Best of the Nest: Avian Petpets

by enkouen

--------

As the vast encyclopedia of Petpets available for Neopians to discover and befriend has expanded over the past two decades (never mind the unique colour choices available for each and every one), choosing the best avian accomplice for your pet may appear a most daunting task. Luckily for fellow bird lovers, I have compiled a list of Neopia's finest flock members certain to make any pet cheep, chirp, and crow with glee! While this collection is by no means comprehensive, it should open your eyes to the benefits of inviting one of the many feathered friends featured below into your Neohome. I definitely didn’t wing this!

     11. Vaeolus

     Availability: Legendary Petpets

     Interesting Colours: Ghost, Island

Eagle-eyed Neopians may recognize this Petpet from the events of the Altador Plot! With the Vaeolus sporting such a dark, intimidating gaze, it’s hardly a wonder why many would want one of their very own. With their im-“peck”-able senses of sight and hearing, Vaeolus are excellent hunters when they take wing. They may not be quite as huggable as the Petpets below, however.. being on fire and all. You may need to resist squishing those big, ol’ paws without a hydrant on hand!

     10. Fleeper

     Availability: Geraptiku Petpets

Interesting Colours: None, because TNT made the Fleeper perfect just the way it is

I hope you don’t mind the silent “tweetment”, because this bird ain’t squawking! Fleepers seldom make a peep(er), and prefer to observe their surroundings in quiet introspection. What could such a sturdily squat Petpet be thinking? We may never know!

     9. Skree

     Availability: Tyrannian Petpets

     Interesting Colours: Water

Dive bombing straight from the skies above sunbaked Tyrannia, the positively prehistoric Skree is not a Petpet for the faint of heart! Their name likely originates from the terrific noise they make at anything that displeases (or alternatively, pleases) them. You don’t want to be on the wrong end of that beak! Still, the Skree’s feathers are uniquely beautiful, and shimmer purple, blue, and green in the light.

     8. Quintilc

     Availability: Fanciful Fauna

     Interesting Colours: Black, Yellow

There are few Petpets as fragile as a Quintilc, but a gentle pet may be able to admire their ornate aesthetic! Painstakingly folded from paper into the shape of a bird, rumour has it that the one to assemble one-thousand Quintilc will be granted a very special wish. Do you have the patience? The immunity to papercuts?

     7. Bikiwan

     Availability: The Neopian Petpet Shop

     Interesting Colours: Cloud, Tyrannian

The Bikiwan is as gentle as it is delightfully round. The pink flower sprouting from its noggin is delicate and gives off a sweet aroma. The rough and rowdy Ownow are natural enemies of the flightless Bikiwan, so it is unwise to mix them together. Not that you’d want to—with its seed-spotted face and short, stubby legs, the Bikiwan is the far cuter Petpet, anyway!

     6. Chumablah

     Availability: Spooky Petpets

     Interesting Colours: Grey, Orange

Click, clack, click, clack.. with those tapping claws, you’ll never lose track of your Chumablah for long! Darigan fans may appreciate the sinister look of this Petpet that is black, purple, and very, very pointy—with no paint brush required! Chumablah are frequently found perched in shadowy graveyards where only the bravest dare venture without due “caws”.

     5. Airax

     Availability: Tyrannian Petpets

     Interesting Colours: Desert, Electric

The Airax is a sharp-taloned, talented bird that can perform mid-air tricks on command. Amaze your friends with its gravity-defying feats before it returns to its rightful place on your pet’s shoulder. There’s no better place for an Airax to perch! Except, perhaps, on a thick leather glove.

     4. Peadackle

     Availability: The Rock Pool

     Interesting Colours: Pirate, Robot

Have you room in your heart for this plump poultry pal? As an aquatic Petpet, Peadackles thrive underwater and need to be kept in a nice, spacious aquarium. Nevertheless, no ordinary tank can contain their signature crow of “Pea-da-doodle-do”! If you like to rise with the sun, a Peadackle may be the perfect alarm clock for you! It’s bright red waddle and long, twirly whiskers are quite charming, too!

     3. Gobbler

     Availability: Advent Calendar in Y8

     Interesting Colours: Christmas, Plushie

A festive favourite, the Gobbler is best known as a symbol of autumn, but make great companion all year round. The red, fleshy protuberance above a Gobbler’s beak is called a snood. Fancy! While technically a retired Petpet, the Gobbler isn’t expensive or hard to chase down (not literally, though—they’re not a fan of fowl play); check the Shop Wizard! Gobble, gobble!

     2. Whoot

     Availability: The Neopian Petpet Shop

     Interesting Colours: Faerie, Mutant

Who goes there? A Whoot, of course! These nocturnal Petpets are proven sensible, wise, and know-it-“owl” partners. Rumour has it that they can sense the presence of none other than the dreaded Pant Devil, to which they let out a loud warning “WHOO!”. If you have any attachment to your belongings, a Whoot may be a solid investment to make!

     1. Weewoo

     Availability: Krawk Island Nippers

     Interesting Colours: White, Rainbow

The Neopian Times’ very own mascot! While their unearthly cries can chill even a sea-seasoned pirate to the bone, their black, beady-eyes and peanut-shaped body are nothing short of adorable and perfect for hugging! The rainbow Weewoo is especially cute—just look that those sweet, rosy cheeks! However, be warned; the pirates at Little Nippers (and Krawk Island as a whole) only deal in Dubloons. If you want a Weewoo of your own to cuddle and adore, plain old Neopoints won’t do!

     Bonus: Spallard

     Availability: Cooking Pot

     Interesting Colours: N/A

If you cross the Wocky-like wail of a Mallard with the wall-eyed stare of a Spardel, you get a... Spallard. These unique, attention-starved Petpets are notorious for crying out for attention. Why aren’t you petting the Spallard? Pet the Spallard. Pet the Spallard right now.

I hope that this guide was egg-citing enough to convince you to take a gander at the many beguiling birds found around Neopia! Thankfully, most of these Petpets are on the “cheeper” end, and shouldn’t break the bank.
