Kaus from A to Z

by aleu1986

--------

In celebration of Kau Day, I have compiled a list of various things concerning the species. Here you`ll find everything from famous Kaus, to notes on artwork, reading tips and customization suggestions.

A

Art

While some Neopet species underwent rather dramatic changes after the conversion, the artwork of the Kau was only changed slightly. The main change was their position, as they shifted from looking left to right.

Avatars

The default Kau avatar which is automatically made available to everyone and doesn`t count in your collection features a spotted Kau. There are four others to collect: Kau Fortune Teller, Kau Starry, Curse of Maraqua – Maraquan Warrior and Magical Kauvara.

B

Battledome stats

On the default petpage for this species, a list of special Battledome stats are listed. Kau Gruff (strength) Herd Flow (agility) and Horn Level (level). As you can see, they`re just a fun and unique way to list your Kaus stats, not unique abilities that give your Neopet an edge in the Battledome.

Bell

While nearly all Usuls wear bows, and Aisha and Ixi have their trademark collars, only four colours of Kau feature a cute, little bell. Gold, Silver, Dimensional and Faerie. The Island Kau wears a necklace. These items can only be obtained by painting your Neopet.

C

Cloven Hooves

Just like Ixi and Moehogs, Kaus have cloven hooves, not round, solid ones like Peophin and Uni.

D

Kau Defender

This yellow Kau is one of the few female members in Defenders of Neopia. She first appeared in the original Defenders of Neopia series during mission 6, when you had to fight Commander Garoo. Her real name is not known, and unlike her fellow female Defender Aisheena, she is not the subject of an avatar.

E

Elegant

The Elegant Kau clothing set consists of gown, collar, pearls and fan.

The pearls and fan might be swapped for other accessories, but the gown and collar in particular are really beautiful and unique. The gown features delicate cross stitches and the collar somewhat resembles a large daisy, don`t you agree? Your Kau will certainly look elegant in this outfit.

F

Fortune Teller

This pink, female Kau is a gypsy fortune teller that appeared in the Lost Desert plot. Her skills in fortune telling and knowledge of the history of Sahkmet proved vital in deciphering tablets and scrolls that held clues leading to the answers to the mysteries of Prince Jazan and Qasala. It is rumoured that later on she joined the gypsies in the Haunted Woods.

Fruit Machine Kau

This male Desert Kau manages the Fruit Machine in Sakhmet, along with a Desert Aisha and a Desert Lupe. This Kau also appeared in the Desert Diplomacy event.

G

Green

A smiling, green Kau is featured on the 11 months shield.

If you love the colour green, you may consider painting/labbing your Kau any of the following: Disco, Glowing, Robot, Speckled and Swamp Gas all feature green of various hues/shades.

H

Herd

A large group consisting only of Kaus is called a herd, just like a group of Lupes is called a pack.

Horns

All Kaus have two strong, solid horns. It is said about this species that cute as they may be, they have those horns for a reason. Kaus are usually friendly, but don`t dare mess with them!

When painted certain colours, the Kaus horns look different such as in Maraquan ones. Instead of their horns being round with the tips pointing towards each other in a semi circle, Maraquan Kaus horns have the form of a jagged, bent questionmark where the tips point outward and away from each other. Tyrannian Kau have an extra horn (or spike) in the middle of their forehead (insert joke about them being a distant, prehistoric cousin of the Uni here) and the UC Desert Kau feature a pair of impressive, extra long horns.

I

Independence

Kaus are highly social Neopets and they prefer being part of larger groups of friends or fellows. They prefer company to solitude and some Kaus may lack independence, needing to learn to get out there and do things on their own without always having companions to lean on.

Idyllic

Similarly to Kacheeks, Kaus love quiet, sunny meadows with plenty of grass and flowers.

J

Jaunty

Kaus are mostly cheerful and lively Neopets.

Jelly

The Jelly Kau is blue (blueberry jelly)? And although it was released prior to conversion it was not grandfathered, meaning no UC version exists.

A Kaus belly jiggles like jelly when they laugh.

K

Kauvara

This starry Kau is probably the most famous of all members of this species. She runs the Magic Shop in Neopia Central, and her business is even referenced on the Neopian National Bank page: "Since any Neopoints you carry with you can be stolen by rabid Mutant Kadoaties or squandered away during a moment of weakness at Kauvara's Magic Shop, the National Neopian is here to keep those hard-earned Neopoints safe!"

Kauvara has run the Magic Shop for over a decade, and will most likely continue to sell and brew her magical, mysterious potions for many years to come. You can even face off against her in the Battledome if you wish – just beware of any vials she may throw your way..

Kauvara is most well known for crafting the magical morphing potions that can turn your Neopet into a different species and colour.

Kalora

This female red Kau is one of the opponents you play against in the card game Cheat! Kalora is on what she herself refers to as a "permanent holiday," just casually looking for the right job opportunity. Her hobbies include collecting false fingernails and making macaroni sculptures.

L

Leera Heggle

This male camouflage Kau plays for the Lost Desert Yooyuball team.

Lost Desert

A Neopian legend speaks of how the Lost Desert used to be lush and green in ancient, prehistoric times – until a massive herd of cows grazed there and ate all the vegetation, leaving a barren wasteland of sand. The legend goes on to claim that they then moved on to Meridell.

