The Adventures of Trina: The Return of the Staff - Part Five

“You want Faerieland? Fine, then I’ll take Meridell!” hollered Heermeedjet.

“If you can have Meridell, then I’ll take Brightvale?” Merouladen shouted back at his brother.

“BRIGHTVALE...? You want Brightvale? That’s where all the mega smart ones are! I bet you can’t even spell Brightvale!” Heermeedjet broke into laughter.

Merouladen began to argue. “Of course I can!”

     “No, you can’t!”

     “Yes, I can!”

     “NO!”

     “YES!”

“Then, if you’re so smart, what letter does it start with?” Heermeedjet asked his brother wisely.

“Letter...? So now we’re talking about neomail! It’s okay to be jealous of me! So don’t try to change the subject!” Merouladen spat.

     “I AM NOT JEALOUS!”

     “Yes, you are.”

     “NO, I’M NOT!”

Ignoring his henchmen's quarrel for the ninth time in the same night, Malkus poured slime on the broken part of the staff. Then he attached the other half with the Cobrall to it. He wrapped the two pieces together with the thick bandages.

“It’s a shame the desert is deserted; it would be fun to test out my new toy.” He frowned.

“Master, the desert is not deserted!” Heermeedjet exclaimed, ending the argument.

Merouladen looked at his brother with an abhorrent face. “Yes, it is!”

“No, it isn’t!” roared Heermeedjet, who was ready to begin another dispute.

“What do you mean?” Malkus frowned and looked, irate, at the two Meercas, which caused them to silence.

“There’s this puny Wocky and her three pathetic friends, but they won’t be a problem.” Merouladen pointed at the staff Malkus was holding. “As long as we have this thing, no one will.” They all grinned in unison and began to prepare to take over Neopia.

“I never thought hiking in the desert at 3:15 A.M. was so exhausting!” Cassie said while panting slowly.

“It’s much better now than hiking in the daytime.” Pat began to slow down.

“Trina, we’ve been walking for almost an hour, can we take a short rest?” Linny asked, almost collapsing into the sand.

“Sure, but keep in mind sunrise is coming closer by every passing second. Let’s have some water from my backpack.” Trina opened her backpack and handed out some water bottles. They weren’t cold, but the tired friends didn’t seem to care.

They all sat down in a small circle, gulping down their water until there wasn’t a drop left. Then they stood up and continued their long journey to Sutek’s Pyramid. They hiked on for about 40 more minutes until they finally were right in front of the outstanding golden pyramid.

“Now where do we hide?” Cassie asked, worried. “We can’t just bury ourselves in the sand; we might get stepped on or stuck.”

Trina began to wander around the front of the pyramid. She noticed a small grey pebble like the one she saw earlier by the grand city. She quickly started to dig. She went deeper and deeper until her paws hit something hard. She brushed off the surface to reveal a trap door. “I’ve found a trap door! Let’s hide in there!” she exclaimed.

They all quickly ran into the small dark passageway and closed the door. Linny had another flashlight in her backpack so she pulled it out. She turned it on and pointed it around. It was a very small passage but they didn’t care. They waited 30 minutes in the hideout until they heard some faint footsteps coming their way.

     “Who’s there?” Linny asked, terrified.

There was no response. The four friends could hear the footsteps getting closer by the second. A thought floated in each of their minds that they should leave the hideout, but they all wanted to wait to see who was coming. Linny shone the flashlight at the large figure that was still far away. The light revealed a large shadow on the wall behind them. It was Skeith-like, with a hat and an overcoat. Trina knew this villain as Malkus Vile. He was carrying various types of mirror shields.

“We won’t let you do this!” Trina yelled frantically. “We’ve figured out your plan!”

Malkus began to giggle. “You think you fools could stop me? That’s extremely pitiable. In just about one hour the entire world of Neopia will be mine, and no one will stand in my way! I’m just going to have to teach you four a lesson first!”

The two Meercas jumped from behind Malkus Vile and began running toward Trina and her terrified friends. Right in Heermeedjet’s tiny paws was the powerful priceless Staff of Alhasutek. Without a word, Trina pushed up the trap door to escape. Not surprisingly, the door was locked. Cassie and Linny started pounding up on it. Pat thought about screaming, but it was going to do any good at 5 A.M. in the Lost Desert.

A bright stream of green light shot from the staff and hit the wall next to Linny. Suddenly, another stream of light soared across the room, heading straight for Cassie. She ducked her head instantly and the shot hit the wall behind her. Finally the trap door flew open. They all dashed out in seconds. Heermeedjet tripped over his tail and tossed the staff to his brother. He fired a fast beam, and it ended up hitting Pat’s tail.

“I got hit! Help me!” Pat shrieked. Trina, Cassie, and Linny quickly ran to help, but it was too late.

The three friends turned to Pat as fast as they could. She quickly started shrinking. In less than three seconds, the purple Shoyru was now just an inch tall. Cassie grabbed Pat and dived to her left, avoiding another stream of light.

Cassie held Pat gently by her ear to hear her speak softly, “Please leave me now; you all must stop Malkus Vile before it's too late, then I’ll be back to normal.”

While Linny was trying to hear what Pat was saying, a beam of light hit Linny’s foot and she was ensnared by a large cloud of smoke. When the smoke started to clear away, a small figure stepped out. Linny had turned into a Drackonack. She started running around in circles while screaming.

Trina started running as fast as she could toward the giant pyramid in front of her. She turned around to see if Cassie was right behind her. She saw her standing in front of Malkus Vile and the two Meercas, trying to dodge the staff’s petite mighty blows.

Trina ran back to Cassie. “What are you doing?”

“I’m distracting them. Hurry, Trina! It’s your dream to be an archeologist, and you are the greatest one I’ve ever known. I know how frightened you are right now, and you must do this alone. I need you, Linny and Pat need you, and the world needs you! You’re our only hope, Trina, and you must save the world! Go now and get a head start! Go! I know you can do it!” The Usul dodged many shots while she was talking to Trina, but suddenly a fast beam hurtled on Cassie’s right arm and she began to shrink into a black Snicklebeast.

Trina was about to jump in front to save Cassie, but she had to do what needed to be done, no matter how much she didn’t want to.

“Now this is personal!” Trina shouted as she began running to Sutek’s Pyramid.

Malkus and his Meercas were close behind. The Skeith ran to the other side of the pyramid with the Meercas holding all of the supplies. They started to climb up it. Trina looked up at the sky. It seemed that the sun was about to rise. The Wocky started quickly climbing up the pyramid, hoping that she could reach the top first.

Malkus Vile was rapidly making his way up the tall pyramid, with the Meerca brothers close behind. Trina was right in their tracks, but she seemed to be having trouble. She was so tired; she could fall asleep where she was climbing.

Soon she was about 50 feet off the desert ground. While strongly determined not to look down, she stopped for a quick break. The desert temperature was beginning to rise. About a minute later, Trina started up again. She could hear the voices of the two Meercas very nearby. Soon she was almost to the top. She could see Malkus Vile making his way up on the other side. Trina began to climb faster than she had ever climbed before. Suddenly, her foot didn’t reach the warm bricks and she started to slip. She quickly grabbed the wall of the pyramid and held on tight. She was now hanging 70 feet in the dusty desert air.

She looked around. Every second felt like minutes had gone by. There was nothing there that would support her if she fell, or that would help her up. She felt a quick rush of an indescribable feeling go to her head. She closed her eyes, with only one thought in mind. Whether she’d win or lose was a matter of precise, wise choices that she would have to make in the next few moments. It was now or never.
