It was a night like any other in the Haunted Woods; the wind sang the same familiar howl, the air was damp and cool, the fog playfully rolled along the headstones and the moonlight eerily illuminated my of so familiar surroundings... yet somehow, this night felt different.
I was beginning to lose hope that this disturbance would make itself known, when foreign sounds reached my ears. I flew down from my perch on the graveyard fence and landed upon the Haunted Woods gate. To my surprise an Alabriss appeared gliding through the air alongside a Gobbler. I opened my beak to caw a warning at the strange petpets when out of the fog appeared a familiar sight.
A large blue eyed Halloween Uni emerged from the fog, burning hooves illuminated the path he walked while his onyx mane and tail fluttered in the breeze. Just as my eyes finished following the last hairs upon his tail, a dim blue glow began to emerge from the fog. The form of a ghost uni ventured out from within the fog and took his place next to his companion beside the gate. Suddenly there was nothing but silence. I waited anxiously for what felt like an eternity, when finally the Unis exchanged a glance and then called out into the fog.
Seconds later a third form emerged; his body was a sickly pale green that somehow suited his platinum mane and tail; the light illuminated his Scythe shaped horn and empty glazed eyes. The Zombie Uni slowly made his way to the Gate and greeted his comrades with a nuzzle. "Welcome Home" stated the Halloween Uni, "There isn't a better place in all of Neopia" seconded the Ghost Uni. The two brothers and their petpets entered the gate and disappeared into another wave of fog behind me. I turned mu gaze back towards to the third and final Uni, who to my surprise was gazing upon me.
"Would you like to make a friend today?" he asked. I was silent for a number of minutes and then found myself taking flight from my post of the gate. Before I could reason what I was doing, I had flown down and landed upon his neck. He then turned his head and simply stated "I am glad you chose to join me". I opened my beak to answer him but found myself lost for words; the words finally came to me in a less than eloquent form, "I... I... have never had, well friends. You don't make friends in a graveyard, everyone is well... de-". "Dead?" he asked with a laugh. I felt myself grow hot under my feathers and gingerly smiled acknowledging my mistake.
I found myself breathing a sigh of relief when I felt the lurch of my companion moving forward and passing under the entrance gate. Just as we began to pass through the same fog his comrades had disappeared into minutes earlier, he put any doubts I had at ease. "The good thing about being dead, it that you are on a never ending adventure. I am glad you chose to join me on it." And with that I felt the fog consume us as we slipped away unseen into the cool night.
