rightful place.

I arrived at the Palace early in the morning and strode up to the big wooden doors, dressed once again in all of my fine jewels and cloth with Kavita's locket around my neck. I was greeted with lots of suprise and tears and hugs but I had no time for that, "Where is Kavita?" I asked.
Mother looked worried, "We sent her away to live in the village the night you left. She died a few weeks ago."
I gritted my teeth and held back my tears, "Father, I will not marry Prince Ranjeet. He is a liar, a pig, penniless and plans to take your kingdom."
Father looked confused but would not be told I was a liar, he sent Ranjeet and his family away, banished from his lands.
You are back for good, now?" asked Mother, hugging me tightly.
Of course." I said. "But I'd like a new maidservant, please."

So from then on I lived in the palace with Purva as my "maidservant" but I didn't actually give her any work, we just were like friends who live in the same house. We never heard from Ranjeet again and I'm glad.
Every week I visit Kavita's grave and lay down lotus flowers and little paper hearts for her. I never thought that the night I left the palace I was saying goodbye to my nanny forever. But I always wear her locket and think of her.
