A Faintly Glowing Cave

You have been walking through the woodland for quite some time. The trees are closely grouped together, a mixture of old and new, the roots trip you up. The ground is covered with a type of moss, no grass could grow in this enviroment. As you walk, you can see dimly between the trees that the land suddenly shoots up from the earth, a giant clifface, if not for your keen vision you would have plowed straight into the natural wall.

You reach the clifface, and begin to walk along it, holding your arm against the rough stone to steady yourself. Eventually, you come across a cave. Normally, you would have straight straight by it without a second glance, but this cave was peculiar. A faint, blue glow was emanating from within in, pulsing slowly like a heartbeat. You stand on the mouth, and call in carefully if anyone is there, ready to bolt should something unfriendly come hurtling out.

The glow begins to move, drawing closer and closer to the cave entrance. You should feel nervous, but you realize with a dull awareness that you don't; the calming blue light surely can't be harmful?

The light finally reaches the cave, and to your surprise a Lupess is the origin of the light. She looks up at you with a bright smile, her hooded eyes glowing eerily. She has blue spots of varying shades lining her back and the tip of her nose, they glow faintly as well. Her fur is varying shades of grey and black. Welcome stranger, she says, her voice light and songful. Have you been travelling long? Genuine concern marred her pretty face.

You nod, your aching feet and back protesting loudly at being made to stand for much longer. Please, do come in then. It's much warmer once you're in the main chamber, and I have food if it piques your interest. And with that she turns on delicate paws, and trots lightly back into the cave. You follow, your stomach sending up its own complaints as you realize how hungry you actually are. You follow the Lupess down the corridor big enough for you to stand up in if you bent over, the glowing lupine the only thing stopping you from bumping your head on sudden jags lining the walls and ceiling. You reach a thick dark curtain drawn in front of you, and the stranger grips it in her small teeth and drags it across. She steps into the main chamber and turns, sitting as she waits for you to step inside. As you do, your gaze is drawn to survey the large space.

The 'main chamber' is spacious, and you have plenty of room to stand up straight in. A Friendly Glowing Lamp hangs from the ceiling, hanging on an old tree root jutting down slightly, and along the walls are differing Christmas lights, throwing the room in a beautiful array of multiple colours. An old maroon carpet sits on the floor, and several small tables and counters line the walls, which have many paintings drawn directly onto them.

The Lupess draws the curtain back across the entrance, blocking the wind and you immediately begin to warm up. In the center of the room, a segment of carpet is missing but covered with stones, and a small, compact fire burns brightly on top of them. A spit sits on top of that, baring a stew pot, which is bubbling enthusiastically.

The Lupess sits in front of the pot, checking into it. A few more minutes she says partially to herself, and turns to you; I was just about to gather some berries for Kupo when you arrived, however, since you are now our guest I believe he can go find his own berries. She said, turning her gaze to a wall, raising an eyebrow. You copy her line of sight, and notice a fat Black Faellie perched on a thick wooden stand. He grumbles a complaint under his breath and takes off heavily in flight. The Shadow lupine turns back to you, smiling winningly, Well, stranger. My name is Alexandiir, but Alex is fine. May I ask for your name? You mumble your name as you march to the fire and sit cross-legged in front of it, warming your hands.

Alexandiir checks the stew again, chunks of appetizing meat and vegetables jump and rumble within the bubbling pot, and smiles satisfactory. She trots to one of the tables and takes two bowels expertly in her teeth, dancing back to you and handing one to you. Your slight indignation at being handed a bowl now marked with slight canine slobber is overruled by your overpowering hunger, and Alex waits patiently as you ladle yourself some wonderful stew. You grumble your appreciation to Alexandiir and she laughs delicately, carefully dipping her own bowl into the stew.

You must have been so hungry, she says when you had your fill of the stew, You're welcome to stay as long as you like. I don't get much company out here, aside from my dear friends of course. You look at her with a puzzled look on your own face, and she chuckles delicately. I'll tell you about them!

Are you alone?

Well, firstly you should know that I am a part of a very small pack of Lupes. There are four of us, with another four distant members whom we don't see very often. On top of those, there are our companions whom we occasionally visit if we're passing by, but mostly it is my pack and I.

