Pet Name: Siremis
Owner: butterflybandage
Breed: Gelert

About Siremis:
He pulled his cloak tight against his neck, hiding his face beneath the heavy hood and meditating on the place he’d soon call home. He just had to get there.

The night was abysmally dark, and Siremis was unable to see even a few inches in front of his eyes. He was following his instincts, looking for signs that would point him in the right direction. He had dreamt long ago of a small village full of people—full of family—and he couldn’t wait.

He just had to get there.

Siremis knew he was a monster. He had been abandoned when he was an infant, tossed into the woods and left alone; only the lights from hundreds of little Lightmites kept him company, kept him hopeful. They did not leave until the morning, and they stayed with him every night until he didn’t need their comfort any longer.

He knew something must’ve been rooting for him, because he survived that moment, and he survived worse, and now he was surviving the trek back home. He truly felt in the deepest, most sincere parts of his soul that his parents didn’t want to hurt him; they had to do what was needed to protect him. He wanted to pull them into a warm embrace, kiss his mother’s cheek and shake his father’s hand and say, “Thank you. Thank you for saving me.”

He just had to get there.

After letting his thoughts drift to what he would say to his parents and wondering how he would be welcomed home, Siremis realized his hands were glowing yellow; there was something in the distance casting this light, and it wasn’t the sun or the lantern of an inn. He looked around for a weapon, but there was none—he was alone on a deserted stretch of cobblestone road with an unknown entity before him.

Siremis neared the lights, hands raised in defense, eyes fliting back and forth on constant guard. He wasn’t afraid, but he was certainly curious. The night had been dark for so long; there hadn’t been much moonlight or starlight in all the years he’d been alive … except for …

The Gelert lowered his hands as he approached the brightest light of all. He reached forward, gently offering his glove as a perch, and the small Lightmight happily obliged. It stood on his hand and flicked its tail, light splashing across his face and hands.

“Are you—the one from my youth?” he asked, voice shaking with awe and joy. “Are you the one who kept me safe?”

The Lightmite did a flip, and nuzzled his gloved hand. It suddenly buzzed away, stopping a few feet in front of him and spinning wildly. Siremis pushed through the hundreds of Lightmites that surrounded him, and asked, “Are … you going to lead me home? To my family?”

The Lightmites danced, whizzing excitedly around him. Siremis chuckled at their silly behavior, but his heart swelled with hope. “Shall we go?”

He followed the cobblestone path, illuminated by the hundreds of Lightmites he had known in what felt like a past life—here they had waited for him, knowing he would return. Here they had waited to lead him back home. He was going to see his family again, and they would make amends, and he would no longer be a monster.

He just had to get there.
