Hey, guest. Before you read this, I'd just like to say that, yes, I know there are some quote marks missing. For some reason, Neo coding doesn't allow quote marks after the 'br' code. I hope this doesn't make things impossible to read XD

Story
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

And that's the last time anybody ever saw the great Kalivso. Rumor has it his ghost is still sometimes seen prowling the shores restlessly; his hunger for Maraquans still strong," concluded the story teller. The Maraquan Draik smiled as the young children around him gasped and began exchanging curious whispers. They would go home and, most likely, tell their parents about the story they had heard. They would then be told that it was only a story and not to worry. But older Maraquans knew that everything in the story of Kalivso was the absolute truth.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

A Maraquan Kyrii swam around the dark coral reefs quickly. It was a young Maraquan lad, just around the age of seven. He had gotten lost from his school group that had gone to look at peculiar coral growth. Now that he was alone in a dark area of underwater caves, his teacher's warning rang in his mind clearly.
Watch for the monster Kalivso," she had said, "he hunts down stray Maraquans and gobbles them up!" Her students had just rolled their eyes, thinking that she was only trying to scare them into staying in a group.
The Kyrii shivered. The water down here was colder than the water he was used to. His attention became focused on something else when he heard the soft movement of water behind him. He whirled around, orange eyes darting around to look at everything nearby. His vision caught two very faint violet eyes glittering back at him through the darkness before they disappeared, the feeling of shifting water around him.
He perked his ears to try and catch any sound of whatever creature was near him. Could it be the fabled Kalivso? The Maraquan Gelert with a heart cold as ice and black as the night sky?
Another shift of water movement alerted the Kyrii to move. He pumped his fins, taking off at an incredibly swift place. A deep black shadow followed him. It, too, had a fin and a slim body built for speed swimming. Or, the Kyrii gulped, hunting prey in the water.
Those brightly colored eyes were watching him carefully. The shadow shifted its tail and dove deeper into the water where the Kyrii could not see it. A coldness seemed to creep into the Kyrii's heart. A normal Maraquan would not try to remain hidden while following him.
It had to be Kalivso.
The Kyrii sped, taking cover in a small underwater cave. He shuddered, but remained silent, hoping that the creature would pass him up. It was quiet for a minute or two and the Kyrii released a small sigh, relieved that the terror was over. The sigh alerted something else in the cave though and, soon enough, a dark figure against the wall that the Kyrii had thought to be a shadow was staring at him with cold purple eyes. He gasped and tried swimming back.
The shadow-like thing moved swifter though and the last thing the Kyrii ever knew was fear.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Something must be done!" An adult Maraquan Kougra yowled over the roar of the crowd. It was a few days later and word of what had happened to the young Kyrii had reached Maraqua.
Several Maraquans yelled in support of the Kougra, looking up at an eldery Maraquan Zafara.
The Zafara nodded her support, "Yes, but what can we do? Kalivso is swift and cunning. Nobody can defeat him," she said.
The Kougra looked up fiercly, being a mother herself, she felt even angrier at what had befallen the young Kyrii, "We'll send our best warrior after him! Stocked up with only the best Maractite weapons!" The crowd cheered in agreement.
The Zafara swept her gaze over the group, "But who is willing to go?" She asked.
The crowd fell silent. All of the Maraquans exchanged uneasy glances before looking to the ground. Everyone was too afraid of the undefeated Kalivso.
A young Maraquan Krawk raised his hand when he saw nobody else would volunteer, "I'll do it!" He announced.
The Zafara smiled, "What is your name, young lad?" She asked, humoring his courage.
Nyanai," he answered, looking a little embarrassed now that all eyes were on him, "And I am willing to go defeat this creature," he said strongly.
There was a moment of silence before cheering broke out. Nyanai was young, but he had fought well in the past wars. The Maraquans were definitely in support of him.
The elderly Zafara nodded, now she was entirely serious, "Go to the battle store and ask the Acara there for his best weapons. Curtosy of Skueye," she said, "You leave tonight." Nyanai nodded before he hurried off to the battle shop, some of the crowd following him.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Nyanai swam as silently as he could around the dark maze of rocks, coral, and caves. He held a Maractite dagger in one of his hands and a thick sheild in the other. He hadn't yet caught sight of the monster. The Krawk looked around for a pebble and took one from just below his fins. He tossed it down a cave, waiting as he listened to the sharp 'plinks' of the pebble as it hit the rocks in the cave. Then there was a duller noise as it came in contact with something not rock.
Nyanai held his breath, hold his Maractite items steadily. He could practically sense something shifting irritably in the cave. A soft hissing sound was picked up by his ear slits and he readied himself, holding the sheild up.
A figure so dark that it was almost black swam from the cave, its every movement filled with malice. It was glaring at Nyanai through deep violet eyes that contained a cold fury.
The Krawk took a deep breath to try and relax himself. This was Kalivoso.
Kalivso's jaws parted and he let another hiss escape his mouth, a Hissi-like tongue tasting the air. He shifted his forelegs a bit and shook his tail, suddenly swimming straight at Nyanai. The Krawk barely remembered to put up his sheild. Kalivso's claws lashed down on his sheild with frustration before the Gelert sped off to try another attack.
Nyanai waited where he was, sneaking a look at the sheild. Maractite was a light, yet iron strong material...and Kalivso's claws had left deep marks in it. He shook fearfully, imagining what those claws could do to him.
He just felt something swimming at him a split second close to too late and moved to the side hurriedly as Kalivso sped past, tearing at the empty water with his strong jaws. Now that the Gelert wasn't hiding, Nyanai could see that he wasn't as large as fable had said. Kalivso was almost average size with darker colored fur. Nyanai allowed himself a small smile. If this Gelert's fur had been the light purple of painted a Gelert's, he would have been insulted. Kalivso's fur was off-color from the paint brush Maraquan Gelerts, meaning he was a true Maraquan creature.
His moment of satisfaction was destroyed though when those strong jaws snapped dangerously close to his neck. Kalivso had missed his mark again. Now it was Nyanai's turn to go on the offense. He swiped at Kalivso with his dagger. It moved through the water perfectly, as if there were no water at all.
The Gelert, not being used to his prey fighting back, wasn't expecting the attack and shrieked as his torso was slashed. He recovered quickly, though, and swam down into the darkness.
Nyanai dove after, ready to attack again. Kalivso hissed when he realized that his prey was following him to attack again. He whirled around quickly and shot at Nyanai, but had misjudged his distance and swam under the Krawk.
Nyanai struck the underside of Kalivso's thrashing tail hurriedly before swimming back to avoid being hit by the strong tail. Kalivso snarled at him, lashing his tail through the water before retreating to the higher water. He shreiked again though when he realized the Krawk had gotten ahead of him and had bitten into one of his forelegs.
Kalivso writhed in the water, trying to get the Krawk off. He growled at Nyanai the whole time, taking false snaps at his face to try and get him off. Nyanai just moved as Kalivso bit at him, meaning to strike. The Krawk pulled his dagger arm back, ready to deliver the final attack.
He stopped when something sky blue swam between himself and Kalivso. A flash of white followed and he saw Kalivso's unconscious body snatched up quickly by a beautiful water faerie.
She smiled at him, "If it's all the same to you, Nyanai, I would prefer if you did not kill him," she said.
Nyanai blinked, shocked momentarily, "Erm...who're you, how do you know my name, and why?" He asked.
The faerie chuckled softly, "I am Azwhin and I'm one of the water faeries that watches over all Maraquans. I know all of the Maraquans names. I don't want you to kill Kalivso because, as he is a true Maraquan, it's still my duty to protect him," she explained.
Nyanai gawked at the faerie, how could she defend this creature? "He's eaten many of our citizens!" He exclaimed.
Azwhin nodded saddly, "I am aware of that. But you mustn't destroy him," she murmured.
But what can we do? I can't just let him go on living!" Nyanai said, still shocked that this faerie wouldn't let him deliver the final blow and be done with it.
Azwhin placed a hand on the front of Kalivso's head, "I have an idea. I can make him forget everything and release him to live in Neopia. I can't get rid of his memories of his life as Kalivso, but I can mask them. Unless he's triggered by some massive mind stimulus, he should have no reason to return here. Maraqua will be safe," she said.
Nyanai nodded, "Alright. That sounds fine," he agreed.
There was another flash of light as the faerie preformed the spell. When the light cleared, Nyanai could see a few changes Kalivso had gone through. His almost-black purple fur had faded so it was a gentler shade of purple. His tail had grown thinner and he had lost the green fringe on his forelegs. Speaking of legs, Kalivso now had a pair of backlegs, suited for above water life.
Azwhin smiled at Nyanai, "I'll take him up to the shore now. You may return to your town. Tell everyone you vanquished Kalivso, though. They too, should try and forget. I don't want any Maraquans attacking Kalivso when he has no idea who he even is." Nyanai made a small bow to the faerie, "Alright, and thank you," he said before swimming off quickly to tell the other Maraquans of Kalivso's supposed defeat.

