Y12 Yooyus: Viewpoint of a Gelert Cage-Cleaner

by pandasrule1211

--------

Sometime, I wish I could be a Yooyu. They are free creatures, always looking forward to their next Yooyuball game, always being excited for their next practice run. But there is a dark edge to the team this year, and I can simply point out their faults so very easily. It seems just to be me and my perceptiveness. The Yooyuball players heed no mind to them, glibly playing as always.

My name is Simon. I’m just a simple blue Gelert who’s in charge of cleaning off their cages every so often. Nobody seems to notice me, let alone the Yooyus. Those petpets have better bonds with their trainers, while I fade into the background. I don’t mind. I have friends waiting for me when I get back, and they tell me funny jokes until my back is sore from leaning over in laughter.

But I’m never the one making the jokes. I’m more of an observer. I look at things, study them until my vision blurs, and then I analyze what I’ve seen. Which is why watching these Yooyus is so fascinating. They have such different personalities, all seven of them. I have a connection with Petpets. Most Neopets can’t really understand these small beasts besides their hunger and thirst, but I am different. I seem to sense what they’re feeling all the time; I can feel what they’re going through if I concentrate hard enough. So while I dust off the gears and cages, I revel in their feelings.

Fire Yooyu is most definitely the most memorable for most people. He is eager and boisterous, placing himself above everyone else while he goes fast fast fast in the field. That Yooyu thrives on attention, and while he gets it he glows and gloats and when he doesn’t he mopes until he makes a big mistake. Whenever that happens, he goes into one of his rages, going uber fast in the field until someone shoots a goal with him. Then he is easy going and happy once more. But under all that confidence I know that there is something else. A fear of dislike. He is just that selfish. He loves himself so much that he hates when others disapprove of him. So he brushes away criticism like it is a fly. And that is his greatest weakness.

Then there is Ice, his total opposite. She is calm, poised, relaxed. Nothing seems to surprise her. Ice takes on life like it is a steady, lazy river, and whenever something bad happens, she fights through until it disappears into thin air. Fire amuses her, with his dramatic moves and shallow personality. I think that she doesn’t get why he’s so selfish, because that is something that she’s never been. But she is hard to like, for she doesn’t seem to care most of the time. And in a companion, these Yooyus seek people they can confide in and get advice in return, along with a compassionate smile. Ice gives the advice, but in a placid, I-don’t-care tone.

Normal is sweet and innocent, and just like Ice, she doesn’t get Fire. Among all the others, her spirit is the purest. Her intentions are for the team, not for her own ambitions. But when will that brown creature start to understand that the world is cruel? Everything to her is a game. No, Normal. There isn’t an answer to everything. Solutions aren’t always there. She gets along well with Faerie, and likes her spunk. But she hides her dislike for Ice, having been snubbed before by lack of emotion. And like everyone else, she’s totally in awe of Fire. She is the typical Yooyu, liking who most people like and hating the typical ones.

Clockwork Yooyu gets along very well with Ice. While his time is short, and he must be rebuilt every time, he does it all with a light smile. And with half of a grimace. His patience is everlasting, too. Something about him attracts others, whether it is his cute little jokes or the dance moves he can pull off. Charisma bounces off him in beams. Yet he is a genius for brains, and for that he is always assuming that he is the best. Arrogance. That is one of the few things that Ice fails to notice. She only understands the good of him.

Purple wings veined with royal blue, charming smile, cheeky comments, is Faerie. Her intentions are only good, but she fails to distinguish the line between good and bad. Her intelligence is the weakest of the group, and she tries to recover that with her layer of superficiality. Every smile is so that everybody only sees what she wants them to see. She plays around with their minds... unintentionally, of course. Under that bit of cunning and trickery, all she wants is to be loved. In that, she is the weak link. Faerie tries to be special by doing loop-de-loops in the field and fancy curves. Neopets take advantage of that, and her personality itself. If they compliment her, she gets distracted. Swings become loopier and more likely to turn into winning throws.

Mutant is, though very subtly, the most malicious of the group. When he imitates the other’s movements instead of creating his own, he is mocking them instead of praising. He does it to ridicule their styles and point out the less-than-smart points of their technique. Sometimes, that can really hurt. They all dislike him, but assume Darigan is worse. Lies, actually.

That mass of dark purple Yooyu, Darigan, isn’t as diabolic as everybody thinks. There is merely a strong hard edge to his personality. He doesn’t do the opposite of what people want him to do on the field to make them insecure. Instead, he is just testing them. That only-slightly sinister Yooyu just wants to see who will actually attempt strategies to overcome the problem he creates instead of giving up. Of course he isn’t the sweetest, gentlest Yooyuball around, but under that layer of ice there is a bright, pulsing heart.

But I can’t do anything to help all of these sport-loving creatures. They don’t speak my language. For the sake of Altador, I cannot even get close to them. I may be a Gelert cleaning their cages, but they don’t notice me. And I cannot even give them advice for their troubles.

‘Tis is a hard world.
