Choosing a Colour

by neom_777

--------

Every so often while surfing the Help Chat you will come across the question, “What should I paint my pet?” Many Neopians are unaware of the requirements of painted pets or how it may affect their very life in Neopia. For this reason, I have separated most of the painted colours into groups and have covered some of the topics one must think about before painting one's pet. (Note: Not all the paint brush colours are listed due to the amount of information available.)

HIGH MAINTENANCE COLOURS

-Baby (595,000 NP)

-Plushie (5,000,000 NP)

-Royal (1,750,000 NP)

If your neopet is young at heart and loves cuddles, a plushie or baby paint brush is the way to go. If your pet is a bit more, well, snobbish, painting them royal will enable them to gain the respect they believe they deserve.

In case you haven’t realised yet, you need a lot of neopoints to keep a high maintenance pet healthy and happy. Babies require constant attention. Royals are likely to run you ragged with demands unless you give them sufficient etiquette lessons before painting. Plushies will often tear. You can reduce the cost of maintenance if you learn to sew or have a neofriend who is handy with a needle. Another issue with high maintenance pets is feeding. Royal pets will turn up their nose at all but gourmet foods, while babies and plushies need baby food and woollen cuisine respectively.

Rough siblings are a hazard to high maintenance colours, especially tearable plushies. On the flip side, motherly neopets will adore nurturing their baby brother or sister. If there are issues with hierarchy in your family, try to avoid painting a pet royal. This could upset the balance or cause further conflict. If your heart’s desire is a royal pet, however, make sure the other dominant pet (or pets) is not Darigan or another royal unless you want to start a war!

Royals will feel most at home in Meridell, Brightvale, Shenkuu or Altador. On no account should a high maintenance pet live in Darigan Citadel or Maraqua.

EDIBLE COLOURS

-Strawberry (400,000 NP)

-Biscuit (70,000 NP)

Before painting your pet an edible colour, it is advisable to check whether or not they have any allergies. The last thing you want is for your pet to be allergic to itself! These pets should also have families that are not prone to nibble them. Sorry, no Skeith and Grarrl siblings for edible pets.

Strawberry pets are one of the few species of Neopians devoted to cannibalism. Of course, upon eating their brethren they often perform a strange ritual of respect. Definitely one for the screenie pages. Biscuit Pets eat dough, chocolate chips and flour. Basically anything you would use to make cookies.

It would be best to live in a secluded part of Neopia, to avoid unnecessary confrontations with hungry neopets. Living next door to the omelette may be your best bet. They will be more likely to target the large egg than your precious pet.

CREEPY COLOURS

-Darigan (1,400,000 NP)

-Ghost (100,000 NP)

-Zombie (4,500,000 NP)

Show your evil mastermind how much you care by painting them Darigan or ghost. Zombies drool a lot, so if this is your dream colour, make sure that your pet isn’t too concerned about hygiene or looks.

Neopets that are easily frightened will not appreciate having a ghost for a sibling. Also, if you plan to have a zombie pet, make sure the rest of your family is trained in zombie defence procedures.

A secluded neohome is best for these pets. Preferred locations are at Darigan Citadel or the Haunted Woods. Zombie-proofing your house is a must to prevent your precious pet wandering off at night and devouring the neighbours. They will also need regular baths, and it is best to carry a towel with you at all times. Don’t forget to feed them their daily brains! If you have a ghost, they will appreciate a specially-made bed that they will not accidentally fall through at night.

COLOURS OF FLIGHT

-Cloud (77,000 NP)

-Faerie (3,600,000 NP)

-Starry (105,000 NP)

If your pet feels at home among the clouds, choose a colour from this group. If your pet hasn’t got wings, it is advised to paint them faerie. If they have the necessary appendages, choosing a colour is a lot easier. What’s more, these colours can fit in with any family. The only issue may be if a sibling is afraid of flight; however, this can be worked around.

Flying pets should not live in areas like Terror Mountain, the Virtupets Station or Maraqua. Faerieland is a favourite, but they are happy virtually anywhere. When your pet goes out flying, make sure it wears reflective clothing and a parachute in case of emergencies.

ELEMENTAL COLOURS

-Fire (900,000 NP)

-Maraquan (7,000,000 NP)

-Snow (120,000 NP)

If your pet loves to swim, Maraquan is the way to paint. Snow is for those pets who love to sit silently in the cool morning and contemplate the meaning of Neopia. For those who are easily chilled, fire will prevent them from catching a cold.

Fire pets and snow pets do not mix. Neither does fire and Maraquan. Non-flammable neopets are the best siblings for a fire pet. Snow and Maraquan pets can live with any other painted pet, as long as they aren’t hugged by say, a plushie.

Snow pets belong on Terror Mountain, where they won’t run the risk of melting. Maraquans feel at home anywhere with water. If you want to be different, Kiko Lake may be worth a look. Neopets painted fire feel at home in Tyrannia or on one of the tropical islands.

If you have a Maraquan or snow pet, carry a water bottle or a block of ice with you when you go on holiday. Fire pets must be clothed in nonflammable material (you should be too) and it is vital that you carry a fire extinguisher with you at all times.

WORLD WIDE COLOURS

-Desert (2,000,000 NP)

-Island (4,200,000 NP)

-Pirate (8,000,000 NP)

-Tyrannian (160,000 NP)

Basically, if your pet is a fan of a certain world, painting them native is a must. For the explorer, pirate is a prime choice. However, if more than one pet is to be painted a world colour, they should both be painted the same. Otherwise, rivalries can spike up during the Altador Cup.

Pirates prefer to live on an island, close to the sea. The other world colours are advised to live in their corresponding domain, to avoid hostility from natives of other lands. Pirates will also require a boat in which to sail the seven seas, unless you want a mutiny on your hands. If you have a Tyrannian, on the other hand, daily grooming to prevent nasty knots in their fur is a must.

SEASONAL COLOURS

-Christmas (26,000 NP)

-Halloween (900,000 NP)

Does your neopet dream about a particular holiday throughout the year? Why not paint them Halloween or Christmas, so they can celebrate all the time. Christmas neopets should live on Terror Mountain, while Halloween pets belong in the Haunted Woods.

Siblings need to be supportive of a seasonally painted pet, as they may be mocked by strangers. Christmas pets can fit into any caring family. A Halloween neopet will make a great companion for one of the creepy colours or a fellow trick-or-treater.

Earplugs and nerves of steel are valuable assets for the owner of a seasonal pet to avoid being driven mad by carol singing or the continuous cries of ‘trick or treat!’ whenever you open the door.

I hope this article has assisted people in choosing what colour to paint their neopet. I would like to note that in the end the final colour that your pet becomes is up to you. I would also like to thank ancientsecrets for proof-reading my article. Happy painting!