-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Azwhin peered over the top of the water, making sure to also keep Kalivso's head above water. She had also given him lungs and he now needed to breathe above water. Her tail moved slowly as she made her way over to the sandy shore. She hoisted Kalivso onto the sand, making sure the tide wouldn't pull him back in. She sensed the presence of a Neopian and dove under the water, but a little ways under the surface so she could observe whatever was happening.
A human, well...almost human, boy had wandered over. Two cat ears replace where his human ears would be. A dark black tail tipped with silver twitched behind him as he crouched down on the sand by Kalivso. He stared at Kalivso for a few moments before resting a hand on his snout. There was a small black flash Azwhin recognized as magic. The Gelert twitched and jumped to his paws, purple eyes darting around fearfully. He backed away, spine arched as he snarled at the boy, not understanding who this Neopian was.
The boy smiled, blue eyes calm as he took a step towards Kalivso, "I'm not going to harm you," he assured Kalivso. He reached out his hand, but stayed where he was. "C'mere," he called, hoping that the Gelert wouldn't run.
Kalivso's eyes narrowed suspiciously, but he wandered over, timid pawstep by timid pawstep. He peered up at the boy and, surprisingly, smiled. For some reason, he felt that this was a new beginning...from what though?
My name is Max. Yours?" The boy asked, flicking some black and red hair away from his eyes.
Kalivso blinked. His name? What was his name? Who was he? And...how did he get on this shore? Had he always been here? A billion questions raced through his mind, but he shook his head to clear it before responding simply, "I have no idea..." He sat down in the sand, tail hitting the ground softly.
Max paused, "Well, I'd be glad to give you one if that's alright," he said, eyes analyzing the Gelert sitting infront of him.
Kalivso shrugged, "I guess some name is better than none at all," he decided. Max nodded, "You remind me of my friend. How does DeviViv sound? Devi for short, I guess," he suggested.
Kalivso's eyes brightened up, "I like that name," he got back to his paws, dipping his head, "Thank you," the newly named Devi murmured.
No problem," Max said, stretching his arms over his head, "Now, you had no name. Are you also homeless?
Devi nodded, paws kicking some sand. He was trying as hard as he could to remember where he was from, but nothing came up.
Max grinned, "This works perfectly then. Would you like to return to Neopia Central with me? I've been searching for a pet anyway," he muttered.
Pet? Neopia Central? Devi would find out when he got there, "I'd like that. Thank you...again," he said, voice filled with gratitude.
Max immediately began walking away from the shore and Devi trotted after, casting one last glance at the vast expanse of water before turning back to the beginning of his future.
Azwhin gave a relieved laugh. Her plan had been a success. She just hoped the Gelert wouldn't return to Maraqua. That would definitely cause a large amount of trouble. Oh well, no use worrying about it now. Both Maraqua and Kalivso were safe. She dove down back to Maraqua, ready to join in the celebration that would undoubtedly be going on.