I suppose I should start with Havocki. He is technically our pack leader, being the strongest, wisest and oldest. However I must say he very much hates the role, it's very difficult to get him to do much more than organizing hunting expeditions or patrols. Patrols? Oh, yes, this whole woodland and the fields surrounding it is our territory. Don't worry, we don't attack every Neopian who stumbles into it, only if you intend to cause trouble do we step in. Anyway, Havocki is a wonderful Lupe. He has a high sense of honor and justice, and is a very kind person underneath his gruff exterior. He has quite the troubled past, but I shan't speak of it unless he asks me too. Recently he made the descion to travel back to Tyrannia to train his body more, though he has handed the position of pack leader to Ban, we're still loyal to Havoc. Havoc can never truely give up the position of pack leader, not until his dying day. We all look forward to the day when he returns home to us.

Ooh, this little tyke is Ecilo! He's adorable isn't he? Before myself, he was the most recent addition to the pack. He lives on top of the copse outside our woodland in his own little Den. His Den is beautiful, he and his Petpet used Glowing Paint Brushes and dipped their paws in to make the burrow glow and - oh but I do go on, feel free to visit him if you want to see. Anyway, he is quite the energetic scamp. His parents sent him down from a city far away to be toughened up by Havocki, and I can't imagine anyone who can toughen up a Lupe quite like Havocki. But bless the little dear, he's only young so his attention span is rather short. He loves playing around and digging and such, he even dug out his own burrow, which is rather impressive if you ask me.

This Island Lupess is Beltimo. Which is actually her last name. Her full name is Elizabeth Beltimo. Our little woodland backs onto the coast, and Ellie spends much of her time there. Ellie is quite the daydreamer, often zoning out almost entirely to dream of impossible things like flying and swimming indefinetely. She's very sweet though, if a little ignorant. She is completely convinced that she is a Juma, and that her Petpet Timmy (who actually is a Juma) is her brother. She gets very upset if you try to tell her that she's a Lupe so if you do visit her I wouldn't recommend you try to tell her that. Ellie loves shells and shiny objects. She wears the items she finds on the beach, like her plastic hair clip and plastic linked bangles. She actually found some real jewellery, a gold linked necklace and hair baubles, but she doesn't care about the money worth, being equally fond of her cheap plastic ones.

Ban is the most recent addition to our pack. He is very hot blooded and aims to prove himself in all areas of his life, when he heard of our Pack he travelled and sought to usurp the leadership away from Havoc. As I said earlier, Havoc dislikes the role of the pack leader but he accepts it, and will fight for it. Ban and Havoc fought tirelessly for a long time, and Havoc did eventually beat him, but due to exhaustion and a lucky fallen log. Ban accepted his defeat with grace, but the fight caused Havoc to realize he needs to train again in the harsh homeland of Tyrannia. So for now, Ban is our pack leader until Havoc returns. Ban is much more of an enthusiastic leader than Havoc, and he gets along splendidly with Ecilo, if he is a bit flirty with the ladies of our pack.

Chrysona is an interesting Lupess. Her pelt glows orange like red hot coals in the flame. She is a rather elusive and a recluse; claiming that all those who come into contact with her eventually get hurt. She isn't technically a part of our pack, she travels far too much for that, moving from one place to the next without staying too long. But when she visits, she is always happy to see us. Her Petpet, a Fire Kazeriu by the name of Havelock seems to be the polar opposite to her, burning bright blue flames that is cool to the touch but his personality is wild and extreme enough to rival Eli when she goes out of control. Last I heard of Chrysona, she was travelling around Mystery Island, apparently her main goal being to visit the still active volcano situated there.

Rocky and Demardrio

These are my children. Rocky is the White Lupe and the eldest, Dem - or Demmy as I call him - is the black one with the blue stripes, the youngest. They're twins, but they couldn't look less alike. It's the same with their personalities too, they're the polar opposites. Rocky is a fighter, prefers to settle differences by fighting rather than discussion. He's out going and bold. Demmy is meek and quiet, excellent with words and an enthusiastic reader. Despite their opposite personalities, they couldn't be closer.

