Delilah, a small air faerie, squealed with joy. Prince the Kazeriu had come back with only good news - the gifts were being doled out appropriately, people were happy, and maybe Toad was finally getting the hang of his job. Delilah grabbed the unfortunate petpet out of the air and swung him around the room, giggling.
"Oh, Prince! This is great! Finally I may be able to join the Faerie Queen's elite! I'll help protect her - and the rest of Faerieland!" She released Prince, striking a pose, and he flew into a wall. "Sorry," she said, not paying attention. Her creation was brilliant and she twirled around the room proudly.
Her room shook, dust fell into her blonde locks, and she knew he had arrived. She turned, absent-mindedly fixing the gaping hole where most of her wall had been with a new spell. She smiled at the neopet that now stood in the center of her room.
"Well, hello, Toad! You've done excellently recently - I think you're really getting the hang of this job!" She beamed and moved to hug him, changed her mind, and awkwardly patted his head. Toad frowned.
"HUG ME," he pouted, ignoring her praise, and her eyes grew to the size of saucers. She smiled again, this time mostly to cover up her shock.
"Ah, Toad, why? I mean, of course I will, but could I ask why you want a.. hug?" she asked, politely. She scooted away from him, still grinning forcibly.
"OTHER CHILDREN ARE HUGGED. I want a hug too," he said, partially quietly. "When other children are hugged they are happy. I know it," he said, and it was the quietest Delilah had ever heard him.
"You aren't a child, Toad," she informed him, then smiled sweetly. "Why don't you go grant wishes? That'll make you happy, yes? Go on, mommy Delilah is very busy." She turned, then began going through the motions of reading a spell book.
"You're holding it upside down," Prince mentioned. She gave him a pinched smile and flipped it. It disappeared in red smoke. She searched frantically for something to do and settled on rearranging her fluffy pencil collection. Toad was no longer watching. He was out the wall, creating a bigger hole than before.
Prince shot her a look and flew after him, disdainfully flicking his tail in her direction before calling Toad's name. His lithe form disappeared into the blue skyline, but Delilah could still see Toad's great leaps across the soft grass towards the horizon. Ah well, she thought. At least Prince would return soon. The petpet didn't even like Toad, did he?
Neither Prince now Toad returned, but the wailing Delilah received a letter a few weeks later. She tore into the neat envelope and noted that the handwriting on the page certainly didn't match the careful cursive on the outside.
"Dear Delila," she read. She took a fluffy pencil and wrote an "h" in, then kept reading.
"Thank you very much for creating me. I have found a new home. So has Prince. We will grant wishes. Good luck with your Queen.
"From Toad a.k.a. Ethan Frog
P.S. my new mom hugs me."
The letter was covered in eraser marks and scribbles, but the end result was pretty good, Delilah mused. Then she crumpled it up and threw it out, plunked to the floor, and screamed.
Toad hugged Sunny and leapt out through the wall to grant more wishes.
