Pet Name: Bistrial
Owner: kt_roo2
Breed: Krawk

About Bistrial:
My name is Bistrial, and I’m a Krawk, of course! I’m not really your average Krawk, either. For one, I’m very short, smaller than even most Krawk petpets! Due to this, I think a lot of Neopets look at me as a petpet despite me acting more like a Neopet. As a young Krawk, I took a visit to the fungus cave and I look much different than I did back in those days. I’ve grown bigger since then, if you can believe it!

The other thing that sets me apart is the color and design of my scales. I consider myself a Darigan Krawk, but not much of my looks really match a Darigan Krawk. I don’t have wings, most of my body is colored dark grey and…I have ears! I’ve never met a Krawk with ears quite like mine, but I can hear much better than others because of them!

It took me quite a while to come to terms with what set me apart from the rest of my kind. It never really sunk in until I one day, many years ago, met a Darigan Bori that seemed to feel similarly about how different he was. If you’ve got the time, how about I tell you the story?

I used to be a big prankster, it made me feel an amazing rush to pull pranks on other Neopets. I lived for that rush, I’d wake up in the morning plotting out intricate pranks with little to no regard about how it made others feel. I’m able to run quick, and because of my small size it was easy to hide from a Neopet that wasn’t too thrilled with my work.

On this particular day, I remember looking in awe as I admired my handy work. I had set up an intricate prank to trip an innocent Neopian with a thin wire, which connected to a big bucket of paint that I had placed in a tree. I was so proud of myself, it was my best prank yet. Some unsuspecting Neopet was going to be changing color today!

I spent a long time watching, waiting for some innocent bystander to walk beneath my trap for them. After having waited for hours, I finally had my prank victim in sight. I thought I would be excited for that moment, but inside myself, I felt guilty.

He was a big darigan Bori, walking slowly with his ears and tail drooping. I could tell that he had been crying from the wet fur around his eyes. In his muzzle, he held a small tote bag. It was unusual for me to feel guilty for a prank in those days, but something about this sad Bori made me feel, for the first time, like a terrible Krawk.

Hopping down from my post at the top of the tree, I ran to the Bori – I would redirect him! At least, that was the plan. I approached him, but he didn’t seem to notice me until I spoke.

“Hey kid, you look a little down. Something wrong?” I asked him, trying my best to seem concerned for him. I wasn’t used to trying to help anybody. Half the time, I was just ignored anyhow.

The Bori looked over at me, sighing. He gingerly placed his bag in front of him after coming to a complete stop. I could tell he wasn’t in the mood to talk, but was making an effort to. “I’ve just had a bad day…”

He looked like he might cry again, and his voice proved my suspicion. “Well kid, I’m all ears. What’s gotcha feeling so down?” I sat down at the foot of his front right paw, looking up at the big guy, and admittedly, I was concerned.

I could see that he was conflicted about whether to respond. He took his time before he spoke, “I get bullied a lot because…” He sat down, sighing once again, and looked ashamed with himself. He stared down at the tote bag in front of him for what felt like ages before continuing, “…because I like plushies. They’ve always been my best friends, you know? They listen, they’re patient, and they love you no matter what. But…today, a big bully of a Darigan eyrie told me that I’m a disgrace to Darigan-kind because of my love for plushies.”

I could see the tears begin to fill his eyes and put one of my paws on his leg in an attempt to comfort him. “Well, what does it matter what they think? I see nothing wrong with you liking plushies. Just because you’re a Darigan pet, doesn’t mean you need to be a big tough guy like most people perceive us Darigans to be.” I spoke, in a matter-of-fact tone. As a Darigan Krawk who was much different from other Darigans too, I understood the pain he was feeling.

“He ripped apart my best plushie friend today.” Is what I recall him saying, but his voice was laced with so much sadness that he was hard to understand. He was shaking, and at that moment, his tears started to roll down his cheeks. He looked at me with deep sadness, before tipping over his tote bag so I could see what was inside.

I peeked in, and my heart felt heavy. Inside the bag was stuffing and patches of fabric. The fabric looked as if it had been lovingly stacked in the bag, though from being tipped over was a little disorganized. This Bori really did seem to love this plushie and was so hurt by his loss. As I looked in the bag, I felt something I never did before. I felt the strong urge to make this Bori feel better. Somehow.

I think I sat staring into the tote bag for a while, trying to think of something, anything, I could do to help him. Then it hit me. I knew how I could help this Bori!

“Hey kid, I know just the thing to cheer you up.” I exclaimed, jumping to my feet and stepping halfway into the bag. “Mind if I take this tote bag?” There was no response, so I backed up and looked up at him.

