The Hidden Tunnels
As he reentered the cave, Kevin noticed that the Snowager
was fast asleep again. His glass body rumbled and vibrated as he snored
softly.
He flew to the hole where Spell and her friends were
hidden. “What happened?” Spell asked.
Kevin quickly related all that had happened. When he
had finished, Spell said, “Do you know, Kev, we’ve find a tunnel in this
hole.”
“Where does it lead to?” Kevin asked excitedly.
Spell shrugged. “We were waiting for you to get back
so we could explore the tunnel. Perhaps Yorick could have entered the
tunnel and got lost and couldn’t find his way back again.”
“Then c’mon, let’s hurry up and get in!” Kevin cried.
The four NeoPets crouched down very low and entered the
very-dark tunnel. It was so low that it brushed against the top of Spell’s
head, even when she was crouching down. Somewhere in the distance they
could hear the Snowager roar, making the whole area vibrate. Kevin winced
and Crystalle let out a small scream.
After some time of crawling, the tunnel gradually grew
higher and finally the four NeoPets could stand upright. It grew less
dark too. Before they knew it, they were standing in a clearing.
In front of them were two tunnels.
“Oh, look. Just what we need. A forkpath,” Spell said
sarcastically.
“Yeah, which way are we gonna take now?” G2 asked.
“Why don’t we split up,” Kevin suggested.
“Don’t be stupid. Who’s gonna save you if you’re in danger?
Besides, we might never be able to find our way back. If we’re gonna spend
eternity here, I think more the merrier, right?” Spell said.
“Spell!” Crystalle said, looking shocked. “Touch wood!
Touch wood! What if we really are doomed to spend eternity here? Then
you’d be responsible!”
“You’re so superstitious,” G2 said.
“Oh, c’mon, can we please go on?” Spell said. “We’re
running out of time, you know. I don’t like to think about what my owner
would say if I wasn’t home for three days and three nights.”
“There you go again!” cried Crystalle.
Spell just ignored her and marched on toward the left
tunnel.
The others trailed after her. The tunnel gradually grew
darker and darker, and narrower and narrower, and lower and lower as well.
The tunnel sloped upwards and downwards and sometimes curved this way
and that so sharply that Spell, who was at the head of the line, nearly
bumped her head because it was so dark that she couldn’t see anything.
And then suddenly…
“Ow!” Spell cried.
“You bumped your head again?” Crystalle said.
“Yeah,” Spell said. “Now where’s the other path?” She
headed to the right, but there was only frozen rock there. She headed
to the left, and it was the same. “What?! A dead end?” she cried.
“Are you sure?” G2 gasped. “But… but…there’s no other
path around us.”
“Well, we’ll have to turn back then,” said Spell sensibly.
But suddenly there was a deafening, rumbling noise, and
suddenly, the ceiling caved in behind Kevin, who had entered last.
“What? Oh, no!” cried Spell.
There wasn’t enough space for the four NeoPets to move
about, and Kevin was to tiny to move away the boulders. “We’re trapped!”
Crystalle shrieked. “This is all your fault! I told you not to say such
inauspicious things!”
“Oh, be quiet, Crystalle,” Spell snapped. “This isn’t
the time for us to think about stupid things like that! We are NOT going
to spend eternity here. We are NOT.”
“Wait!” Kevin cried. He was panting. “Look, there’s a
rock pointing up out of the ground.” He pointed to the ground, where a
small rock, barely noticeable, jutted out of the ground. “I’m going to
wrench it out.” He grabbed it with both hands and pulled out the rock.
But just as he did so, the ground below Kevin started
to shake madly. “What is this?!” Kevin cried. But before he could do anything
else, the ground caved in. Where there should be Kevin, there was now
a large big hole in the ground.
Crystalle screamed.