M

Martha

This massive Magma Kau is a member of the Brute squad. Her weapon of choice is a fearsome hammer.

Milk

When a Kau drinks milk, it will automatically become bloated.

Milk Maid and Milk Man

These cute outfits are perfect for Kaus! Give your girl Kau a farm-inspired customisation, or perhaps a Meridell background and she`ll fit right in. Perhaps a Neopia Central themed look for your boy Kau, so he can go on his early morning route and deliver his milk bottles?

N

Nonchalant

Kaus are pretty easy-going, happy-go-lucky Neopets. They tend to not worry or stress about things and are generally unconcerned. This doesn`t mean they won`t fight back if provoked, however.

O

Orange Chocolate Kau

Milk chocolate, mixed with a tinge of orange to create a mighty tongue-twister! This is a wonderful treat for those with a sweet tooth, and it makes a cute gift for a Kau-loving Neofriend.

Original

The Chocolate Kau was the first to feature the combination of chocolate shavings, white chocolate swirls/decorations and chocolate sauce. The Chocolate Ixi came along later with a similar design.

P

Popularity

If Neopets were a popularity contest, the Kau would certainly not win. At number 22 on the list of most popular Neopets based on pets created, they would not even get an honourable mention. Which is a shame, because they`re so cute!

Primrose

This is a character from the Darkest Faerie video game. She`s a yellow Kau who runs a food shop.

Q

Quadruped

Kaus are quadrupeds, meaning they walk on four legs, like a Moehog or Tonu.

R

Raising Young Kau

Want to have the fastest, strongest, smartest Kau in all Neopia? This book offers tips on and guiding to training and reading, written especially to suit Kaus, of course.

Running

They might not look it, but Kaus are quite fast runners, and have a decent endurance. They`re not made for sprint, but can run for quite some time in flat terrain.

S

Size

Kaus are medium-sized Neopets, and are about the same size as Lenny, Lupe, Chia and Gelert.

Spring

The Spring shop at the NC Mall is run by a cheerful, pink female Kau who loves flowers.

Spring is also the Kaus favourite season, as that is when the fields and meadows of Neopia sprout new, fresh grass.

Stripes

Most Kaus have stripes on their legs, back and face. When painted certain colours, the stripes on their face and/or body may change. On Maraquan Kaus (this goes for both UC and converted) their stripes are wavy – guess what they`re meant to symbolize? On Faerie Kaus, their stripes have a more rounded shape, and although you can`t see it as well on the converted Faerie Kau, the UC one has purple stripes on their brow arranged in such a way to resemble a flower or butterfly.

T

Tail

A Kaus tail is rather short, with a hairy tuft at the end. They use their tail to swat away annoying insects.

Trina

A story in the Neopets Magazine features a blue Kau named Trina who wanted to go on holiday to Mystery Island, but was reluctant to as her unability to swim made her scared of the water. She was however given a Maraquan Paint Brush by her friend, so after giving herself a new paint job, Trina was happily able to go on holiday to the tropical island.

U

UC/Unconverted

The UC Kaus include Royals, Darigan, Maraquan, Grey, Plushie and Faerie. You can not obtain an Unconverted Neopet through painting or morphing.

Unique

Most Mutant Neopets look quite different from each other, yet there are certain things some of them have in common. The Mutant Kau however, can safely be said is the most.. ehm, unique of them all. In the best way.

V

Vegetarian

Kaus do not eat meat, their diet consists only of things like grass, fruits and vegetables.

Voughn

A male Kau that was one of the team selected to protect the Clockwork Negg. (Featured in Festival of Neggs).

W

Warrior

When Maraqua was under attack by Pirates during the Curse of Maraqua plot, Neopets players could choose sides (Maraquans or Pirates) and fight against the enemy in the Battledome. Some female, elite Maraquan warriors are awarded the title of Shieldmaiden, and it`s a Kau representative of these that is featured on the avatar that was awarded to those fighting on Maraqua`s side upon the conclusion of the plot.

As this avatar was awarded as a prize for participating in a plot, it is retired and you are sadly unable to obtain it. Those who supported the Pirates in the plot were awarded a different avatar.

X

X-ray vision

Normal Kaus don`t have x-ray vision, but perhaps the Robot Kau does? They do have large, ice blue eyes that are probably capable of shooting laser beams, so I wouldn`t be surprised if they did.

Xpression

The ghost Kau looks angry, the grey kau looks sad. Other than that, all Kaus have the same, peaceful, happy expression. Oddly enough, before the conversion, the ghost kau had the standard, happy look on its face, but after the redraws they became quite annoyed.

Y

Yellow

Yellow Kau Plushie

This is a cute plushie for your collection or Kau-themed gallery. When you pull its back leg, it goes MOOO!

Yellow Kau Morphing Potion

One sip of this mustard flavour mixture and your Neopet will be a beautiful Yellow Kau.

Z

Zombie

If you want your Kau to join the army of the walking dead, you can paint them Zombie! Just make sure to stock up on brains before taking that trip to the Rainbow Pool, Zombie Neopets don`t care much for omelettes...

This wraps up this edition of Neopets A to Z, check out the previous entries in this series about Cybunnies and Eyries, if you like! Feel free to drop me a Neomail with suggestions or comments.

Happy Kau Day!
