Petpet Name: Joff
Owner: minnow
Pet Name: Tomns
Breed: Tyrannian Nuk

About Joff:
"Responsible? I'll show you responsible!" grumbled Tomns as she stumbled into the barn, staggering a little as the immense pile of straw in her paws trembled ominously. With a disgusted grunt the Usul dropped the offending pile on the floor, kicking it into a rough-looking shape onto which she placed an equally rough-looking blanket. Together they made a rough bed. Dusting off her paws Tomns spun around, hands on her waist and glared at the cause of all her problems.

He blinked balefully back at her.

As wide as he was tall, Joff the Nuk struck an impressive silhouette in the gloom of the barn. He had spent the morning sitting in the corner, watching serenely as Tomns trekked back and forth from the main farm to the rickety wooden barn that she had been given the pleasure of fixing, cleaning, and clearing -- all for his benefit, of course. Now the disagreeable creature was looking at his new pallet, then to Tomns, and then back again with an expression on his surly face that said, "You have got to be kidding me."

"Come on," said Tomns, gesturing toward the bed. "Try it." She patted the bed encouragingly, resisting the urge to put her head in her hands as the beast sniffed haughtily in her direction before swivelling around, flicking his tuft of tail disdainfully in her direction as he pointedly turned his back on her -- and his new bed.

Tomns frowned. As she watched the disagreeable creature shuffle around, she tried desperately to remember why she was even trying to care for it.

"I need to be more responsible; I need to be more responsible. And looking after a Petpet makes me more responsible." She muttered her mantra under her breath as she carefully fluffed the straw into a more presentable shape and dusted off the blanket. Once she was satisfied with the work, she turned to look at the wretched animal who was watching her with its beady eyes. Noticing her watching him, Joff quickly turned his head, pretending he hadn't been looking.

"Right, now it's perfect. Try it out." Tomns patted the bed encouragingly, putting on a high-pitched baby voice to encourage the disagreeable creature to sit on his new bed.

Joff snorted.

"That's it!" Tomns growled. Stalking forward, she grabbed him by the hind legs and attempted to drag him onto the bed. Joff let out a frightened squeal, bucking in her arms and dashing manically around the barn, barreling into the bed in the process and sending hay flying off into the air. Tomns looked on in horror as all her cleaning and carrying from the morning were undone in an instant.

"Wicked creature! Look what you've done!" she wailed at the now quiet Nuk. She sank to her knees, burying her face in her bushy tail as she tried to control herself.

"I should have known I couldn't look after a Petpet. I can't do anything right," she mumbled dully dabbing at her eyes as she tried to accept that she had failed. She remained in her position on the floor for a while until she felt a wet snout gently prod the crook of her arm. She looked down to see a pair of large blue eyes gazing serenely up at her. Joff nudged her arm again, wriggling underneath so that he could curl up by her side, her arm lying gently across his back. Slowly she moved her arm back and forth, stroking his wiry fur. It was somehow comforting.

"I'm sorry," she murmured as she stroked his back. "I'm a terrible owner."

Joff snorted, looking at her with a bemused expression on his face and stood up. After shaking himself vigorously he trotted around the barn, pushing the scattered strands of hay with his nose until he had accumulated a reasonably sized pile. He stood on it, treading it until there was a Nuk-shaped dent in the middle and finally flopped down, his head lolling dopily to the side as he gazed meaningfully at Tomns. She gazed at him in confusion until realisation hit her, and she scooped up the blanket from the floor and gently tucked it around him. He promptly shut his eyes and let out a loud snore.

Tomns smiled softly. Maybe this owner thing wouldn't be as bad as she thought.
