Pet Name: JeorgeJetsam
"I have good news and bad news."
"Bad news first," Amargo replies immediately. I chuckle because that's just so typical of him.
"The bad news doesn't make sense without the good news." We both give her a look, so Ash goes on to say, "Hey, I didn't say to pick one first."
"Whatever." Amargo rolls his eyes. "What is it?"
"I think I can make a Jetsam morphing potion. Blue, in fact."
My eyes grow wide. I grin from ear to ear.
"I take back everything I've ever said about you. You're an awesome witch, Ash!" They both flinch at my yelling but they can get over it. I'm happy, I'll be as loud as I want to be.
No more stalking Kauvara's shop or hassling the auction genie. No more waiting at the beach while my all Jetsam gang do cool things in the ocean. No more of those looks they give me when they think I'm not paying attention.
I wouldn't mind changing from my biscuit color either. Ash thinks it's so cute how Amargo and I match. I just wanted to get rid of that pink fur collar, I swear!
I step over to her. I don't know if I was going to hug that weirdo of a Kyrii or give her a high five or something, but I stopped when she raised a hand.
"Bad news, remember? It still isn't cheap. I need the ingredients... and it'll take some time." She looks guilty now. "I'd hate to say this and I do mean really hate it, but I can't afford to do it for free." She looks at Amargo now, because he's the one with money and he's the one who's in charge of me.
My grin disappears. I can't help but let a little panic creep into my voice as I tell him, "Look, Amargo, I'll get it myself. I'll get a job..." I stop, trying to think of what I could do. "I'll be a delivery boy or something."
I can see my friends laughing already, but I don't care.
I get impatient as I wait for him to answer. He looks at me and Ash like he's overwhelmed. Once it all sinks in, his face hardens and I already don't like where this is going.
"We need to have a talk."
I really don't like where this is going.
My hands curl into fists.
"Look, I said I'll pay for it myself!"
Normally he'd get on my case for my tone. Instead he pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs. Somehow that feels even worse.
"Calm down. That isn't the problem."
Ash glances at us both.
"I'll be in my room if anyone needs me," she offers awkwardly. Neither of us say anything to her as she leaves. I fidget, which is so uncool but I can't help it right now. The silence is too tense and he doesn't say anything until we hear Ash's door close.
"The cost isn't the issue," he repeated. He hesitates. "Okay, maybe it's part of it. It's not something we can do right now, but that's not I wanted to talk about."
"Alright," I nod. I'm still not happy but the anger's gone.
"I'm just... Are you sure this is what you want?"
I look him like he just grew two heads.
"Are you kidding me? I've wanted this since I was a kid." Some people would still call me a kid, but whatever. I begin to list off reasons with my hands, "I act like a Jetsam and I was born on Jetsam Day. It's even my dang name! JeorgeJetsam, not JeorgeWocky. What else am I supposed to be?"
"Supposed to," he echoes back, like I just said a keyword. "That's what I'm worried about. Do you actually want to be a Jetsam or are you just going through with it because it's what you're 'supposed' to be?"
I mean to shoot something back, but I sputter instead. I... I've never thought about it. Wanting to be a Jetsam has always been such a big part of me, something that was always there. I looked at all these facts, my name, my birthday, and decided that I was made wrong.
I mean, I must have been. I ended up in the pound.
"And I wouldn't put much stock in 'how you act'. I've seen nice Grarrls and jerk Kacheeks."
"Yeah, you are one," I snicker. Maybe jerk isn't the right word. Crabby. He's a crabby Kacheek.
He rolls his eyes at me.
"The point is, you acting like... well, you, doesn't amount to anything. I'm sure there are other Wockies that like to make a nuisance of themselves," he says wryly.
All I can think of is to bring up the fact that I like swimming, like a lot, but that's pretty flimsy reasoning. So I stare at the floor and say nothing. I keep thinking of half formed sentences, but nothing good to reply with.
I don't know how I feel about this.
His face softens.
"I want you to be sure about this. What if we morphed you and it doesn't feel right? We can barely afford a Jetsam morphing potion; we definitely can't afford morphing back if you change your mind."
"How do I know if I'm sure?"
"I don't know," he sighs. "I think you should try to give being a Wocky a chance."
"I've been a Wocky all my life," I say irritably.
"I mean really give it a chance. Like..." He waves his hand meaninglessly. "Embrace your Wockiness for a while."
"My Wockiness?" I smirk, because that sounds so, so dumb.
He glares at me. He looks funny with that squinty eye of his.
"You know what I mean. Read about famous Wockies, make some Wocky friends. In fact, ditch those other guys."
"I'll try to meet some Wockies, I guess." I don't comment on the last part. He knows that's not happening. Not right now anyway.
"There you go. That's all I wanted to talk about."
"Good," I sigh in relief. "I'm going to take a walk... think things over," I say as I head for the door.
"I still expect you to get a job!" he shouts after me.
"Guh, fine!" I slam the door shut when I step out. I'm ain't looking for one, but I don't feel like starting that conversation after the one we just had.
The cold, dark air is already doing a lot of good. My ears twitch as I hear leaves rustle.
Wocky. Jeorge the Wocky. JeorgeWocky. It's so weird to consider myself as one, instead of a temporarily hairy Jetsam.
I breathe in deep just to make a big puff of cloud when I breathe out. I grin.
Yeah, I could try to be a Wocky for a while.