About Devi
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Neehee :3 Ever since the Maraquan Gelert was revamped, I've really, really, really, really, REALLY wanted one. And it HAD to be male. I've been waiting to see if maybe I could (somehow) find one in the pound. No success. I tried getting one from Neopound, all girls. One male Maraquan Gelert finally did come along though, but it was one of those "If I get "number" n00b mail, I'm keeping him :P". No way was I working my lazy butt for some really awesome application only for him to inevitably be taken down. I finally decided to get one on my own ^_^ ...sorta. My sis is paying for the paint brush XD But hey, each to her own. =3 He's named after one of my other characters that has a similar personality. Anyways, DeviViv is attached to Max, but he's a jerk to him. He can be nice sometimes though. n_n There can also be moments where he starts remembering some of his past, but his concentration usually gets broken by something or other. I rather hope he never remembers everything. How do I know about his past, you ask? Crae knows everything ^_~

Kalivso
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Devi has an interesting like of skeletons. When he saw the little Sklyde in the Halloween Petpet Shop, he instantly ran to buy him. I was with Max and Devi at the time and I noticed Devi momentarily zoning out. I think he remembered something from the bones because, when I asked what he was going to name his Sklyde, he answered with 'Kalivso'. Kalivso is a sweet little fellow. He is often seen following Devi around the house and enjoys curling up to sleep by the fire. ^_^

Meet the Family (Devi Mode)
-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

~*~Crae~*~
Eh...Crae's nice enough. I don't get to see her all that much, but I guess she's alright. She treats Red nicely, so she can't be all that bad. I'm grateful to her for allowing me to stay in her home when she doesn't really know me all that well.

~*~Max~*~
Max is okay. I'm glad that, if anybody found me on the shore that day, that it was Max. He's understanding and doesn't get frustrated that I can't remember any of my past. He's also rather intelligent, so he understands my comebacks and jokes. Which is nice. I still don't know him all that well, but it'll get better.

~*~Red~*~
*grins* Ahahhah...Red's great, he is. He can cheer me up in an instant and he always seems to understand how I'm feeling. He's really nice and acts like a child most of the time. He can be serious, though, and that's when I appreciate his company the most. I'm so glad I was there that day by the Rainbow Pool when Red needed someone like me the most. ^^

~*~Kalivso~*~
Kalivso is so fun to have around. He's incredibly loyal to me and goes everywhere I go. He seems to have more of a curious explorer personality and he's often found snooping in random rooms.

~*~Vinelo~*~
Vinelo is rather odd. He's a timid little Seti that Red and I found in the Haunted Woods. No, we don't know why he was living in the Haunted Woods. We think he must have been abandoned or something. He follows Red around, but runs off the moment he sees anybody else. Something must have happened to him to make him so terrified of nearly everything.
