About Maani_of_Fire:

Once there was a little dragon named Maanorthan. He wasn't big, and his flame breath wasn't hot enough to melt iron - disgraceful. But his scales shone bright red, blindingly, mind-bogglingly red. And his dragon's flame caught, even with very little flame, and burned for so long some called it Everburning.

In the land of the dragons, this was a high compliment. However, Maanorthan didn't take it very gracefully. He began to brag of his flame and his flying skills and his color, and his pride shone brighter than his red, red scales.

Maanorthan had never been social, but soon his inflated ego lost him all his friends save one: a female white as promises and shimmering as tears. Her name was Image, but she nicknamed all the other dragons, so they called her Ima in return. She alone gave Maanorthan any familiarity at all (except for "Everboasting"), calling him Maani.

Image often told her Maani to refocus. "The comfortable is more important than the flashy. Stop trying to prove yourself to others and find the confirmation within your heart," she begged him.

But Maanorthan brushed off her warnings. He loved the spotlight and didn't notice the growing exasperation and annoyance of the other dragons.

When out flying one day, Maanorthan was showing off his wing acrobatics when he accidentally bumped into Image. The collision jarred her off balance and sent her smooth white form plummeting to the forest far below.

Maanorthan stared down at his only friend in horror, her distress call filling his ears and his head. He realized, in that split second, that he couldn't live with himself if he had hurt her. He screwed his bright eyes shut, folded his glittering red wings, and plunged after his Ima.

After a few seconds listening to the wind whistle, his suicide resolve faded. What if Image needed his help? He couldn't be so selfish now, plunging to a glorious death and leaving her stranded. Maanorthan opened one eye just in time to see his friend catch herself and beat for altitude. Could he do the same?

Like a shot, Maani unfurled his wings. But he had waited too late to slow down. A tendon in his right wing snapped and he crashed ignominiously in the forest below.

He hung his head and moaned, sprawled halfway up a tree. What a fool he'd been, risking his own life and others' for the sake of showing off. And now he hurt badly, and deserved it.

The land of the dragons appreciates justice. It dealt some now.

Maanorthan's scales faded from bright and scintillating to dull, matte red fur. His ears became long and floppy. He shrunk, and worst of all, his wings simply evaporated. All his beautiful pride... gone.

A dragon without wings is nothing, he thought despondently before everything went black.

But Maanorthan was wrong. A dragon without wings can be something. It can learn something, a lesson about life. A dragon that has lost his wings through pride can regain them through friendship.

A pet was born that day in Neopia, worlds away. It had long, floppy ears and matte red fur. But it still kept its ability to kindle everburning flames, though this time they were the kind called friendship and love.

It was a dragon without wings.
It was a Zafara.
His name was Maani.

*Are you sure you want it that way, Maani? I know it's all make-believe, but don't you think that's a bit far-fetched?
*Who said I made it up, Mom?
