 Pet Name: Xailania Owner: shaddykins Breed: Pteri About Xailania: The roar of the crowd could be heard for miles over the rolling glades, a solo Fire Pteri was performing numerous difficult flying stunts high in the sky. Several gasps could be heard as the Pteri pulled off a triple twist, flames licking in its wake. Quietly the other contestants watched, shifting uneasily in their perches. Even the Faerie Pteri, who had awed the crowd with her aerial agility and grace, looked uneasy. They had all had their turn, all but one. This lone Pteri waited, nervously as this was her first Pteri Day, and her first appearance in the Annual Flying Championships. “Well that was a fiery show, that’s going to be hard to beat, the judges are looking pleased” Called the Announcer, as the Fire Pteri finished its performance and bowed to the judges. “Ok, now for our final entry for the day, a rather unusual entry but welcome all the same. If the audience will turn to the lake she will begin. Let’s welcome Xailania to the stage!” The crowd applauded and gazed toward the lake in wonder. “This is it” Thought Xai as she dived down into the crystal water. When she felt she was deep enough she turned to face the surface and with a powerful thrust of her tail fin, sprinted upward. Leaping from the water, she flew through the air. Water droplets sparkled around her in the sunlight. Landing back into the water with very little splash, Xai performed a stunning routine of leaps and bounds, twists and turns. Each run more graceful than the one before it. In the fading sunlight her glossy scales shone a blue/grey hue on her final leap. Resurfacing, she turned to the judges table and gave a humble bow but before she could retreat the crowd burst into load clapping and whistles. Several had even risen to their feet, Xai felt her face burn as it turned red. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I now have the results from the judges. And with a unanimous decision this years Pteri Flying Championship winner is…Xailania! Come on over and receive your award.” Blushing, Xailania swum over to the lakes edge where the Judges were waiting to meet her. “Speech! Speech!” The crowd chanted. With a few encouraging smiles from the Judges, this is what she said. “When you hear the word “Pteri”, what are the first things that you would associate with it? Wings adorned feathers perhaps? Maybe it would be the serene grace of flight like that of the Golden Pteri? Or would the sharp talons of the dreaded Black Pteri or Down-for-Maintenance Pteri spring fearfully to mind? In any case, fins would not be among your first thoughts. My name is Xailania, you can just call me Xai. I am proud to be a Maraquan Pteri. I may not have wings, but my fins are just as able. The oceans of Neopia are my skies; I slip through its embrace as any other Pteri would in the sky. Thank you, it has been an honour to be allowed to compete. Happy Pteri day to you all!”