When Rocky grew up he left home to train to become a strong Battledome fighter. Demmy, quite distraught at suddenly being apart from his brother, left with him a couple of days later. They're currently travelling around Neopia. They send me letters every week via Rocky's Petpet, Fallen the Ghostkerchief. They tell wonderful tales of their adventures. Rocky fights regularly in the Battledome, and Demmy is on his way to becoming a scholar. They still visit when they're passing by. I love seeing them, I often wish I could travel with them, but what child wants their mother following them everywhere, especially since they're all grown up now.

But what about you?

You're not sure if you were really that interested in listening to this Shadow Lupess talk about her companions whom you've never met before, but you listen intently anyway; partially because she was very kind to give you some food and shelter out of the cold, but you never know; there might be a quiz on it later! You question Alex about herself, she was enthusiastic to talk about her friends, but what about the glowing Shadow Lupe?

Alex smiles at you modestly, I don't like to appear vain if I just blabber on about myself immediately, she said, looking away from you, if Lupe's could blush she would no doubt be blushing now. I will tell you more about myself if you're interested though? You are, you're rather curious about her glowing spots that cast pretty blue dots on the walls and shift when she moves. Well, alright then.

Parents?

You take all of this information in, and come to the realisation that Alex is a very lonely Lupe. She surrounds herself with friends because she doesn't have a really family. That's how it appears to come across anyway, you decide to ask her about it.

My parents? Alex is shocked by the question. Her demeanor suddenly shifts from the bright, happy looking Lupess to a solemn looking one, even her spots seemed to dim in sadness. Well, let's see. My mother and father are both long gone. She chuckles lightly at your expresion; Old age, don't worry. I remember my mother being a kindly Speckled/Glowing Lupess, that's where I got my spots from, you see? My father was a Shadow Lupe. I have very fond memories of my parents, they were loving as parents should be. When Ardrio moved away, they bought a Crokabek named Quincy for me so I wouldn't get lonely, Sadly, dear Ecilo got into a bit of a fight with him so Quincy left me. The the sweet dear offered me his own Petpet, Kupo, who was very happy to to stay with me. Kupo loves my cooking, and I always find the nicest berries for him.

From the dredges of your memory, you recall that it is very rare for Lupe's to have children in singulars. You ask her about any siblings. Her look changes again, she is gazing at a wall, reliving some kind of memory. The sadness that seemed to take her before is gone, but replaced with a cold detachment at the mention of siblings. I have several siblings -two brothers and a sister if I remember correctly- however, in my old pack it was customary to send any *ahem* extra puppies away so the pack wouldn't become overcrowded. The first born is kept, in our case that was me, and the rest are allowed to grow up long enough that they can be useful to other packs who are lacking in members. I can't say I know where they are now, I probably wouldn't even recognize them if I saw them, and chances are they'd probably hate me for being the first born. Her sadness returns, stronger than before, her spot's glow is almost entirely gone, making the small dots look grey instead of blue.

Love interest?

A terrible sadness grips Alex now, and her spots glow is gone entirely. Even though the Lamp, Christmas Decoractions and the small fire on the makeshift stove keep the room well illuminated, you suddenly feel as if you've been plunged into darkness. The glow was comforting, and while blue in colour they felt so warm. Now that it was gone, you miss it immediately. You regret asking her about any love interest immediately.

No. Not anymore. Rocky and Demmy's father holds my heart, and always will. He was a wonderful Pirate Lupe; strong, brave, righteous. He sailed the seas with a large crew of other burly men. He was by no means a top ranking offical, but he didn't need to be. He was one of those men who could convince people with sweet, simple logic. I was very used to going so long without seeing him, but I haven't seen him for many years now. Of course, I have to assume the worst, seaman wives have too, so we don't spend our entire lives cooing for our love on the shores. I have moved on ... Mostly. I can now think about him without my heart breaking. But I can never again love anyone else like I loved him.

