Pet Name: Zaidiia
Breed: Brown Scarabug

About Scrounge:
It was another long, hot day in the Lost Desert. The sun came up, hot as usual, sending a lot of the regular desert inhabitants into hiding as the scorching heat increased throughout the day. The Horuses were out in force today; circling the skies, waiting for the first critter brave enough to scurry over and reach the little water that was left from the dried up oasis.

I sighed. It had been a long day, but I was still terribly thirsty. Looking up into the skies, I thought that maybe, if I timed it just right, I could slip right past! The only problem, though, was my brightly-colored wings that stood out against the brown shifting sands of the desert. Maybe there's a chance they wouldn't notice? I waited, then waited some more. Suddenly, one of them disappeared entirely! Excitedly, I rushed over to the puddle before... that's when a shadow fell across where I was. There was nowhere to hide. I tried to make myself as small as possible against the sand, waiting for the end to come.

I suddenly heard loud squawking, but then all went silent. Looking up, I wondered what had happened that made the Horus take off like it did. Standing over me was a Neopet I had never seen around here before.

The Pteri smiled wryly.

"Hey there, are you lost? You really shouldn't be out here this time of day; it can be pretty dangerous."

I scowled and clicked my antennae.

"My name is Zaidiia, but you can call me 'Zai' for short. I mostly travel Neopia in search of knowledge." At this, Zai paused for a moment. "How would you feel about a nice new coat for yourself?"

I stared at him quizzically. No one had ever made such a kind offer to me before!

"It's alright; I mean, if you'd rather keep those wonderful flashy colors on your wings..."

I quickly hopped into his outstretched wings. Maybe a nice change of color change wouldn't be so bad? After all, constantly having to duck for cover and throw sand on my wings until larger predators got out of the way was always stressful.

"The Petpet Puddle is a nice distance from here, but it shouldn't take too long. I have a friend who'd be willing to ship us there right quick. Just try not to bug her too much, alright? After all, she is a merchant.

I nodded with understanding.

Zai and I finally arrived in Neopia Central and made our way to the Rainbow Pool. I scuttled around in excitement; I had never before seen so many colors in one spot like this! Every color I could possibly imagine was reflected back into the sky.

"Alright you, we just have to go this way a bit; the Petpet Puddle is over in this direction. I have the perfect shade for you," Zaidiia said as he moved toward the pool. "I think you'll like this particular color."

Curious, I followed close behind him, wondering what he had in store for me. When we both got there, I stood knee-deep in the puddle and closed my eyes.

DRIP. DRIP. DRIP.

"Alright, you can open your eyes now!"

I cautiously opened up my eyes and looked down. I noticed that I was all... brown. I stretched my antennae. All brown with creamy markings. Now, there would be no way that I could possibly be spotted by those cursed predators that were always alerted by my bright, flashy colors. Brown was the perfect choice.

"Alright, since we're done here, I suppose I'll continue my travels and be on my way then..."

I fluttered after him, leaping onto his shoulder and nipping him in his face.

"Yowch!" he yelped. "Well then, if you’re going to come with me, you’ll need a name for me to call you by." At this, he appeared to think for a moment. "You know what? I have the perfect name in mind. How about... Scrounge?"

I stared blankly, not understanding.

"Don’t worry," Zaidiia chuckled, "It'll make sense soon enough, once you've been around me for a while."

Still confused, I decided to ignore that comment. Together, we headed over to the Magical Bookshop to see what we might be able to pick up from the shelves.

Since then I have been with Zai, both to show my gratitude and out of interest in learning the information he picks up from reading. These days, I mostly help him out by sorting out his mess and keeping all of the books, scrolls, and articles organized. It's a chaotic job, but I think it’s worth it.