“U-u-uhm.” He seemed a bit nervous at the thought of it. “H-how could you cheer me up with what’s in this bag? Annie is…” He sniffled, taking a minute to wipe his eyes with his paw. “Annie is my best friend, but she’s all torn to shreds. There’s no way to fix her up…I don’t even have all the pieces, so…”

I smiled at him. “I know I’m a stranger. But… I care. Please, let me see if there’s something I can do to help you.”

He looked at me, still a bit of nervousness in his eyes, but he nodded. “O-okay. If you really want to try…I guess she can’t be in much worse shape than she already is. She’s a griefer plushie, I don’t know if you’re familiar with them…”

“I am.” I reassured him. “And I’m also confident that by tomorrow afternoon, she’ll be a griefer again! Now, I’ll need you to do me a favor before I can do anything.”

The Bori looked at me, concerned. “What’s the favor?”

I smiled and let out a rough laugh, “I’m just a tiny little guy! This bag is small when I look at it next to you, but for me, there’s no way I can carry it all the way home! Any chance you’ll help me carry it?”

I could see a small smile work its way on his face before quickly reverting back to neutral. “Sure, I can help. Just let me know where to go.” He picked up the bag, and the two of us walked back to my home. I made arrangements with him to come back around the same time tomorrow.

After the Bori left, I walked to my next door neighbor’s house and climbed up onto a potted plant she had near her door in order to reach and ring her doorbell. The door opened, and there stood a pastel roo with large blue and purple wings. She looked confused for a moment, before she looked down and noticed me there.

“Oh, Bistrial!” Her soft voice exclaimed, a smile on her face, “What brings you here today? You’ve never visited me before unless it was to pull a prank!”

“Well truth is, I need your help with something.” I began, “I met a Bori today that was feeling really down, Angel, and I need somebody to help me cheer him up.”

The roo, Angel, laughed and said, “Okay Bistrial, I love cheering people up, but I hope this isn’t a trick.”

Angel was very sweet, if there’s one thing about her that everybody knows it’s that she’s good a positive attitude about almost everything. Well, and she’s the best person in town when it came to sewing! And this is why I desperately needed her help. I was thankful she was so kind and, hopefully, willing to trust me. “It won’t be a trick, I promise! Let me explain it to you while we walk back to my home.”

After explaining to Angel the situation, she immediately began helping me piece together the patches of fabric to form the plushie’s shape. There were a few patches missing, though, and this caused there to be quite a few gaps in the fabric. After we had discovered this, Angel went back to her house and returned with a few small patches of fabric. Perfect! These would be exactly what we needed to put this little griefer back together!

I remembered feeling nervous that it wouldn’t be the same, but every time I thought back to that sad Bori I reassured myself that he’d probably just be happy to have his friend back. At least…I hoped so.

With our teamwork, we spent the whole night trying to sew the small patches of fabric back together. By the morning, Annie was back as close as she could be to her original form, and I remember having felt truly relieved. I thanked Angel for her help, and she went back home.

All day I was nervous and excited for the Bori to come back. To see his friend, all put back together…surely he would be overjoyed!!

The time came that the Bori knocked on my door, and I opened it. He was a large Bori for his age, but still managed to fit in my home with plenty of room to spare. He seemed like he was about to ask about it before he noticed Annie sitting on the table in good shape. His eyes lit up, and he smiled excitedly.

“You did it! You really did it! You saved Annie, she’s back to how she was before!” He exclaimed, pulling the griefer into his arms and giving her a big hug.

“Well, not exactly how she was before…” I said with a frown.

The Bori looked at me, still smiling. “She may have patches on her that weren’t there before, but she’s definitely Annie, and she’s just as loveable and cuddly as before! I love it! I love her! Thank you! Thank you!!! THANK YOU!!” He screamed excitedly, looking like if he weren’t crammed in my tiny house, he’d be jumping like a roo!

It felt really good to make this Bori’s day. He had very clearly been through so much, that to be able to make him smile was well worth all the hard work trying to help Angel piece the little griefer together.

“Hey kid. It’s nothing, really. I’m…really happy I could help.” I spoke, and thought for a moment before continuing, “I’ve been a pretty mean guy my whole life. Just like you, I was frustrated by the fact that I didn’t fit the mold. But from helping you, I realized that you can be a lot happier if you don’t let other people tell you who you are. I hope you’ll take that into consideration.”

The Bori looked at me, and I saw a flicker of sadness in his eyes before the happiness returned. “I’ll have to consider it…but thank you for your help! Really!”

After a little bit of small talk, the Bori left my home. I looked out my window, watching him happily walk away. I never learned his name. I never met him again. But he was the Bori that made me understand the feeling of making somebody happy.

Since that day, I only pull small, harmless pranks to make people smile.

As tough as it is to admit, I love seeing people happy.