Alex falls silent and still, she looked so small and thin without her glowing form and smiling face. She remained quiet for a several minutes, you call her name but she doesn't respond. A sudden whoosh of wind gusts over your head, and a sharp click knicks your scalp. You raise your hands defensively, but the threat has already gone to sit beside Alex. It's Kupo, the chubby Faellie Petpet. He has a small pouch fastened around his chest, filled to the brim with berries and as he landed next to Alex, some spilled out onto the floor.

Alex remains silent looking without seeing at the opposite wall as Kupo removes his pouch and perches himself on top of her head. He whispers something to her, for several moments, too quiet for you to hear. But you know now not try and listen or interrupt, you know the damage you've done.

Then, a burst of blue illuminates the chamber, and Alex's glow is back again. You release a pent-up breath out in relief, you don't know what Kupo said but whatever he said worked. You go to speak but Kupo throws a sharp glare out at you from his grey eyes. Alex blinks slowly, and looks at you, smiling kindly.

I'm sorry about that. She says, you're quick to apologize yourself, but she merely shakes her head. No, I shouldn't get sad about my poor family anymore. I'm very lucky for the friends I have, and I shouldn't have to be the burden of my troubles.

Kupo had landed back on the floor, scooping his escaped berries back into his pouch. Alex nudges him softly with her paw; Go on, introduce yourself, Kupo. The Faellie turns to you, still glaring, and murmurs a hello. With that, he picks his pouch up in his little paws and flaps heavily down a different tunnel.

Alex laughs, the tone light and wonderful. I'm sorry about him. He doesn't take very well to strangers, rather protective of me you see. But he's a wonderful companion, even if he is a bit lazy. A mischievous grin spreads across her face, her eyes linger at the tunnel Kupo had flown and disappeared down, I mean, have you seen how big he's gotten? I think I'll have to get him to get his own berries from now on, give him some exercise. A loud mewl of protest echos from the tunnel, eliciting another chuckle from the Shadow Lupess.

Faerie Magic

This is Kupo, my dearest new friend the Black Faellie. He's a bit chubby isn't he? I blame myself, I enjoy going out and hunting. Finding the food he likes - berries, nuts, mushroom and certain flowers - is like finding a needle in a needle-stack, which is exciting for me! He's gotten a lazy streak from Ecilo, so with me getting his food for him he's gotten quite chunky.

His fur is strange isn't it? He's from Faerieland you know? I think the magic must leak about and the Petpets absorb it or something. When I first received Kupo, he was a normal coloured yellow Faellie. He nuzzled my nose to comfort me, and he glowed beautifully. When the light died away, he was this Black Faellie, and seemed to adopt my glowing tendancies.

There's quite the story behind this little guy. Not long ago, Kupo belonged to my dear Ecilo. Before Kupo, my Petpet was a Crokabek named Quincy. One day while Ecilo and Kupo were visiting; Kupo and Quincy got into an argument, which broke out in a little scuffle. Ecilo rushed to defend his Petpet, which I do not blame him for. But when it was over, Quincy's wing was broken and his pride scarred. Quincy left me then. A time later, Ecilo informed me that he was with a new family. Though I am deeply sad for his leaving, it was probably for the best. Ecilo and Kupo were distraught with guilt, and stayed with me for a while. I got upset, of course, and the stayed beside me. That was when Kupo asked Ecilo if he could stay with me. I worried for Ecilo being all alone, but he assured me he would be fine and discuss it with Havocki on their next meeting. Kupo's mind was made up anyway, and that's when the little dear nuzzled me, and transformed.

I asked Havocki about this after it happened. He told me that Petpet's take after there owners. If the owner is a dark and solemn person, then chances are the Petpet will be as well. Rarely, they will be the polar opposite. Very few ever retain their original personalities. Petpets get bounced around a lot, so they need to be flexible if they're to get along with their Neopets. Havocki did mention that it was unusual for Kupo to change his fur colour as well, but he suspects for the same reason as I that it might have something to do with his being a Faerieland Petpet, which is full of loose magic.

Adoptables

None, but dear Ecilo has some very cute Lupe Adoptables and Mithiya is finally home so she can host her own Cybunny Adoptables!
